Sgt. Jacob Steven Schmuecker
Services for Sgt. Jacob Steven Schmuecker, 27, of Norfolk will be held Monday, July 30, at 10:30 a.m. at the Community Bible Church, Norfolk, 401 E. Park Avenue.

There will be limited seating for family and friends.

Sgt. Schmuecker died Saturday, July 21, 2007, in Balad, Iraq.

Dr. George Heusinger and Pastor Arin Hess will officiate. Interment will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Norfolk, with military rites by the Nebraska Funeral Honors Team.

Closed casket visitation will be 3-7 p.m. Sunday at the Howser-Fillmer Mortuary.

Jacob was born Oct. 25, 1979, at Ft. Campbell, Ky. He later moved to Atkinson, where he graduated from West Holt High School in 1999. He attended Northeast Community College and was a police officer in Atkinson when he entered the Nebraska National Guard.

He began his basic training at Ft. Benning, Ga., in October 2001. He had special training in the Infantry and the Airborne. He served at Offutt Air Force Base with the Noble Eagle in 2003. In September 2006, he deployed with the 755th Chemical Reconnaissance Decontamination Company in the Iraqi Freedom Operation.

He married Lisa Crosby on Nov. 4, 2002, in Norfolk.

Jacob is survived by his wife, Lisa; children, Dylan, 4, Kirsten, 3, and Bryce, 19 months; his parents, Rod and Patty Schmuecker of Atkinson; four brothers, Joe Schmuecker and Chris Shepperd of Norfolk and Chad and Cameron Schmuecker of Atkinson ; three sisters, Nicole Tibbetts of Kansas City, Mo., and Rose and Eudora Shepperd of Somerset, Ky; and his grandparents, Ed and Gloria Schmuecker of Atkinson.

NORFOLK - Members of a controversial Kansas church that protest at the funerals of fallen soldiers have indicated they will be in Norfolk on Monday to picket at the service for Sergeant Jacob Schmuecker -- who was killed in Iraq last weekend. Westboro Baptist Church members believe the troop deaths are God's judgment against American for tolerating homosexuals. Norfolk Police Captain Steve Hecker tells "The X" he spoke with the church's attorney this morning to inform the church's attorney that protesters will be required to stay at least 300 feet away from the church and cemetery. He says they are planning to have extra manpower at the church on Monday -- not because of the Westboro protesters -- but more for crowd and traffic control. Hecker says seven to ten protesters from the Topeka church are expected to be in Norfolk on Monday.

Phelps and his minions have no shame.

1. Sorry for your town's loss.
And sorry that these sick individuals from Kansas feel the need to come and make a sad, somber event into a nightmare for the friends and family of Sgt. Schmuecker.

2. They came here to protest gay friendly policies at the University
Two guys, who later told the newspaper they barely knew each other, went into a protracted soul kiss right in front of them.

They couldn't leave fast enough!

Sometimes I love this town.

7. It is so great that they do this!
But they also follow Cindy Sheehan and other anti-war activists around and hassle them. I sure wish they would stick to Fred Phelps.

12. I have pictures on my other computer
They came to Crawford last year and tried to intimidate us. I also read their message boards fairly often. They definitely encourage violence on peace activists. We found death threats last year and reported them.

8. What would it take to make Phelps and his crew stop?
Edited on Mon Jul-30-07 11:02 AM by kestrel91316
Stoning all the gays, would be my guess. Has anybody ever actually asked him? We should get him on the public record about this.

continue to go after anyone different then them. They thrive on intimidation...hate and threats. They will cross the line one day.....

22. "The Line" is fifty miles BEHIND Phelps
If it weren't for the fact that Phelps is a (disbarred) lawyer, half his family are lawyers, and they are very good at winning lawsuits, someone would have wrung Fred's scrawny neck long before now.

25. Local police departments could stop acting as their free bodyguards everywhere they go...
I reckon that would be sufficient to make their activities
cease and desist within a very short period of time.

10. Update: The Patriot Guard Riders showed up at the church where the
funeral services were being held, the drowned out the cretins w/the Harley's, and they soon left.

At the cemetery, (I didn't go to the church services), there were no Westboro Baptists, but there were 80+ PGR's, and they asked me to stand w/them, which I felt was quite an honor.

Probably 300+ people showed up at the graveside services, and it went w/o a hitch. The widow looked distraught,a s did other family members, but that is to be expected.

Now it is time for Sgt. Jacob Steven Schmuecker to Rest In Peace. It is so sad he left so many behind, this should never have happened.

18. From the local Paper:
Rumble of motorcycles drowns out protesters

By KATELYN KERKHOVE

Monday, July 30, 2007

DARIN EPPERLY/DAILY NEWSJOINING MORE than 130 Patriot Guard Riders who lined the street leading up to Community Bible Church in Norfolk, Vietnam War veteran Ron Elge (right) drove from Aurora to pay his respects to the family of Sgt. Jacob Schmuecker, who was killed in Iraq on July 21.
Although hymns were to be part of Sgt. Jacob Schmuecker's funeral Monday morning in Norfolk, it was the sound of motorcycle engines that earlier provided comfort and support.

With 134 registered riders in attendance, the Patriot Guard served as an escort - and blockade of sorts - for Schmuecker's family at his funeral at Community Bible Church. The Norfolk member of the Nebraska National Guard died Saturday, July 21, in Balad, Iraq, from a roadside bomb.

The rumble of the motorcycle engines came into play because of the presence near the church of five protesters from Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kan.

The protesters sang loudly as they carried signs with slogans such as "God Hates Nebraska" and "Too Late to Pray," but the riders kept their engines rumbling to help muffle their yells.

One police officer said he also asked a small group of citizens to stay back from the protesters because he wanted to avoid trouble.

The protesters have an anti-homosexual agenda and make use of the funerals of military personnel to try to attract attention to their cause.

But their presence didn't detract from the solemnity of the scene as the band of riders stationed themselves along the street to the parking lot entrance with American flags. They stood unmoving as a soft breeze blew open their flags and the heat beat down on their black leather and denim for more than an hour prior to the funeral.

The leader of the guard, Dave Duensing of Clatonia, was more than pleased with the turnout.

"I'm amazed," he said. "I really didn't think we'd get this many, but it happens all the time. People always show up."

Ron Behnke of Norfolk, who is the commander of the newly formed American Legion Riders, said he was proud to have 40 legion representatives in the group as well as a 50-veteran color guard present for the funeral and burial.

"It's sad," Behnke said. "No one wants to lose a soldier. We are just proud to be here and pay our respects."

Bill Mizner, Norfolk police chief, helped direct traffic prior to the funeral, while Mayor Gordon Adams walked through the street of flags to the church.

19. My cousin had to move to a different part of Topeka because of them
Her house was three blocks away, but that became too close.

Sometimes a motorcycle group comes to help out (can't remember the name!!!). Did that happen here?

So sorry your community had to go through that!

like 80, but my estimate skills must be off, or the paper counted oddly.

I guess they really embolden the slithery slime
