Citizens protest war

By JEFF BARRON
PDT Staff Writer
Friday, July 27, 2007 12:29 AM EDT

About 15 anti-war protesters gathered in front of U.S. Rep. Jean Schmidt's office in Portsmouth on Thursday urging the Republican from Loveland to support the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq.

Schmidt has supported the war since its start.

“Protesting has always helped before,” protester Connie Altman said. “But it doesn't look like anyone is listening now. But people must rise up.”

"The demonstration occurred around the lunch hour when Chillicothe Street had a lot of traffic on it. Many motorists blew their horns or waved to the protesters in support of their cause...." MORE

NOTE: Scioto County, the Appalachian county easternmost in Jean Schmidt's district, has twice voted for her opponent by a 2/3 majority. The four Appalachian counties in the district have carried for the democratic candidate, whilst Cincinnati and its suburban counties vote Republican -- that's how Schmidt manages to get elected. Schmidt detests her Appalachian constituents and her latest brainchild was to put a nuclear waste dump there. Newly-elected Democratic Governor Ted Strickland was born and raised in Scioto County.

1. Another excerpt from the article...
"As the protest was winding down around 1 p.m., Kevin Johnson, of The Emporium at Portsmouth thanked the protesters for what they were doing.

"In a related issue, “Eyes Wide Open: The Human Cost of the Iraq War” will be at Tracy Park on Aug. 4 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Aug. 5 from noon to 5 p.m.

"The exhibit has toured the country since 2004."
