Conservatives Refuse To Appear On Fox News To Publicly Defend Gonzales

On Fox News Sunday this morning, former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich (R-GA) refused to defend Attorney General Alberto Gonzales against accusations that he may have perjured himself before Congress. “It’s very damaging…we badly need an attorney general who is above any question,” said Gingrich. He continued:

Both the president and country are better served if the attorney general is a figure of competence. Sadly, the current attorney general is not seen as any of those things. I think it’s a liability for the president. More importantly, it’s a liability for the United States of America.

Later in the show, host Chris Wallace revealed that no conservative would willingly defend Gonzales on Fox. “By the way, we invited White House officials and Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee to defend Attorney General Gonzales,” said Wallace. “We had no takers.” Watch it at link~

The efforts of right-wingers to distance themselves from Gonzales has a reached a fever pitch in the wake of his disastrous Senate testimony last week.

Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT), appearing on ABC’s This Week, said “of course” Gonzales has a credibility problem. On MSNBC’s Hardball on Friday, Rep. Chris Cannon (R-UT), the ranking member of the Judiciary Subcommittee on Commercial and Administrative Law, squirmed when asked by host Chris Matthews if he thought Gonzales “is a good attorney general?” Cannon refused to answer the question, offering instead, “He’s a good guy.”

National Review Online’s Jonah Goldberg, a reliable partisan defender of the Bush administration, admitted on Thursday that the evidence against Gonzales is compelling. “I think Gonzales has long, long, long outserved whatever usefulness he might once have had,” wrote Goldberg. “And — hey — maybe he actually did perjure himself.”

If Special Prosecutor Paul Clement fails to appoint a special counsel to look into Gonzales’ “words and deeds,” the New York Times writes today, “Congress should impeach Mr. Gonzales.”

1. Bush's pig-headed refusal to get rid of Gonzales is just another slap
in the face to the American public, about whom he does not give a damn.
As Bush has shown with his every devious move, he has no loyalty
to this country, to our Constitution or to the American people at large.
He thinks being President is a game, and he's the one with the ball.

What he lacks as a person is what had made him the worse president
ever, and the word is this: Respect.

Oh - and also, this: Conscience.

6. Hatch blamed all of Gonzo's problems on Democrats. He wouldn't shut up.
Hatch was using the classic blow-hard, bullying, talk above everyone else, & keep talking Republican tactics. And Snufalapagus let him get away with it.

4. "...above any question" - yep, we desperately need...
a fresh start in our government, with employees (we must remember they work for us!) who are ABOVE ANY QUESTION.

Have to give props to Gingrich for that, regardless of his underlying motive(s).

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0071853/quotes

Bring out yer dead.

Large Man with Dead Body: Here's one.
The Dead Collector: That'll be ninepence.
The Dead Body That Claims It Isn't: I'm not dead.
The Dead Collector: What?
Large Man with Dead Body: Nothing. There's your ninepence.
The Dead Body That Claims It Isn't: I'm not dead.
The Dead Collector: 'Ere, he says he's not dead.
Large Man with Dead Body: Yes he is.
The Dead Body That Claims It Isn't: I'm not.
The Dead Collector: He isn't.
Large Man with Dead Body: Well, he will be soon, he's very ill.
The Dead Body That Claims It Isn't: I'm getting better.
Large Man with Dead Body: No you're not, you'll be stone dead in a moment.
The Dead Collector: Well, I can't take him like that. It's against regulations.
The Dead Body That Claims It Isn't: I don't want to go on the cart.
Large Man with Dead Body: Oh, don't be such a baby.
The Dead Collector: I can't take him.
The Dead Body That Claims It Isn't: I feel fine.
Large Man with Dead Body: Oh, do me a favor.
The Dead Collector: I can't.
Large Man with Dead Body: Well, can you hang around for a couple of minutes? He won't be long.
The Dead Collector: I promised I'd be at the Robinsons'. They've lost nine today.
Large Man with Dead Body: Well, when's your next round?
The Dead Collector: Thursday.
The Dead Body That Claims It Isn't: I think I'll go for a walk.
Large Man with Dead Body: You're not fooling anyone, you know. Isn't there anything you could do?
The Dead Body That Claims It Isn't: I feel happy. I feel happy.
The Dead Collector glances up and down the street furtively, then silences the Body with his a whack of his club.
Large Man with Dead Body: Ah, thank you very much.
The Dead Collector: Not at all. See you on Thursday.
Large Man with Dead Body: Right.

10. Why would they need Repugs to defend Gonzales
when Chris Wallace, slimy, toadying lackey, did it for them? He all but flatly stated, "Come on, don't you guys have anything better to do than go after Gonzales? So he lied to Congress, so he allegedly went to Ashcroft in secret to get him to reverse a Justice Department decision that warrantless wiretapping was illegal, so the White House is stonewalling to prevent the truth from coming out--you guys are just big meanies. Political theater! Political theater!"

12. Gonzo will be defended.
They were late with the talking points, but the points have recently been distributed. One major one is the difference between the eavesdropping and data mining programs at the NSA--a red herring that Gonzo used in his latest testimony.

13. Not true. Orin Hatch is defending Gonzo all over the place.
A good reason why Hatch should never be nominated to SCOTUS. He is unworthy by defending a liar and perjuror.

15. Are they trying to set up Bush to be able to do a recess appointment replacement?...
Edited on Sun Jul-29-07 11:06 AM by calipendence
... of Gonzales once he submits his resignation in the coming weeks. And therefore then congress won't have a say in Gonzales's replacement until after Bush leaves office. Anything we can do to prevent some sort of recess appointment? Is there any way we can DEMAND a special prosecutor through a new appointment if this happens and hold an axe over the new appointee's head if he/she refuses to do so?
