It's 3:30 AM here and just got back from seeing Pink in concert
Edited on Sat Jul-28-07 08:45 PM by Solly Mack
It was a free concert sponsored by local radio and Rothaus Beer. This is in Germany, btw. It started at 2 PM local time.

Several acts performed, with Pink as the main event. There was food and games and prizes and street shows throughout the day, as well as several stages with local bands performing. Pink went on at 9:30 PM and played until 11:00 PM - she then did 3 songs for an encore.

Pink shared with the audience her hero - Janis Joplin.

I grinned big. (Could feel it coming)

She then did a few Joplin covers. After that she asked the audience to join in on another cover, the "What's Up" song by 4 Non-Blondes.

25 years and my life is still
I'm trying to get up that great big hill of hope
For a destination
I realized quickly when I knew I should
that the world was made up of this brotherhood of man
for whatever that means
And so I cry sometimes when I'm lying in bed
Just to get it all out what's in my head
And I am feeling a little peculiar
And so I wake in the morning and I step outside
And I take a deep breath
And I get real high
And I scream from the top of my lungs
What's goin' on
And I say, hey hey hey hey
I say hey, what's going on?
And I say, hey hey hey hey
I say hey, what's going on?
ooh, ooh ooh...
And I try, oh my God do I try
I try all the time in this institution
And I pray, oh my God do I pray
I pray every single day for a revolution
And so I cry sometimes when I'm lying in bed
Just to get it all out what's in my head
And I am feeling a little peculiar
And so I wake in the morning and I step outside
And I take a deep breath
Then I get real high
And I scream from the top of my lungs
what's goin' on
And I say, hey hey hey hey
I say hey, what's going on?
And I say, hey hey hey hey
I say hey, what's going on...
25 years and my life is still
I'm trying to get up that great big hill of hope
For a destination.

She asked that we sing loud and let our feelings be known - one voice to the world.

So we did - and it felt great.

Then Pink said she would - now - like to get political.

She again asked that we join in - one voice.

Dear Mr. President.

So we did.

I'm crying - the young German girl next to me is crying. Others around me are crying. Peace signs are popping up everywhere. The energy was incredible.

One voice. A simple message.

Get angry. Raise your voice. Demand answers. Stop the madness.

23. How do you sleep while the rest of us cry
Dear Mr. President
Come take a walk with me
Let's pretend we're just two people and
You're not better than me
I'd like to ask you some questions if we can speak honestly

What do you feel when you see all the homeless on the street
Who do you pray for at night before you go to sleep
What do you feel when you look in the mirror
Are you proud

How do you sleep while the rest of us cry
How do you dream when a mother has no chance to say goodbye
How do you walk with your head held high
Can you even look me in the eye
And tell me why

Dear Mr. President
Were you a lonely boy
Are you a lonely boy
Are you a lonely boy
How can you say
No child is left behind
We're not dumb and we're not blind
They're all sitting in your cells
While you pave the road to hell

What kind of father would take his own daughter's rights away
And what kind of father might hate his own daughter if she were gay
I can only imagine what the first lady has to say
You've come a long way from whiskey and cocaine

How do you sleep while the rest of us cry
How do you dream when a mother has no chance to say goodbye
How do you walk with your head held high
Can you even look me in the eye

Let me tell you bout hard work
Minimum wage with a baby on the way
Let me tell you bout hard work
Rebuilding your house after the bombs took them away
Let me tell you bout hard work
Building a bed out of a cardboard box
Let me tell you bout hard work
Hard work
Hard work
You don't know nothing bout hard work
Hard work
Hard work
Oh

How do you sleep at night
How do you walk with your head held high
Dear Mr. President
You'd never take a walk with me
Would You?

4. Pink's new album is wonderful.
I bought it on Itunes last month and I've been listening to it in my car. There are several wonderful songs on this CD - I highly recommend it. I'm not surprised that Janis is one of her inspirations. She sounds just like her sometimes.

I love supporting someone who is so cool offstage AND onstage.

I've liked all her albums, but IND is my favorite of hers; "Who Knew" was my favorite song last year (the first time it was released in the US). I'm glad the US is finally waking up and realizing what a great album this is.

Thanks for posting! Glad you had a good time at the concert!

40. Well, if things keep up here in the US or get worse, I may be moving with the Pachafamily to join
you in Germany! :hi:

How ironic too if that did happen...my grandparents left Germany because of the Nazis and I may return to Germany because of Bush... :eyes:

I love Germany and miss it often. I have so many childhood memories, especially around holidays. There is nothing like Weihnachten in Munich and going to the ChristKindl Markt....the smell of Lebkuchen...yumm....

So tell me Solly - how are the Germans reacting and talking about what is happening here in the US? I know from my own family background (Grandparents escaped during Nazi Germany, eventually my family returned) and the sensitivity to remembering what happened and how it happened, are they just watching in horror and angst with what Bush is doing here? I'm sure that they are all watching carefully, especially nervous about anything Bush might do related to Iran.

By the way - another thing that I found so wonderful about Germany I didn't know until recently - that there are more solar installations per capita in Germany than any other country in the world. They are also the originators of "Die Gruene Punkt" and packaging and recycling requirements in Europe.

PS: Where exactly are you living? I wasn't familiar with that town and area. I grew up in Gruenwald, south of Munich and then eventually lived in Schwabing in Northern Munich.

41. If you come to Germany
don't forget your anti-Bush T-Shirts, we'll love you for that... ;) Because, first thing a lot of us Germans want to know when meeting an American nowadays is: "Who did you vote for?" We're not anti-American... the majority of us are just anti-Bush.

Here's an article about American students in Germany. It describes our stance towards Americans pretty well I think:

42. In Mannheim..the outskirts
Recycling is made easy here!My kitchen was designed with that in mind... with small size bins under the sink area (built-in)..and just across the parking lot, the large bins for pick-up (to include a bin for old batteries).

We have a handy "sort" center for old cleaning products and tires, etc...for proper disposal. Everything available to make recycling a new habit. It wasn't new for me but it's been way easier here than other places I've lived.

People here will talk about what is happening and I've had older Germans speak on what they see as reminders...and they do wonder if America can see what they see. Never rude - just very frank in that German way. I say it that way because some newcomers find it a little rude until they learn it's not intended that way - just Germans being German - straight to the point.

It's not Americans per se they take issue with(for the most part) - it is our government. Though some were doubtful of even us after the election 2004. People felt America would rid themselves of Bush by then...and when that didn't happen...well, that was certainly a "WTF" moment.

We are all "we, the people" , struggling against corruption in government...and that any one government can cause harm and pain to people all over, so all of "we, the people", better learn from the lessons of others.
