Bishop believes Australian tourist to Indonesia be innocent of drug smuggling
Bishop believes Corby may be innocent

Bathurst Bishop Patrick Dougherty has expressed concern over the continued imprisonment of convicted drug trafficker Schapelle Corby whom he believes may be "entirely innocent and very unjustly suffering".

The Catholic Weekly reports that an Australian bishop has renewed doubts about the guilt of Corby who is serving a 20 year jail sentence in Indonesia.

<snip>

He said that on the one hand there was the unconvincing course of her case through Indonesia's justice system and the not always competent quality of her defence team's work.

<snip>

"She went to Indonesia on a holiday visit to her sister and the marijuana was found at the top of her boogie-board bag, which was unlocked - a most unlikely place for a planned drug import. And Schapelle was clearly not part of a drug syndicate. "One immediately tends to accept her explanation that it was not she who attached drugs to her baggage."

1. He needs to review that; IIRC, the evidence was pretty overwhelming. nt

2. Is there some evidence you're aware of that wasn't in the link?
It sounds underwhelming to me. They didn't even check for fingerprints? Her suitcase was unlocked? The stuff was on top of her things?

3. I remember this case (vaguely now) from when it happened;
my DH and I followed it as we were frequent visitors to Bali. The 'stuff' was inside her bag, not outside, for starters. Here's a rundown, but I recall that the majority of Aussies on the board I frequented thought she was guilty, though the penalty was way too severe, given that some Bali bombers were released from jail.

Maybe an Aussie will pipe in and give their opinion.

... because she's pretty.

And haven't you noticed that she's wearing a cross?

I mean, come ON!

Innocent!

5. Yeah, she couldn't possibly have anything to do with weed!
I also vaguely remember that her younger brother, who was going to Bali with her to visit their sister who lived there, was spirited away as soon as it happened, and I don't think he was called to stand trial. She could conceivably be covering up for him. :shrug:
