Iraqi leader tells Bush: Get Gen Petraeus out

Stormy relationship: Nouri al-Maliki and Gen David Petraeus

Iraqi leader tells Bush: Get Gen Petraeus out
By Damien McElroy, Foreign Affairs Correspondent
Last Updated: 2:44am BST 28/07/2007

Relations between the top United States general in Iraq and Nouri al-Maliki, the country's prime minister, are so bad that the Iraqi leader made a direct appeal for his removal to President George W Bush.

Although the call was rejected, aides to both men admit that Mr Maliki and Gen David Petraeus engage in frequent stand-up shouting matches, differing particularly over the US general's moves to arm Sunni tribesmen to fight al-Qa'eda.

One Iraqi source said Mr Maliki used a video conference with Mr Bush to call for the general's signature strategy to be scrapped. "He told Bush that if Petraeus continues, he would arm Shia militias," said the official. "Bush told Maliki to calm down."

At another meeting with Gen Petraeus, Mr Maliki said: "I can't deal with you any more. I will ask for someone else to replace you."

Gen Petraeus admitted that the relationship was stormy, saying: "We have not pulled punches with each other."

1. Hey Malaki....Talk To The Hand!!!!
I'll bet there were snickers and gfaws all around when good ole Nouri popped that request on his "buddy" georgie boooshie. Malaki better be nice to Petreus or he'll soon be feeding the fishies in the Tigris.

The irony is how we used to hear similar crap about the South Vietnam government...Thieu kept pretending he was a real leader...only to be swept away once his protectors were gone.

2. some day -- many years from now, apparently -- we will learn that arming one religious sect to fight
another will never bring about peace, but only make things worse.

You cannot simultaneously prevent and prepare for war.

3. Any "real" Iraqi leader would tell all the occupation forces to hit the road
This guy Malaki is a Bush puppet. Everyone knows that.

4. Let's watch the Ministry of Truth handle this one (with apologies

to G. Orwell).

Here are some possibilities from Tony Snow and gang:

"normal in course of war"
"sounds like democracy in action"
"out of context"
"those Iraqis just aren't going with OUR program"

:sarcasm:

7. Here's another reason to get out: NYT today has an article about
how the Iraqi government is refusing to take over most of the "completed" reconstruction projects from the Americans...something about shoddy workmanship...

Sorry, I can't find the link but the article in in today's online NYT.

12. So we're supplying arms for the civil war. Go figure.
If you're in the arms business, there's nothing better than supplying all sides.

18. The Saudi's are also supplying the Sunni insurgents
Bush's "ally".
75% of US casulaties are caused by Sunni insurgents.
And yet the US propaganda machine falsely blames Iran in order to gin up more war.

15. Ha ha ha ha so much for "He's the best we have" RWnutjob
comments on Petraeus' appointment...

But, when the only strategy you can cme up with is to assault more grandparents and call in more air strikes, I guess the local politicians may have trouble with you (how ungrateful fo Maliki doesn't he know we gave him the FREEEEEEEDOOOOOM!!!!!)

It's looking more and more like the Philippine "Insurrection" every day.
