What is the correct pronunciation of "Cheney?"
On "Hardball" yesterday, Chris Matthews said, "It is really pronounced Chee'-ney." I think he said that twice as he segued into introducing the panel, which included the author of that new book on Cheney.

Is it Chainey as in chains (heh, heh, heh), or Chee'-ney as in meanie?

On another note, why is Chris Matthews called Tweety?

Although his last name is very often pronounced <'tʃeɪni> (chAYnee), the Vice President himself and his family pronounce it as <'tʃi:ni> (chEEnee)*

23. Chris Mathews is right
I heard this on NPR a while back. When Cheney was a Congressman it was pronounced Chee'ney. The media started pronouncing it wrong in 2000 & Cheney said it didn't matter. More info here:

Dick Cheney has been in the news for years now, and reporters still aren't certain how to get the name right.

Is it "Cheeney" or "Chainey" or Mr. Vice President?

"Cheney is fine," the Republican vice presidential nominee said Tuesday, referring to the "Chain-ey" pronunciation.

"It's close enough," he said. "If you guys get that right, I'll be happy."

A reporter had asked Cheney how to pronounce his last name.

"How do I pronounce my last name and how do I want you to pronounce it? Well, the family's always said Cheney with an 'e' and that was especially true out West growing up," he said. "I find, when I came East, that the tendency was to say Cheney with an "a". I'll respond to either. It really doesn't matter."

Which is a good reason to continue pronouncing it that way.

name correctly. The first time he did it, he explained in detail that that was how Cheney himself pronounced it and wanted it pronounced. He wasted about thirty seconds congratulating himself on pleasing the VP with his excellent pronounciation while his guests just looked confused. The really amusing thing is that since then he tries so hard to pronounce it chee-nee every time, but he can't do it. He forgets half the time. But when he does remember, he is just so prooud .:puke:
