So, what phrases are you sick of that DUer's use ad nauseum? Here's some of mine!
Edited on Fri Jul-27-07 09:08 PM by Elrond Hubbard
1. 'speaking truth to power' - used at least 1,000 times a day by DUer's. I don't know what it means, and I don't think most of them do either.

2. 'meme' - if you can't beat it into my head with a hammer and chisel, then why bother?

3. '' - this one causes my homicidal tendencies to boil to the surface. why do people feel the need to do this at the start of a flamewar? if i could murder a smilie, it would be this one.

4. 'holding their feet to the fire' - okay, okay, we get it already. do we all read from the same script??

5. 'IBTL' - this is the one I'm most guilty of personally. only an asshole posts 'IBTL'...kind of like...oh right, me. dammit.

6. ':eyes:' - this is how people say 'I don't have a real argument so I'm going to pretend your argument is too stupid to respond to.'

7. 'concern' 'concern trolls' 'thanks for your concern' etc. etc. etc. :argh: - just a nasty way of insulting people who say things you don't like.

8. in general, the tendency to dogpile, groupthink, and snipe at people in place of intelligent discourse

Hey, let's show a little individuality, people. Do you want to be like the office prick who says 'think outside the box' and 'change the paradigm' every five minutes? Nobody wants to be him. If you're him, you probably don't want to be.
When a thread contains several dozen instances of 'speaking truth to power'...that's a sign of a problem.
Anyone else have some posting pet peeves on DU?

Speaking truth to power is a great phrase. It means exactly what it says... Speaking the truth to those in power. You really couldn't figure that out?

And even knowing what it means, it still annoys me.

A phrase can be a great thing, but I think that one is about done to death. Just my opinion.

3. I LOATHE that eye-roll smiley
I don't care about the popcorn one. But the only time I ever see the eye-roll smiley is when someone is being an ass.

And I don't mind the word "meme" either. It's just another way to say "Talking Point" or "lie" or "piece of disinformation" or "fucking bullshit."

Unless it's ours, of course, and then it's just a mindworm that gets the message out to more people.

The first is the continued use of dipshit words and phrases picked up on free republic until they are too worn out to crawl away, whimpering.
The use of "noone" when the poster actually means "no one," contracting two words to make a non-word.

It reminds me of the joke about the tourist at a Boston convention who asked his cabbie if he knew where he could get scrod. The cabbie replied, "Sure, but it's been a long time since I have heard it used in the pluperfect tense like that."

Bada-bing.

27. Strawman - Most people don't actually know what the hell it means or how to use it.
People using strawmen - Because it is a dishonest way to try to win an argument.

People posting intentionally divisive topics and then acting surprised when flame wars start.

People using the phrase "enabling fascism" for every thing that they disagree with.

Small groups of extremists starting a divisive thread and then PM bombing each other for backup and swarming.

People comparing modern day events to some of the greatest historical triumphs in our nations history.

People making blanket, broad-brush statements about groups of DUers or DU in general (sexist, homophobic, racist, knee jerk, etc.).

People recommending the shit out of a thread to prove a point instead of because of actual content.

Aggrandizement of contemporary public figures.

47. Gotta Agree WIth You 100% On Every One Of Them.
Great list!

I just want to add one more:

When posters say "ok, you can have the last word now" to people in a condescending manner, as if the poster shouldn't be expected to respond to the prior attack done before the declaration. Allowing someone to have the last word is honorable when done appropriately, which is when someone summarizes their argument politely and then allows the other poster to offer their final insight. But when it's done only as a way to try and undermine the opposition in such a way to portray that if the poster responds, they're doing something wrong; and when done in a way that the argument hadn't been expected to come to a conclusion but the "you can have the last word now" statement was just thrown out of the blue to portray the opposition as reactionary; is quite childish, weak, deceptive and stupid.

I see some do that to others frequently and it's such a ridiculous way to end a debate.

Since I consider it incredibly disrespectful. I'm guilty of it, too, at times. Doesn't mean I like it.

