Christians Living in a World of Temptation

I was fascinated this week to hear of the results of a survey conducted by ChristiaNet.com <http://www.christianet.com/ <http://www.christianet.com/> > , in which visitors to the site were asked if kissing is acceptable for couples who are dating.

It is a legitimate question that any young Christian should ask himself/herself when involved in a relationship. But the question triggered within me the renewed realization of how dissimilar the Christian worldview often is from the secular view. As a parent, this contrast is particularly observable because our values often deviate from the ideals of popular culture.

Consider with me the typical “dating” shows on television. In these broadcasts, the subjects frequently allude to their sexual experiences and are often seen engaging in heavy kissing (and more) on their instigated first “dates.”

I often wonder how many little kids watch these shows and subsequently, and tragically, believe that this is what is supposed to happen on a date.

1. I am not at all surprised that kissing is verboten in Falwell, Jr's world.
Not one bit.

2. Weird poll results
"Out of 271 poll respondents, 134 said that kissing is acceptable while dating, while 71 said it was not acceptable and 66 were unsure."

71 people thought kissing on a date was wrong? Are they saying that kissing should wait til after marriage?

And the 66 people who said they were unsure worry me too.

12. I have a born-again Christian family member who feels this way
she went to a wedding and told me with pride that the couple hadn't even kissed before they got married. Like that was a good thing.

4. Go ahead and pit people against affection for one another
It just serves the EAC and brings more fallen believers to us over time. Um... I think I am supposed to do an evil laugh here....ahem.... muwahahahahaha. Thank you.

5. Gluttony is not a sin in Jerry's world
He can sure rail against sin with the best of them, but he's never missed a meal.

The only time he "fasts" is when he is asleep.

Nothing I like to see better than a food-swollen man standing in the pulpit admonishing others not to yield to temptation.

8. Desensitized? How? Why? By whom?

The media! The greedy, do-anything-for-money media!

Bill O'Reilly once talked on this topic; it was about 4 years ago when he had his big special regarding the media's influence on kids. He even interviews "Insane Klown Posse" or whatever those bovines call themselves.

FOX Broadcasting, which is affiliated with FOX cable (and the FX cable channel), has had a tradition of putting out shock-jock shows of such crudity that don't push the envelope, they happily shred it and then sharpen the razor to have another go the next time somebody whips out another envelope and says "Don't open it".

Now I'm known for being less than clean at times, but I can say with utter integrity and impunity that they have crossed lines that would make me blush in abject embarrassment. (let's say they take the "direct" approach, whereas I remain "suggestive", which allows more freedom of thought.)

And Bill's partial preference to blame all the "artists" over the businesses that openly support and promote them only shows how our so-called society prefers to think that "symptoms" are the actual problems. Which is an utterly erroneous mindset. The media companies are the ones ultimately at fault for allowing degenerate filth to be promoted. They are not immune from criticism, finger pointing, or anything else. They need to clean up their acts or else the entire argument is an ersatz one. Bill might have said that in his special, but I recall him going more after the acts than the promoters of said acts.

9. This is Pretty Much Standard
for religious people throughout Western history. A few hundred years ago, women weren't even allowed to show their hair to men in parts of northern Europe. The last 40-50 years are the abberation.

11. Such taboos create fetishism
Make something forbidden and desire will create a feedback loop set up between the attraction and rejection leading to a fixation over time.

13. That is Undoubtedly True
Unfortunately, it's probably true for all ethical prohibitions. Which creates a quandary for anyone trying to live by an organized or a private system of morality.

10. Just Visit a Male Prostitute Instead
...or have them secretly enscounced with you out of the site of prying eyes, like Jeff Guckert was in the White House, so people think you are the fine upstanding hypocrite errrr ... Christian you want everybody to think you are. But under NO circumstances should you kiss a nice woman who is falling in love with you!

Moral majority indeed! These people are greedy. disgusting hypocrites who really should just shut the hell up. They still seem to think sex is worse than the misery, poverty and slavery that happens due to ignoring and even encouragement of rampant greed. Greed does far worse damage to this world than a sick obsession over the sex act.

My (disgusted) 2 cents from a Christian who believes the words of Jesus more than some greedy sex obsessed hack. Jesus said you cannot even BE a true child of God unless you put away your obsession with wealth, and who regularly "kissed his disciple Mary on the mouth," according to the Gospel of Mary that was recently discovered and was written in the first 100 years after Jesus' death,

14. You should respect yourself and respect the one you love...
It is important to know who you are and what you want and what your partner wants. Having said that, I have in my time had an occasional one night stand because I just wanted sex. I prefer to have a partner who I love. I am glad that we married. I don't believe I'm going to hell because I had sex. I'm glad I knew the difference between sex (infatuation) and intimacy (love). It is different when your heart is in it too.

I think the golden rule: is a good one (and if followed there is no murder or criminal elements)

Love, Give, Grateful.... these are the words that mean the most to me. They can cover most any category.
