...he was considered the cutest guy in school ~ was a football AND basketball star and he led us to state championships on both teams. He was also smart and very nice. Now he is my congressman (just moved into his district from McDermott's who is also a really cool rep to have) and I am proud as hell he is my congressman! I was 2 years behind him and he did not know I existed but I marched in the band and was at every game.

Biography

Raised on the shores of Puget Sound, Jay Inslee comes from a long line of Washingtonians and wants to protect the state’s natural beauty for his three sons and generations to come.

He’s worked at the federal level – as representative for the 4th Congressional District from 1992-1994 and the 1st Congressional District since 1999 – to protect the environment of Washington state and address the problem of global warming.

He fought to restore protections for roadless areas in national forests and led a successful campaign in the House to keep limits on oil-tanker traffic in Puget Sound. Since 2005, Jay has used his seat on the powerful House Energy and Commerce Committee to promote his vision for a clean energy future, the New Apollo Energy Act, and to advance other legislation that would reduce greenhouse-gas emissions.

Beyond advocating sound environmental policies, Jay has used a common-sense approach in Congress to help expand the region’s high-tech economy, promote privacy protections for American consumers and strengthen programs for seniors like Social Security and Medicare.

Jay also has supported increased spending for port security and veterans’ services. He backed the war in Afghanistan to root out terrorists; but he voted against the war in Iraq and has been an outspoken critic of administration polities there.

Even before his election to the U.S. Congress, Jay was a public servant. He was a state legislator and prosecutor in Selah, Washington.

Jay holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Washington and earned his law degree from Willamette University. He’s been married to his high-school sweetheart, Trudi, since 1972. The couple has three grown children – Jack, Connor and Joe – who all live in Washington state.

51. U.S. Rep. from Washington State.
I had never heard of him, then one night I happened to turn on C-Span and Inslee was speaking. He absolutely transfixed me. Bright (steel-trap mind), articulate, a gentleman in dress and demeanor, forceful (balls + backbone) but quiet-spoken, no bullshit, and on top of everything else, good-looking and photogenic. Since then I've been following him with interest. For my money he's exactly the kind of young blood the Democrats should be grooming for senior public office. Frankly, Inslee impresses me infinitely more than any of the currently announced Democratic candidates for President. For whatever reasons, perhaps his choice, he has remained pretty much out of the media spotlight and in the background. Seems like that might be about to change bigtime.

"The First Congressional District of Washington encompasses a largely suburban area north and east of Seattle like Shoreline, Edmonds, Lynnwood, Mountlake Terrace, Bothell, Kirkland and Redmond, as well as Bainbridge Island and part of the Kitsap Peninsula. It is currently represented in the U.S. House of Representatives by Jay Inslee, a Democrat from Bainbridge Island. From 1993 to 1995, Inslee had represented Washington's Fourth District in the central part of the state."

15. Yes, the prospect of impeachment will shake everything up for Bu$hCo. They won't handle it well.
Alberto Gonzales has done more to aid and abet this criminal administration than anyone else.

Alberto's DOJ serves as the GOP's own corrupt police/legal force. He has done a heckuva job for Bush. And that is why Bush will never get rid of him.

It's up to We The People to do this job. And I'm betting on US.

26. Have these...
Looks for original article this morning where I saw that and couldn't find, but googled a few things and found:

http://www.commondreams.org/views/121800-105.htm

in which it says Gonzales worked as legal consultant to Halliburton and then later accepted campaign contributions from Halliburton. Same for Enron, which I'm still looking at...seems Enron was Gonzales's law firm biggest client.

http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/chronicle/archive/2002/02/15/BU132842.DTL

...and again Enron was one of his biggest donors for his 2000 judicial race. And....from dkospedia:

3. Gonzales is "inextricably tied" to Enron, casting doubt on his ability to impartially handle the biggest corporate fraud in history. As the described in the press even now:
Gonzales also has connections to scandal-ridden energy giant Enron. He is a former partner in the Houston law firm Vinson and Elkins, which represented Enron. He also received $6,500 in campaign contributions from the company when he ran for re-election to the Texas Supreme Court.

So I don't think Gonzales actually was an employee of these companies (although that's the way I read it) but was a consultant to them.

I think it is fair to say that he has close ties to these guys and worked closely WITH them and that Enron and Halliburton were significant supporters of his.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x386690

The only way he's going to be shown the door is if Congress makes him leave. The calls for his impeachment have been around for a long time - since the Franklin raids back in 2006, and even hard core GOP conservatives like Darrell Issa have called for his ouster. I've been pushing for this to happen for quite a while now - let's hope there's enough political will from DP to see this through to its proper conclusion.

