Lowe's Pulls Ads From O'Reilly Factor
Reported by Deborah - Fri 5:27 PM

We just got some wonderful news! One of our readers recieved a letter from Lowe's saying their ads will no longer appear during The O'Reilly Factor. We have not gotten any details yet but we'll keep you posted. Here's the letter below.

Dear Lowe's Customer,

Thank you for your comments regarding the program, The O'Reilly Factor.

Lowe's has strict guidelines that govern the placement of our advertising. Our company advertises primarily in national, network prime-time television programs and on a variety of cable outlets.

Lowe's constantly reviews advertising buys to make certain they are consistent with its policy guidelines. The O'Reilly Factor does not meet Lowe's advertising guidelines, and the company's advertising will no longer appear during the program.

We are dedicated to providing the best service, products, and shopping environment in the home improvement industry. All three of these are very important to our business, and our customers will always be our number one priority.

We appreciate your contacting us, and hope this information addresses your concerns.

124. Organized boycotts do indeed work
Edited on Sat Jul-28-07 06:19 PM by Bluzmann57
In the late '70's, organized Labor, as an almost united entity, took on a gigantic food processor due to unfair labor practices and some other stuff. We nearly brought this company to their corporate knees and they capitulated. They are now, from all reports, a pretty good company to work for, paying fair wages and treating emplopyees right. There was also a brewer of (so called) beer who Organized Labor targeted in the '80's, and that one worked as well, although they have since reverted back to the old ways, to some extent. So the moral of the story is that it is up to us to put pressure on these advertisers. We have to be serious and not spend money with them. Lowe's is a small, but signifigant victory. We must keep up the pressure. And we also have to show Lowe's we appreciate them by purchasing stuff from them. And this is coming from a guy who supports local businesses at all times, when possible.

4. This gets their attention, even at Fox.
Maybe, if enough advertisers bail, they will get rid of O'Reilly. I know they don't mind losing money to spread their propaganda, but even Fox has to look at the bottom line sometimes.

 Lowe's.

I like to shop in locally owned stores first, if possible. But we are looking at new carpeting, and a few other things, depending on the budget. If I can get some things at Lowe's, I will be sure to tell them why I am shopping there.

While it's great a major advertiser did this, it's like throwing a deck chair off the Titanic. O Lielly still draws considerably higher ratings than almost anything on cable news. I'm sure some asshat company will jump in to buy time.

83. That's right. It doesnt matter cause according to Billo, he's right because his ratings say so.
He has directly said or inferred many, many times that his opinion is correct because he gets good ratings. By that logic, the Simpsons is a documentary about a real life, middle America family.

128. What the hell is up with Bill-O's skin????
He's starting to look like a leper. And if it is leprosy Billy, here's the cure. Straight from a source I know you'd approve of, Leviticus 14:49-53

49And he shall take to cleanse the house two birds, and cedar wood, and scarlet, and hyssop:

50And he shall kill the one of the birds in an earthen vessel over running water:

51And he shall take the cedar wood, and the hyssop, and the scarlet, and the living bird, and dip them in the blood of the slain bird, and in the running water, and sprinkle the house seven times:

52And he shall cleanse the house with the blood of the bird, and with the running water, and with the living bird, and with the cedar wood, and with the hyssop, and with the scarlet:

53But he shall let go the living bird out of the city into the open fields, and make an atonement for the house: and it shall be clean.

and it didn't show Lowe's as being 100% red. It wasn't blue, but Home Depot was definitely more red than Lowe's. The rest of the sites that are on this list seem to be what I remember.

I have to disagree with what it says on this list. I remember it so vividly because I had to make a choice as to which one was better since they're both about the same distance for me.

16. Lowes has an interesting dynamic in their tactic to attract customers
I did a case study on them last year (I'm in Graduate school).

Brighter lighting, wider aisles, more visibility of customer service on the floor -- all designed to appeal to female shoppers.

I (female) always liked shopping at Lowes more than the HD. When I heard that, I pictured both stores, and agree -- it works, at least for me.

Now that I hear this, I am all Lowes, baby!

60. Agreed
I noticed the same several years ago. I shop locally first, but I just refuse now to go into a HD because they are hard to shop in. Both stores have lots of stuff, but at least Lowes has better lighting, the store is cleaner and there is sometimes a body around to ask for help or a question.

81. Home Depot is sometimes cheaper but they still suck
Even though HD is closer to my house i just find it faster to go to Lowes because more often than not they have what i need where as HD is either don't carry it or are out of stock.
HD recently also had to pay some big bucks out so they buy out their corrupt CEO's contract allowing them to curbside him, as a result they might have gotten marginally better since. Other times i also end up going to the local ACE because the big boys don't stock it. I also have seen stories where ACE will order it up and get it to you faster if they don't have it. The problem with ACE is they are often quite a bit higher price wise.

