13. as long as thats in his contract
he should do 9 weeks at Ft Benning, then off to Ft Gordon for the Signal Corps school.

Does he know where he will be assigned after that? If its not in his contract, it could be anywhere.

7. I think some of the Army's more high-tech schools are at Ft. Gordon,
also in GA. But I'm a Navy man. :)

3. Godspeed to him.
Before the Bush oil mafia seized our Nation, I advised young people to do a hitch in the military. Now I tell them to stay away - far away.

8. Tell him to remember that the 35 K is taxable income...
I got killed by an unexpected tax bill whey they paid off my college loan, but it sounds like his MOS could pay off well in the future...tell him to keep his head low, probably won't see combat in that MOS, but also tell him to be sure to pass his AIT for the MOS, or they'll stick him where they want to stick him...can you say 11B!

10. Ugh. Benning in August.
Hot, muggy, and did I say hot?

Everything he owns will become stained red from the clay in and around the Sandhill training area.

That being said, Benning is one of my favorite posts. When I was last there in 1995, they still had a kick-ass officer's club.

Edited on Mon Jul-30-07 07:47 PM by TahitiNut
(Yechh!) I did mine at Fort Lost-in-the-Woods ... bad enough.

All he'll see of the Officers Club is maybe some rocks along the road that get white-washed.

11. I feel bad for his kids
he has two beautiful children 3 and 1 and he got an emergency divorce

because he can't have custody and be divorced in the army, he only gets visitation but he will be gone over a year.

will be hard on all of us

14. Untrue
This is completely untrue:

"because he can't have custody and be divorced in the army"

I have MANY soldiers who are in that exact situation. They are required, however, to have and maintain a Family Care Plan under AR 600-20

17. he was misled then because his recruiter told him otherwise
so in his divorce, he signed away any custodial rights and has visitation.

but he will be gone for a long time, his one year old little girl will not even remember his I am afraid

I plan on being the BEST AUNT and getting them as often as I can

19. Caveat emptor
I am absolutely astounded at how many times I hear that "the recruiter lied" meme. Soldiers, entering upon their enlistments are ADULTS and should have the maturity to read the fine print before they sign.

I wish him all the best and I honor his service.

12. I feel your pain and fear...
my 18 yr old grandson took it upon himself to enlist without talking
to ANY family members - even the retired military members. He did this
less than 2 weeks ago and is waiting on medical paperwork to clear the
way (he was on Ritalin as a child - Military requires being off of it for
5 years before enlisting. It has been 7 for him).

Nothing any of us have said or shown him can dampen his enthusiam to go
and serve. He has always wanted to be in the Army since he was a child.

His last words to me about the subject were, "Quit trying to kill my dreams!".
To which I replied, "Your dreams may kill you."

He refuses to discuss it any more.

16. I'll send good thoughts his way that he will be safe and return home
to his loved ones undamaged.

Hopefully, we'll eventually get a Congress that will put an end to this nightmare we've endured under the Bush misadministration.

I appreciate his service, but we all know the war is based on lies. Still, that does not diminish his contribution to the country, he has left his friends and family behind to serve, and that makes him a very brave man.

Best wishes to you and your family.

22. Ft. Benning is for the infantry troops
Usually, Soldiers that work in communications go to basic at Ft. Jackson. Ft. Benning is the toughest basic training post in the Army. He'll be well trained and in great shape, that is for sure. If he remains state side for a year after basic, it's because the school he will attend is long.