Here's a link from the Nation talking about this over a year ago: http://www.thenation.com/blogs/thebeat?pid=87770

From NBC's Mike Viqueira
A group of House Democrats will introduce a resolution calling on the Judiciary Committee to begin impeachment proceedings against Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.

Rep. Jay Inslee (D-WA) will sponsor the measure. It will be dropped in the hopper tomorrow.

It's too early to say whether it will actually get anywhere.

Here's the text of resolution...

RESOLUTION
Directing the Committee on the Judiciary to investigate whether Alberto R. Gonzales, Attorney General of the United States, should be impeached for high crimes and
misdemeanors.
1 Resolved, That the Committee on the Judiciary shall
2 investigate fully whether sufficient grounds exist for the
3 House of Representatives to impeach Alberto R. Gonzales,
4 Attorney General of the United States, for high crimes
5 and misdemeanors.

55. Jay Inslee rocks the free world
I am sure there is someone here who doesn't care for him, but I'm telling you right now, he's the Real Deal. I don't even live in his district, and I can't count the times he's patiently answered the questions I've put to him. I don't ask easy questions, either. (I asked him about the CIA leak case almost three years ago, for instance.) If he can't answer on the spot, his staff member gets my info and contacts me later with the answer, and again, I live just outside of his district.

I think he's the greatest. To say that I am thrilled he's doing this is an understatement.

Julie

63. Leadership must be behind this
Edited on Mon Jul-30-07 08:19 PM by Truth2Tell
My take on Inslee, as a home stater, is that he would not be out on a limb on this. If I had to guess - I'd say this was a decision made by leadership and the opportunity to sponsor was given to Inslee.

He's a GREAT enviro and a good progressive on most issues. And yes, smart as a whip. But he's no Kucinich or Jim McDermott when it comes to backbone. He's not known to leave the reservation much.

And like much of the rest of the Washington delegation, he sometimes suffers from a bit of Scoop Jacksonism - coziness with the defense, security and empire industries.

But he's a very good guy overall and deserves all the kudos he gets on this.

Sen. Gordon Smith (R-OR): ouster "would be helpful"<66>

93. Just a bit of snark
Here in the DU, we seem to be on an emotional roller coaster, we get all giddy over this or that latest development then when it turns out to be less than what we hoped for we go back into the dumps again.

The news that my own state's Senator, Jay Inslee is, (has) presented legislation calling for impeachment of Gonzo is indeed great news but I suspect it may turn out again to have results less than what our expectations are.

I make light of the "giddiness" by suggesting something nonsensical here. Should Jon Conyers come out with the next thing to get us DUers all excited, I'll likely stick up a post: Conyers/Gore 08!

I suppose I could have used a real candidate instead of Gore but part of the subtlety here is that Al Gore can not become a VP again, (at least I think not.) So that's wtf...I am not ACTUALLY suggesting Senator Inslee needs to run for President in 08 with Al as his VP...just a bit of snark, nothing more.

btw: I encourage any who read this to call or e-mail their Congressmen and urge them to co-sponsor Senator Inslee's legislation. Perhaps this will indeed be the straw that breaks the camel's back. Who knows.

a real link to M$NBC...or was it just on a scroll?

I know, he was going to the podium to introduce it, but THEN he stopped, grabbed his cell phone and had Cindy arrested and so then there was no time left and they didn't have the votes and the guy who had the car pool this week was sick and only mean 'angry' people with no experience want to impeach Presidents, not PROPER Democrats....

91. Now reported in Seattle P/I & Seattle Times
Link: http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/local/6420ap_gonzales_democrats.html

White House spokesman Tony Fratto called the Democratic measure the "partisan attack of the day," and added: "Democrats are running through their list of partisan stunts - subpoenas, investigations, hearings, special prosecutors, contempt, no confidence votes to get headlines. Americans are tired of these partisan antics."

Inslee denied the move was a partisan stunt, and said he has long been critical of Gonzales, from the mass firing of U.S. attorneys - including Seattle-based John McKay - to the current controversy over surveillance programs.

"It's indefensible to allow the continued violation of American privacy, and it's indefensible to treat the truth with such cavalier disregard when talking to the American people and Congress," Inslee said. "So if the president won't do his job (and fire Gonzales) we'll do ours."

For a neo-fascist like Tony frat-boy Fratto, anytime the Congress tries to do the work of the people it is ipso facto a "partisan antic."