Politics wise they all have issues, but what ya going do, sell your house or stop living in it because it's broken

122. This woman also prefers Lowe's
because the people who work there don't treat me like an idiot.

I've been engaged in a more-than-minor-but-not-quite-major remodelling project for the past year, and I get very disgusted if I am treated like someone who just because I'm female doesn't know a hammer from a paint brush. The staff at my (new) local Lowe's have been helpful, polite, available, and respectful.

I've purchased virtually all my remodelling supplies at Lowe's or the two local hardware stores, with one exception, which was a small appliance Lowe's didn't even carry and which HD had on such a ridiculously low sale price that I hope they lost money on it!

134. My Lowe's story
When I installed an air conditioner a couple of weeks ago, I needed a piece of plexiglass cut to fit. Home Depot had the plexiglass, but they would not cut it for me. I went to Lowe's, and they were out of plexiglass except for a very large, expensive piece, but the manager told me to go get the HD plexiglass, and bring it to him, and he'd cut it for free.

I ended up mistakenly getting some stuff that was actually replacement glass (I know), but we decided to use it anyway. When the Lowe's guy started to cut it, it cracked. So he got the big plexiglass (the expensive one), cut it to fit and gave it to me free of charge. He was a customer service God! :)

That said, if a mom and pop hardware store in my area sold plexiglass, they would have gotten my business, regardless of cost.

56. That photo op was at a regular warehouse, not a HD
The Home Depot photo op...they did that one at a store in Maryland. The company flew Bob Nardelli and about a dozen hangers-on up there to sit behind Dipshit and look all happy.

And behind our hangers-on...well, let's just say the poor fuckers who had to build that display had the last laugh. I sat here and looked at the photo on DU, and counted off all the safety violations I could see in the racking behind them. It was something like two dozen major rules violations, and I couldn't tell from my vantage point whether the beams were bolted to the uprights (they just snap in; there's a series of holes on the sides of the uprights, and you are supposed to stick a Grade 5 bolt through the holes to keep the beam from getting dislodged) or the uprights bolted to the floor. Mebbe they figured that if they top-loaded the rack, it would collapse and take out both Bush AND Nardelli at the same time.

31. Call Lowe's to thank them!

on edit: I chose "5" from the menu and was connected with a real person, even though it is 6 pm on the West Coast and 9 on the East. I think this move by Lowe's will have more of an impact if they hear positive feedback.

Also: I told the rep. that I have a Home Depot and a Lowe's about equal distance from my house (true), and I will choose Lowe's every time.

I've found I get much better service there than at Home Depot, which, for some reason, is almost always just across the street. In this neck of the woods, anyway.

42. Lowe's looks more professional than Home Depot. This is just more reason
for me to shop Lowe's. No wonder why Lowes stock has been increasing in the last 6 years while Home Depot's has been going down. Also, giving HD's CEO a $200 million bonus for nothing doesn't help their cause.

99. But it WASN'T for nothing!
We paid Bob Nardelli $210 million (not $200 million--in my world, $10 million is still a hell of a lot of money) to go away and not provide us with any more of his leadership.

Bob imposed the following on our company:

* Home Depot used to pay a Longevity Bonus at 2 years, 5 years and every 5 years after that. People really WOULD stay at Home Depot for years and years--there are people who worked at the first Home Depot in Atlanta the day it opened (28 years ago) who still work there. The first thing Bob did was to eliminate that program.

* There are a lot of reasons you can't stock the shelves of a home improvement warehouse when it's open--most of that crap is so huge it's got to be pulled down with a forklift, which is hard to use when the store's open. Bob introduced the "Service Performance Improvement" (SPI--pronounced "spy") program, where a dedicated packdown crew would come in at night and stock shelves, and they'd work all over the store. Well...now you can't find a fucking thing in your overheads. Right now I have three skids of flooring and a skid of garden hoses sitting in my overhead. The flooring and garden-hose departments are at the other end of the store. Say someone came in to buy one of those hoses and there weren't any on the shelf. Would you, as an associate, walk 1100 feet to the other end of the building to find the hoses? No, you'd say you didn't have any and lose the sale. Happens all the time--because you don't expect garden hoses to be stored next to Portland cement, which is where they are. (And with that...last time I was in the garden center helping someone, I noticed that a skid of toolboxes was next to a skid of lawn mowers. I believe that on Monday night, I will put the hoses where the toolboxes are, put the toolboxes in Hardware in exchange for the skid of drywall tape they've got in the nail aisle, put the skid of concrete block that's in the roofing aisle where the hoses were and put the drywall tape where the block was. That way everyone will be happy.) I don't know if there's a company wide change, but since Bob went away my SPI team head decided to assign specific departments to his people--the guys who work electrical and flooring only work electrical and flooring. This makes them more familiar with the products there, and it's been better.

