I can't even begin to think about getting a newer car for another forty or fifty thousand miles!

Years ago, I can understand.

But now, you could buy "American" and half the parts and labor would be done overseas, or you could buy a Nissan assembled at a factory in Tennessee or somewhere else in the states. I mean, it seems to be six of one half dozen another now.

44. GM workers are still union
Toyota, Honda, Hyundai and other foreign car makers build in right to work states of the south and bust unions every chance they get.

I've never understood the antipathy towards GM and Ford on this progressive site. Toyota, Honda, et al really are not any better corporate citizens of this world, they just have better marketing departments.

15. who is this Gm you speak of??
ford and Gm make lousy vehicles...if you want to get a vehicle that will last forever and has a high resale value i suggest toyota.

The poster with astro van how does it have such low mileage for being so old?? You dont take long trips or anything???

You can easily get 300k or more off of one of the well built "foreign" manufacturers

37. I use it to go to and from work, ferry my kid around and do grocery shopping.
But come on, if you had a van that had 190,000 miles on it (and was used very hard as a newspaper delivery vehicle over some really baaaad road the first year we had it), would you take it on long trips?

BTW, since I usually don't use the air conditioner (except if it is raining very hard or the temps are well into the 90s, I get about 25 miles to the gallon of gas...

Astros are good vehicles.

18. We drive Chrysler and Ford products.
Anything but a foreign turd will do for our family. Here in Michigan we like to support our auto workers and their families. Every foreign car out there means a job lost to a hard working American auto workers. The American auto companies have made a real difference to many in my family and I will always buy American. Even though GM advertises in places I do not like I would still buy their products. Just my opinion.

23. hmmm thats funny
The parts gm uses you think they are made in america no they are not.. "foreign" automakers like toyota and honda etc do virtually all of their manufacturing here and run by WELL PAID americans in many cases unionized.

Chrysler is a GERMAN company lol.. Dodge is NOW separate from them again but let me ask you something about turds.........

Why did dodge continue to sell the neons with the 420a engine with a design flaw which causes the head-gaskets to go on them they knew about it in 95 never recalled never changed the design never admitted the problem and keep selling them till 2003 why?? FOR PROFIT

33. What about hard working American workers...
at Nissan plants in Tennessee and some of the other American plants for foreign cars? When I buy a car I want it to run for a decent amount of time.

I haven't owned an American car since 1987. My mother and I both had Chevrolets (which I believe is French for "piece of shit") and they both died at the same time, leaving us without decent transportation. And the cars weren't that old. Our family had bought Chevys for YEARS because my uncle was a parts manager for them back in the 70s. The 1980 Chevy Citation was a LANDMARK in crap cars. But my mom was newly widowed, and didn't know the old rule about not buying a car the first year they are made.

I won't own an American car again until they buy something worth making.

43. I really don't think the buy American car motto works anymore
In Alabama we have a few factories that make "foreign" cars. They employ a load of people. It would be foolish to buy GM or Ford because it is "American" because it would hurt our Alabama workers.

I think it is time to give up the old buy American car line. It doesn't work anymore. And anyway, the "foreign" stuff is so much better.

29. well
They cost more because..
1)They are built to higher standards

2)They get better gas mileage in every class

3)have a higher resale value

This might not be the best analogy but.....
If you buy a mobile home instead of a house sure its cheaper to buy outright but you might have to pay lot rent etc it isnt buit very well it cant withstand high winds and might need to be fixed more often and the the value goes down dramatically in a short amountof time a home holds its value well infact it goes up.

39. BUY AMERICAN/UNION MADE... BUY TOYOTA~!!!
Sad but true Toyota makes mote of their cars in the US in Union shops.
The Japanese understand and appreciate unions, so they aren't anti union.
If you buy an American car (aside from Saturn) it's probably made in MEXICO or Canada.. if you're lucky!

Also if you want great economy... buy Toyota or WV Diesels!

The Diesel cars here by VW BLOW AWAY most petrol engines. And diesel is cheaper, and burns 'cleaner' than petrol. That is it]s smokier, but it has fewer harmful chemicals coming out of it compared to gasoline.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/05/25/AR2007052502458.html

They are facing the union cert vote because of the shabby way they are treating their workers and the proposed wage freeze. Sounds like a great employer to me.

And Toyota and Honda went right along with GM in their destruction of their elcetric cars, yet GM is the one that gets bashed on these boards. Some of you people are freaking amazing, and not in a good way.

Because if I gave up my 1988 Nova, I'd have no way to get to work and I would soon be gainfully unemployed and a leech on this nation's great economic resources. No money right now to rush out and buy a more-PC model.

So, if it's all the same, I'll keep on driving my Chevy.