So I'll let you have the last word now because this has been a monumental waste of time trying to get you to understand these facts. I have no reason to believe, no matter how many times I have to repost the facts, that you will all of a sudden become aware to why you were in the wrong here. I fully expect your reply to repeat yet again the same false statements, accusations and premises that I've already handily defeated and refuted ten times over now. So go for it. I can't stop you. But I'm done. There's nothing more I can possibly do to explain this to you.

So I'll let you have your last words. Have at it.

289. Nope. In Fact, I'm A Bit Surprised You And A Few Below You Were Foolish Enough To Think So.
Pay attention to this part:

"But when it's done only as a way to try and undermine the opposition in such a way to portray that if the poster responds, they're doing something wrong; and when done in a way that the argument hadn't been expected to come to a conclusion but the "you can have the last word now" statement was just thrown out of the blue to portray the opposition as reactionary; is quite childish, weak, deceptive and stupid."

What's meant by that is when a poster just throws it out there without having really given their final thoughts or any reasoned arguments whatsoever, but instead do so with the ONLY purpose being to paint the person responding as reactionary and with no ability do debate; as if to say "yeah yeah, we know you need to get the last word, so go babble something else since you need to feed your ego" blah blah blah. It is referencing when there was no real finality or drawing down of the argument or intend to close the argument through actual debate, but instead when it is done not as a closing but as an actual attack on the poster. Can you not understand this difference?

For example: What you posted above of mine does not fall into this category. There was a lengthy debate beforehand and I summarized my arguments and issued my final thoughts, while giving a sense of closure on my part. I then threw the ball into your court for you to have your final thoughts. Nothing wrong with it when it is done in such a way. If you actually opened your eyes to that post, you'd see how lengthy it was and that there was true effort to refute your silly arguments and summarize why they were wrong. Debates have to come to a close sometime, and there's nothing wrong with a poster initiating that effort.

But my post you linked is not anywhere near what I'm talking about. I'm talking about when the response offered no real logic or refutation, was in the middle of an attempted debate, and thrown right out of the blue not with the purpose of actually summarizing position and finding closure, but only as a personal attack on the opposition.

So I find it quite funny that you used it to try some childish 'gotcha' on me, even though it isn't at all the type of post being referenced. I find it even funnier that a few others who fail to have critical thinking skills even applauded you as if your childish 'gotcha' had any merit. One of them especially cracked me up, with their smilie worship of you, because it showed how reactionary and childish they can be so often, without actually stepping back for a second and actually, ya know, like, thinking and stuff. I'm just amazed their smilies weren't green!

So nice try there pal, but if you can't see the difference between the post of mine you linked and the type of behavior I was talking about, then I feel sorry for you.

208. Agreed to all, In addition to "enabling fascism", another one I loathe
is "liberal fascist" as in "so you want to ban disposable plastic shopping bags? You're the kind of LIBERAL FASCIST who gives the rest of us a bad name". I have a strong feeling that many people don't know the meaning of the term "fascist".

Many broad brush statements and flame wars could be avoided simply by the addition of the word "some", as in "some young men are really disrespectful towards women these days" instead of "young men are really disrespectful towards women these days".

Another phrase I've come to loathe; "don't let the door hit you in the ass" whenever someone talks of leaving DU, the party or the country. It's unoriginal, and it's hardly constructive criticism.

106. Oh thanks
I would rather someone say that they find something stupid - and perhaps even explain why - instead of using the emoticon.

And this often is the problem. Instead of telling why they disagree with someone they just post an emoticon - the rolling eyes, the popcorn and perhaps others - and feel that they had their say.

This really is my complaint: the lack of real debate by some DUers, calling them names, instead.

Perhaps this is a generation gap thing..

110. well...when you have nothing of substance to say...
and the other person is pissing you off, and you can't make your point with an argument of substance...
your best bet is to insult, insult, insult! if you deride them, you can make it look like their argument is beneath you, that you're too SMART to counter them.
it's a bullying tactic, and merely betrays the simplemindedness and immaturity of the poster who does it.
i've tried not to do that sort of thing, but of course i have gone astray on more than one occasion when i lost my cool.

