What is the correct pronunciation of "Cheney?"

On "Hardball" yesterday, Chris Matthews said, "It is really pronounced Chee'-ney." I think he said that twice as he segued into introducing the panel, which included the author of that new book on Cheney.

Is it Chainey as in chains (heh, heh, heh), or Chee'-ney as in meanie?

I heard this on NPR a while back. When Cheney was a Congressman it was pronounced Chee'ney. The media started pronouncing it wrong in 2000 & Cheney said it didn't matter. More info here:

name correctly. The first time he did it, he explained in detail that that was how Cheney himself pronounced it and wanted it pronounced. He wasted about thirty seconds congratulating himself on pleasing the VP with his excellent pronounciation while his guests just looked confused.
