PHOENIX (AP) - Officers responding to a report of an exorcism on a young girl found her grandfather choking her and used stun guns to subdue the man, who later died, authorities said Sunday.

The 3-year-old girl and her mother, who was also in the room during the struggle between 49-year-old Ronald Marquez and officers, were hospitalized, police said. Their condition was unavailable.

The relative who called police said an exorcism had also been attempted Thursday. "The purpose was to release demons from this very young child," said Sgt. Joel Tranter. Officers arrived at the house Saturday and entered when they heard screaming coming from a bedroom, Tranter said.

A bed had been pushed up against the door; the officers pushed it open a few inches and saw Marquez choking his bloodied granddaughter, who was crying in pain and gasping, Tranter said.

A bloody, naked 19-year-old woman who police later determined to be Marquez's daughter and the girl's mother was in the room, chanting "something that was religious in nature," Tranter said.

At first, I misinterpreted the beginning and thought that I was about to read that the 3 yr old died. Though traumatized I'm sure, thank God she's ok. This is so beyond disturbing.

I get what you're saying, and it's probably true and very sad that she was brain-washed from birth, but if she allowed that evil psycho to choke her daughter while she stood by naked, bloody, and chanting nonsense, then it's already too late to help her. She's just a monster like the old man.

The article doesn't mention it, but I sincerely hope the child was immediately removed from the house and given to the sane relative.

So, all our police must be physically capable of kicking anyone's butt? Do you know that the officer could have punched the guy and that it would be in time to save the girl? There were others in the room, you know that they would allow the officer to punch the guy? How can you be sure a punch wouldn't have caused death to the guy?
I won't dispute the slide into fascism, but this isn't a case proving it. This is simply a tragedy for an obviously disfunctional family, and the police officer(s) involved.

Where did I say anything about killing being simpler? The story doesn't say the police used excessive force, nor lethal force. The story simply says he died later, hell, a punch may have killed him quicker. For crying out loud the man was assaulting a 3-year-old! If protecting children is fascism, throw another stawman at me and I'll take the title of fascist.

What a tragedy his loss is to the world. Who knows how many successful exorcisms/child murders he could have performed/committed? What a shame.