343. Sometimes there really isn't much to add, but a thread is important enough that
Edited on Sat Jul-28-07 04:52 PM by tblue37
you feel it should be seen by others rather than allowed to drop out of sight. I am always in a hurry, so I seldom bother to kick or recommend any threads, no matter how much I like them. But sometimes I will K&R without posting, because I really do think a thread should be more widely seen. Since I hate taking the time to recommend, I only do the K&R when I really feel it is important.

I think it is a good thing to do sometimes, even if I have nothing to add to the discussion. It isn't always about what I want to say, but about what someone else has said that I think others need to see said.

IOW, if you ever see a "K&R" from me with no comment on a thread of yours, consider it a very high compliment. I believe I have only used that "K&R" post 3 times--ever.

I spelled it "mem". When I wrote it I remember feeling a little self-conscious cause I realized it was kind of a hackneyed term I'd seen at web-sites. But it does come in handy and I'll probably use it again.

The term "speaking truth to power" really does get on my nerves and kind of makes me laugh  in a contrary kind of way.

Res-cute (verb): An attempt to extend the life of a failing show by:

a) Adding a kid. (Lucy, My Three Sons, Brady Bunch, Family Ties, Cosby...)

b) Adding Ted McGinley or Heather Locklear (Happy Days, Love Boat, Married w/ Children... Melrose Place, Spin City)

Maybe McCain should hire McGinley to manage a new staff of cute kids.

They make me want to switch my registration to Republican, just so I can have the pleasure of pissing off the people who take it upon themselves to endlessly monitor every poster for any hint of dissenting feeling towards any potential nominee (even though we all know they mean Hillary). Kucinich voters never ask for loyalty oaths.

160. "Stealing is always wrong"
(Gotta luv that ill logic. Even the bible sanctions some stealing. The fact is there are a LOT of DU people who fear loosing their stuff more than they fear loosing their freedom. They don't care if the cops accidentally shoot someone as long as they get to watch it on cable. This is a fear with me also. It is because deep down we all know that 99% of us have put more effort into shopping than fixing the problems of the world, and if a person stole everything they had, there would be no karma points in the world because they were out buying instead of fixing. Don't be so hard on yourselves. I am the same way. I've twice lost everything and I'm still scarred by it. But don't be so hard on the "thieves". The person who got free gas was ripped a bigger hole that Ken Lay. Stop attacking working people who are just trying to get ahead. It makes you look closer to the Freep borderline than you think you are. )

"It's for the children" (Funny how everyone was saying screw the children when i was asking why i had to work for a lower minimum wage than people over 18 for the entire 1980's, or why my programs were being cut. But I was a minority back then because i was part of the baby bust and therefore politically ignorable by the boomers and the older generations. Now that children are more of a percent of the population, people hold up their kids like little human shields to defend any self serving BS.)

"You can just survive off beans and rice." (This identifies the true trustifarian. The last ass who said this then admitted that he spent the money he saved on BEER. Anyone who has Really had to take ramen or rice or mac and cheese for a week would never say this to a poor person. Instead they would cook for them and feed them, just like Christ would have.)

"That's an urban myth." (When you are describing something that happened to yourself, not a friend or a cousin's friend but something you saw and lived.)

"It's only a few bad apples..." (There have been so many cases where entire precincts had to be cleaned out and started over. Why is this myth still around? Because everyone has a relative who is a cop or thinks they know someone who is a cop. Funny thing is, when I ask cops if they have any friends who aren't cops? 80% of them tell me they don't.)

