Out Of Right Field, Conservatives Gush Over Clinton
McClatchy Newspapers

WASHINGTON — Since when is Hillary Clinton the idol of conservative pundits?

After Clinton delivered a foreign-policy haymaker to Barack Obama's head during a Democratic presidential debate Tuesday:

• Fred Barnes of The Weekly Standard, a neoconservative weekly, wrote that she answered the now-famous "would-you-meet-with-despots" question "firmly and coolly."

• Rich Lowry of National Review, a conservative weekly, gushed: "She excels. ... Clinton has run a nearly flawless campaign and has done more than any other Democrat to show she's ready to be president."

• David Brooks, conservative columnist at The New York Times, wrote that Clinton "seems to offer the perfect combination of experience and change" and is changing perceptions in a way that may persuade voters to give her a second look.

• Charles Krauthammer, conservative columnist at The Washington Post, summed up the Clinton-Obama smackdown: "The grizzled veteran showed up the clueless rookie."

All this from a crowd that has spent the better part of two decades demonizing Clinton and her husband, former President Clinton.

1. Of course they are.
They're propping her up to get the nomination, only to attempt to destroy her in a manner we've never seen. My guess is that what they did to Gore and Kerry will seem like child's play compared to what they have in store for Hillary.

2. That Should Tell Us Something
I think they consider her the candidate they can most likely swiftboat effectively and beat. Very worrying.

3. As I browse through
other sites where they allow comments from mostly anyone, HuffPo, After Downing, etc I occasionally see some freeper posting something to the effect that they would LOVE to see Hillary get the nomination, on election day, that would energize and get out the vote against her resulting in a RePuke President. I think there are many freeper that really believe that one of the RePuke candidates has a good chance of getting elected, especially if they are running against Hillary.

4. This is no surprise to me.

Conservatives believe their only chance is if we nominate Hillary. She's a win-win for them, in fact. Why? The extreme left will not be excited to help her (she won't be forgiven for her pro-war vote), the extremists on the right will be very excited to come out in droves to defeat her, and (if all else fails) she is the most right-leaning candidate (most notably on defense).

7. The RW machine started the "Hillary should be the Dem nominee because she's so wonderful" meme, 2

years ago. They MUST HAVE dirt on her or Bill. They want her to be the candidate so bad, they can taste it. I heard a RW talking head on Tweety's show the other day and he said how great Hillary was for going after Obama. I had to pick my jaw up off the floor and go clean my ears out!

There's a reason ALL the RW pundits are being gentle and nice to Hillary and it isn't because they like her. They want her to be our candidate so they can destroy her during the general election.
