Between attacks on Democrats and raking in campaign cash, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani paused Friday to explain the intricacies of the perfect hot dog. "You don't need to mess it up with all that other stuff," he said as he mingled at Wild About Harry's in the Knox-Henderson area. "Just a little mustard. That's all you need."
But Pat McAdams didn't hear the presidential contender's instructions when he ordered what Harry's calls the New York Dog. She brought the steaming hot dog piled high with sauerkraut. Mr. Giuliani says he's more accustomed to the lighter touch found at Nathan's on Coney Island, and while he touted that as the best dog in the world, he was diplomatic about the botched order.
"You can't really taste it with all that stuff on it," he said, scraping the kraut off with a fork...
But it was the hot dog that created much of the discussion. Harry Coley, who has operated Wild About Harry's for 10 years, uses Chicago's Vienna beef for his hot dogs. "You eat Vienna beef unless you want to die," Mr. Coley said. "It's the best."
When a reporter told Mr. Giuliani that Vienna beef was more prevalent in Chicago-style hot dogs, he shrugged, perhaps tired of debating the crucial policy issue. "Really?" he asked. "Chicago beef is good."