* We used to have these little Merit Badges. You did something super wonderful, you got a merit badge. If you did five super wonderful things, you could give the badges to HR and they'd put $100 in your next paycheck. Bob found out people who left HD would put the badges they'd accumulated (because the company wouldn't buy them back at $20 per badge) on eBay and other associates would buy them--there was absolutely no control whatsoever--then turn them in. The funny thing was, the going rate for badges was $25 and people were buying multiples of five--which rates right up there in the "moranity" department with paying $125 for a $100 Wal-Mart gift card, and that's happened. Bob decided to get rid of that program. But instead of doing what a lot of us thought would have been the right things (allowing associates to "pool" badges to get to five, allowing us to donate the badges we had to the Homer Fund (employee assistance program), paying $20 each for them), Bob decreed you could only cash them in if you had five. Well...at the time they stopped the program there were fifty associates in my store alone who had four. Once we dumped Bob's idiocy, someone came up with a new badge program--the Homer Badge. Each badge has a paper trail so you can't buy them on eBay, you only need three to get a bonus (it's $50, not $100--no one ever got rich off badges anyway)...it's really a better program. 'Course, now we have Arthur Blank, who's a Democrat, in charge instead of Bob Nardelli, who is not.

* All my air conditioning units are burned out. Bob required stores to use their profits to replace capital equipment, so we never got our units replaced because there's no such thing as enough profits in a single retail store to replace twenty 15-ton AC units. (Bob's idea, which is good on one level, is that stores won't tear their stuff up if they have to pay to replace it. Well...things wear out, too, and Bob didn't take that into account.) My district has a disadvantage no other district has: Frank Blake's son is store manager of a store in this district. (This is not nepotism, strangely enough--Frank was hired AFTER his son was, and there's enough separation in the chain of command between a store manager and the CEO that there's no possibility of influence. Besides, Frank's son is enough of an asshole on his own.) Frank visits his son, and he uses the opportunity to visit the other stores in this district--unannounced, which is why this is a disadvantage. Frank walked into my store. He asked how long it had been that hot in the store. He then got the company's HVAC contractor to inspect the units. When they were pronounced dead, Frank ordered us new ones. They'll be here next month.

Frank hired Bernie Marcus and Arthur Blank (the people who started the chain in the first place) as consultants. We're thinkin' that once Frank gets a Bob-free year under his belt so he can see where the problems REALLY lie, things should improve greatly.

Unfortunately, it won't fix the major problem my store has: a building our new manager describes as "square-foot challenged." There's just too much stuff in there!

127. I just stumbled onto the website luckily. Thanks!
Its a great feeling to know there are more than a few who see what is happening to our country, most people say I'm crazy, then if I give them some good information backing my beliefs they then go to the " oh well cant do anything about it" . So ridiculous! Its my new calling to try to spread the word and help people get knowledgeable on what our big brother is up to ( as long as I dont get taken out ). Its definitely an uphill battle though, I get the same responses as above 95% of the time. Its crazy that the only people that I meet that see through the bureaucracy are people from other countries.

Ive had a good understanding of the government even 19 years ago when i was 14yo, one of my brothers went into the Military and then started talking about the Gov. and what they were attempting but I didn't realize the magnitude of what was going on and the speed at which it was taking place, at least of recent years. I guess I'm too close to D.C., because most people wont even look for the knowledge about the situation, they just admit some kind of defeat? I fear they will realize it but just too late but thats why we are all here trying to make the country a better place for everyone not just the few!

The last time I shopped at Home Depot I was asked to use their new self check out. I said that I could not lift the product onto the scanner. The person shrugged and turned and walked away. I did not buy the product.

I went to my local store for the product and when going through the checkout they asked if I would like help getting it to my car. I said that I would like that. I have been shopping there ever since.

I tried to return a ratchet to Home Depot... A freaking $12.00 ratchet that had a "lifetime warranty". There was a replacment on the shelf.

They refused to honor the warranty & I told them I had over $3k woth of thier hand tools (true) & now the warranty was worthless??. I got pretty much the same deal from corporate. They would only honor the warranty if I mailed them the ratchet & provided a reciept-I get my hand tools at Sears now-no fuss or hassle.

For everyday stuff & some HTF fasteners LOWE's has been very good. I will now dedicate my purchases to them.

I also just wrote a "thank you" to corporate.

94. What is so great is that it targets one specific program - with the result
that it will make the news faster than if Lowe's pulled all programs. And it was accompanied by the letter posted on DU by brettdale - which Lowe's is obviously not trying to talk around. If they had pulled all advertising, it could be speculated that there was a tiff about pricing or a contract point. Now - on to the next program.

