Colbert showed Snow that Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi had already signed his cast. "I was hoping someone from the administration could sign it and therefore help heal a divided nation."

Snow agreed, prompting Colbert to ask whether the president, Vice President Dick Cheney or embattled Attorney General Alberto Gonzales would sign his cast as well, which got resounding no's from the presidential spokesman.

"What if I was in the hospital, would he come to my room and sign it there?" Colbert said, a reference to a controversial visit Gonzales paid to then-Attorney General John Ashcroft, who was critically ill, to discuss intelligence matters.

"No," Snow said curtly. Colbert once starred on the hit Jon Stewart's "The Daily Show" on cable television's Comedy Central before launching his own "The Colbert Report" in which he takes the tone of a ultra-conservative news anchor.

Last year, Colbert had trouble getting many laughs from the White House and official Washington when he was the entertainment for the annual White House Correspondents Association Dinner and roasted Bush.

"I believe the government that governs best is the government that governs least. And by these standards, we have set up a fabulous government in Iraq," Colbert said in 2006.

While his performance was panned among the Washington elite as not particularly funny, it was well-received by fans of Colbert's show and topped downloads on the Internet.