"Greatest Generation" (The plurality of current 70-90 year olds are called this. When I was young I met the parents of the so called greatest folk. Back when the Greatest Generation was 40-60 years old i heard stories from the parents they left in retirement homes about what selfish jerks, screwing up the world, all the GG's were and how they didn't know how to have a good time and were wasting their lives. The GG's parents are about 90-120 years old now and I recall all the great stories of rum-running, rolling down stockings, working the railroad, building cars, digging the panama canal, and all sorts of other great American things. GG is just a way to sell books that the GG's fell for like EVERY other Madison Avenue pitch. Just like they fell for Fox NewZ.)

My annoyance is with those who drag it out everytime someone says something that they don't want to hear.

'Meme' is perfectly acceptable on its own. Just overused. And used improperly.

:eyes: is just fine too...but not when it is used in lieu of rational discourse...in other words, being a dick for the sake of being a dick.

370. "Meme" has an actual meaning, and it isn't just another term
Edited on Sat Jul-28-07 06:11 PM by tblue37
for talking point.

Richard Dawkins coined the term "meme" in The Selfish Gene to describe ideas that are self-replicating, the way genes are—units of culture, spread by imitation. Just as genes do, memes compete for survival according to the mechanism of natural selection. The most successful memes are the ones that get more copies of themselves "into the next generation" of ideas.

The point of using "meme" in political discourse is to suggest that certain ideas are of a sort that might, once they are injected into the idea stream, catch hold and successfully compete against memes that we need to get rid of. For example, the meme that patriotism is the same as supporting whoever happens to have control of the government needs to be countered, but simply saying "Patriotism is not the same as supporting whoever happens to be in control of the government" would never make it as a meme. For this reason, I support using "Good German" against people who support the government no matter what, because that's what they think patriotism is. Successful memes are the sort that are easily accepted, easy to remember, clear in their meaning, etc. Soundbites for the deepest level of the mind. (Of course, using “Good German” against someone just because they disagree with you is ridiculous.)

A talking point can become a meme, if it is successful enough to become widely received wisdom. George Lakoff’s writings about how Democrats need to use framing more successfully is also about turning mere talking points into successful memes.

I would like to recommend a book entitled The Meme Machine, by Susan Blackmore (Dawkins wrote the foreword for it). She takes Dawkins’ idea and explores it in much more detail.

What kind of robot lets other people speak for them? That just reeks of mindless idol worship. There are some politicians I really, really like, but even them I disagree with occasionally. Think and speak for YOURSELVES, people.

Also, anyone and everyone who doesn't toe the DU/"progressive" line being "DLC." Conyers and Pelosi are "DLC" or "DLC sympathizers" or part of the "DLC mindset" according to these idiots, half of whom I highly doubt even know what the DLC is.

I agree with your list, too, especially "speak truth to power" and "hold their feet to the fire." Both are just cheap and easy ways to feel like a daring revolutionary activist without actually doing anything.

372. "____ for president!"
Every time ANYONE says one thing certain people agree with, those people begin chanting "____ for president!" They do it for Oprah, Murtha, Ron Paul, and just about anyone else who says ONE thing they agree with. They don't even consdier whether the person they are touting for president would make a good president or even supports any of the many policy positions the poster supposedly supports. The "Ron Paul for president"-ers especially piss me off, since he is very strongly in support of many, many, many positions that would horrify them if they ever bothered to look at the people they are suawking "___ for president!" about.

Even a stopped clock is right twice a day. Pat Buchanan has always been against the Iraq invasion and occupation and holds Little Boots in complete contempt, calling him radical and saying he is not a conservative at all. Buchanan's American Conservative Magazine even did a cover story bout how Bush was no conservative. But that doesn't mean we should want Pat Buchanan for president, now, does it?

232. The word "Nazi" used for individuals who are simply seen as bossy or interfering
E.g. 'health nazis'; 'smoking nazis'; 'recycling nazis'; etc. I think the term should be reserved for oppressive genocidal dictatorships and their supporters.

328. Oh, it's just a phrase I've seen everywhere.
"Obama is playing checkers, but Clinton is playing chess" - "Democrats play checkers, but Republicans play chess"

The phrase just annoys me, both by the implication that intelligent people are stupid, and that chess is somehow terribly complicated.

