Associated Press - July 27, 2007 3:45 PM ET

DALLAS (AP) - A malnourished dog found chained to some railroad tracks in the Dallas area -- has been rescued.

Now the animal welfare group Operation Kindness is offering a $2,500 reward for the arrest and conviction of the person who chained the dog to the railway.

A conductor on Tuesday noticed the dog on some adjacent tracks.

Union Pacific managed to stop two trains while an employee freed the underweight black Lab-chow mix.

4. Do you have any idea how they found him before a train came?
I'm thinking that the if they catch up to the ones responsible for this they'll have a charges coming not just from the animal cruelty, but also for obstructing the railroad track. As far as I'm concerned the more charges the better.

6. No
The story I read just said that a conductor saw him. I thought they meant a passing train, but I'm not sure exactly.

8. Credit to Union Pacific for their actions to save this poor dog.
I hope the people who took action to report the incident and stop the trains are recognized somehow.

Good job!!

9. Was he chained to the actual rails?
Like Little Nell and Snidely Whiplash?

Or was he just on a long chain attached some structure of the tracks, and could have easily avoided any train that came along?

Sledgehammer Used To Free Dog Chained To Railroad Tracks

POSTED: 2:51 pm CDT July 24, 2007
UPDATED: 7:35 am CDT July 25, 2007
DALLAS -- Workers had to stop two trains and use a sledgehammer to free a dog found chained to railroad tracks on Tuesday in west Dallas.

A train traveling westbound spotted the black lab tied to the tracks and called dispatch.

The collar was imbedded in the dog's neck.

"We held up trains until we could get there, found that large dog was chained up to the tracks, had to get a sledgehammer and free it," Union Pacific's Robert Koci said.
