7. That makes no sense. Academy time, afaik, didn't count towards an active duty obligation.

I attended the Coast Guard Academy 1961-63 and, instead of counting against my service obligation, it made me MORE 'attractive' to the draft board. In fact, I recall that was exactly what the scuttlebutt was - that draft boards were inclined to draft guys who attended but didn't graduate from the U.S. service academies. Maybe there was some special deal for enlisted men who obtained an appointment, but I sure don't recall it.