If you're wondering what go is... here ya go :) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Go_%28board_game%29

Unfortunately, this first started out when Kerry supporters assured us Kerry was playing chess, that any moment he would make some grand move against the Swiftboaters.

He got the part about how to resign right at least.

And none of those things really bother me.

Thanks for you concern does not seem to me to be used for the purpose you suggest. It's usually when the post responded to has attitudes that make it very suspect that the poster is really a right wing spy. If you spend any time with wingnuts you can pick up their language issues and themes, and since they walk in lockstep, they are much more affected by it.

Also such posts often seek to divide and conquer.

I don't agree with your number 8 at all. There is a lot of intelligent discourse.

There is also a lot of irony and joking, maybe you're taking that literally.

...people who grossly exaggerate your stance to mock you instead of using common sense or logic to counter your point.... or better yet, instead of accepting your fucking opinion because you have a right to it. As in, if you forgive the Dems for being cautious about impeachment, you're a Bush apologist and should go post in freeperland. Or, if you think Vick should pay for his brutal abuse of animals, you're suddenly immune to all human suffering and could watch children die dry-eyed, but dammit, those dogs must be saved. Or simply daring to say that Cindy Sheehan is not a politician - and that's both good and bad - suddenly means you don't care her son died and that she shouldn't run against Pelosi because she's "not rich." That was the winner of the silliest and most disengenuious "argument" I've seen on this board in the 3 years I've been posting here. Gimme a fucking break. There ARE such things as gray areas - yes, Virginia, you can actually think two things at once! - and people who refuse to accept that simple concept - or the idea that you simply have a right to your opinion without being ridiculed - just piss me off with their childishness.

277. "Loyalty oath," "Blind loyalty..."
An oath requires a signature and implies a contract. No one is required to "sign" anything here. People who complain about being "forced" to post "loyalty oaths" are exaggerating and acting melodramtic.

Also, "BLIND loyalty" is another phrase I despise. The whole purpose of DU is to spread information amongst Democrats. No poster here is "blind," (I don't mean literally blind) meaning, they support a candidate or a party or an ideology 100% without caveats. That's just impossible, but that's what the phrase implies. It make me wanna fuckin' puke when I see it.

Also, vegans/vegetarians calling meat-eaters "animal-haters." So, are us omnivores safe in assuming that vegatarians hate plants? Man, you fuckers DESPISE vegetables so much you cut 'em up and EAT 'em! Gross!

"Strawman." Learn the meaning before you use it, please.

324. Thanks for the Saturday morning laugh
This thread was hysterical!!!

I personally dislike acronyms. It comes across as both lazy and exclusive. If one has something to say, they should say it in their "own" words and in a way that doesn't make others feel like outsiders. I hate "club mentality". It reminds me of republicans.

Elrond, you are really funny! Thanks again.

The whole point of this thread is just for people to gripe about annoying behavior, not to tell anyone how to think or act.
It's all done with a sense of humor, I'm glad you were able to appreciate that. :hi:

I think it's important to laugh at ourselves as well. We're silly people.

327. #8 - reactionaries
There are people on this board who love to accuse the right of facism, but man, question their nearly religious grip on their agenda, and look out ... (whether it's kucinich, Obama, Hillary, Sheehan, Nader, Anti-Nader, or whatever cause it is which they support without question)
It's a pile on.
People insinuate you are a Freeper. Or a Troll. Or stupid white male. Or a radical feminist dyke. Or a whatever.

I used to read DU an awful lot to keep in touch with issues on the American left.

But, as I've watched more and more Democratic party candidates pay lip service to my values, and then run to the right ... and knowing full well that DU has said that you can not support a candidate running against Democrats (even if their views are more inline with what many of us view as Democratic Values), well, it's know wonder free speech and great debates are going extinct on the board.

DU would rather be a big player in a corporate Democratic Party then help promote Democratic Party values.

So, when Hillary Republic Clinton supports the Iraq war, supports legislation that gives more power to health care corporations, when she supports trade legislation that wounds the American labour movement ....
And then I see Ralph Nader supporting all the things I believe in ...