Wasn't Franken the first person to start fighting back against O'Reilly?

95. Home Depot Has Earned...
...every bit of hatred I have for them. They brought in that asshole, Nardelli, who openly championed bushco - raising hundreds of thousands for him here in Atlanta. And even when they ran his ass off - only after profits, and the stock price, tumbled - we became aware of the stupid agreement they had for him in the first place...$60 million severance package - gad! And, of course, one of the founders, Arthur Blank, who has given us - to the tune of $130 million - that 'coach/dog killer', Michael Vick...looking him in the eye and seeing a wonderful human being and representative of your franchise, and even pushing him around in a wheel-chair on the stadium floor like some kind of 'cuckold' husband who's being played and is too dumb to realize it.

No, I've thought for a long time that Home Depot wasn't worth spit...maybe it was the orange (UT, Clemson, Florida, Auburn)...or that jerk, Tony Stewart, that drives their car...or...well you get the picture. It's Lowe's for me, boys.

98. I always shop at Lowes over HD - Lowe's contributes to Democrats.
Home Depot's former president (the one who got axed for driving the company into the ground) and its founder are Bush Rangers - huge contributors to Bush's reelection (reappointment) campaigns.

Lowe's, in contrast, gives more to Democrats than Republicans. Lowe's is also based in North Carolina, which makes it the "local" option for me among chains. HD is in Republican-central - suburban Atlanta.

Lowe's is a better store and a better place to shop. It's further away from me than HD. I can walk to HD but I never shop there. I combine trips to Lowe's with drives over to that side of town.

I'm surprised that Lowe's ever advertised on O'Lielly.

108. der Führer of Cable News will be fold to STFU.
The freepers will boycott the other way. Will it matter what our politics .vs theirs? Not at all.

No matter who boycotts whom the message to fox marketing will be identical and simple:

Bill. Shut the Fuck Up.

109. You know, DailyKos really ought to be able to demolish O'Reilly's spnsorship- when you think of
the demographics involved. O'Reilly's fans are largely elderly-- the least appealing demographic. They just aren't swayed by advertising, and they don't spend alot of money anyway. DailyKos has a much younger readership, and practically every one of them owns a computer, which means they have some disposable income. That's exactly the demographic you want to aim for.

When liberal groups decide to boycott sponsors of right-wing shows, they really need to describe themselves demographically. Ideally, there should be a small a questionaire attached to online petitions devoted to this cause, as it's the one thing advertisers will really listen to, beyond sheer numbers. I guarantee you that if they receive 2000 complaints from the 23-45 crowd, and 5000 complaints from the 75+ crowd, they're going to listen to the 23-45 people.

112. Just got back from Lowe's
Bought my stuff, then went to the customer service counter to ask to talk to the manager. I explained to him that I was there, instead of Home Depot, BECAUSE they pulled their advertising. He was not aware of this, and wanted to know more. So, of course, I had to tell him WHERE I found out (here) and how glad I was of this. He was pleased that they did it, as he feels that O'Leilly is WAY over the top. He thought the "Holiday trees" instead of Christmas trees a couple years ago was just too much.

All in all, a great conversation that I'm glad I had!!

123. Great!
Lowe's and Home Despot are equidistant from me, each about 20 miles in opposite directions. Now I know which road out of town to take when my home needs fixing after the local hardware store is closed.

126. I had a moral delimna today
I needed to buy a lawnmower and decided to get one of the reel mower types since I have a really small yard. Went to my locally owned Ace and then True Value stores and neither of them carry mowers. So onto the big box stores. Home Depot carries the Scotts brand mower that's made in the USA. Lowes carries another brand made in China. Decided to go with the made in the US model. Overall the last few weeks I've spent about 300 bucks at Lowes and just over 100 at Home Depot. I just bought my first home so I need pretty much everything. I stop at the local shops first and if they don't have what I need or the price is way too high I'll hit Lowes and then as a last resort I'll stop at HD.

131.  Home Depot wants you to shut up

Oh, you're gonna love this. Home Depot is now telling its customers that if you have the audacity to complain about BillOReilly.com's death threats against Hillary Clinton and suggestions of a terrorist attack against the US Capitol then YOU are the problem.

Here is the letter Home Depot is sending its customers:

Our advertising campaigns have one simple objective to communicate with audiences in the most effective way possible. The Company is receptive to many forms and styles of media as we seek a balanced representation of programming to reach our customer base. Unfortunately campaigns like this one cause us to take time away from our sustainability goals and address a variance of political views.

Get it? If you complain about Home Depot sponsoring Bill O'Reilly's hate, then YOU are hurting the environment because you're wasting their precious time.

Somebody in corporate communications is going to get fired.