Well, DU will not be a good place to talk about the issues that Democrats believe in.

338. "Speaking Truth to Power" usually means:
sticking it to a low ranking, minimum wage memeber of an organization. This could be a cashier at WalMart, or an intern at a Congressman's office.

Most of the time it involves shouting at and insulting someone who generally can't insult you back.

Edited on Sat Jul-28-07 04:42 PM by tblue37
RIGHT NOW!!!!! without telling us what is going on. I also hate when whole threads go on and on with nothing but brief, "OMG!" or "That's so cool!" or "I can't believe he just said that!" kinds of comments, all the while ignorong pleas from cube rats or others who can't get to a TV or radio to at least tell them what the hell the thread is even about, or what is going on, if they already know the topic of the thread.

Since I am severely hearing-impaired, I don't listen to radio or watch much TV, so such threads really drive me up a wall.

when people post nasty responses to posts that are good-bye's.

I understand the impluse, being left is not a positive thing, but somehow the wise-crack remarks make me feel like i'm back in grade school... "I know you are but what am I?"- kind of thing, but this is my hang-up, and people have a right to post whatever they want.

an "I'm feeling like I don't belong here" or "I'm leaving the US" or 'looking to' kind of post-

Sometimes the person posting might just need to hear that they aren't alone in their perspective- (at least that's my take on it) and getting kicked when they are down seems like .. bad form-??

368. i'm a little ambivalent on that issue...
i think a lot of times the 'i'm leaving du' threads are pure attention seeking, and in one case in the lounge, one last attack on his/her enemies as well as a denial of responsibility...in which case i have no problem with telling the person 'good riddance'
if the person is just lonely or sad or something, i may something nice, but i won't beg them to stay either.

374. i can see that,
and you are probably right most of the time.
When my kids were littler, i remember they'd say "you just HATE me!" in they way you are describing. Sometimes i didn't respond well, but -for me- either saying nothing, or simply reminding them of why that wasn't true usually worked, or at least didn't haunt me at 3:00am.

I'm kind of an anomaly here, i don't always key into personalities well.

I can agree playing into attention seeking behaviour wouldn't be a positive thing, and i'm not big on begging either-

peace,

387. More pet peeves...
1. Posting an entire block of emoticons... is there some reason I need to look at 4 dozen bouncing green smilies when I can see ONE just fine?

2. Freeperisms (HUGH!11!!!, series, moran, screwn, etc.)... after so many years they are no longer humorous and just makes us look stupid.

3. When unable to come up with a reasonable response, insult spelling and grammar.

4. Believing that Freepers have worse spelling and grammar than we do (they don't - we're just as guilty) and when we do it using the excuse that it was a typo or the poster just typed too fast or .

5. Starting a thread with "OMG!!!! I THINK I'M GONNA PUKE!!!" If you really feel like you're going to puke, kindly refrain from announcing it, and do it in private elsewhere... I don't want to hear about your need to puke any more than I want to hear about your need to belch or fart.

6. The latest outrage committed by Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter, Glen Beck, etc... why the hell do you listen to these freaks, and why in the world do you imagine I give a crap what they think? It's not like we don't know that everything that comes out of their mouths is well compensated crap, and that finding anything they say even worthy of notice further lines their already bulging pockets.

7. The Lounge... a total waste of bandwidth that practically advertises there are far too many of us that have nothing remotely intelligent to say, have no life and a deep need to be listened to.

8. Starting a thread that is nothing but a link... if you're too lazy to give at least a snip and your thoughts on whatever it is you're linking to, I'm too lazy to bother with it.

9. Starting yet another thread to add to the multiple threads already on the first page about a particular topic... I still get sweaty palms recalling the dozen or more first page threads discussing Colbert's balls.

10. Gleefully announcing "____ for President!" just because ____ made some worthy comment. Believe it or not, I don't chose a presidential candidate based on a single worthy comment they made on some subject.
