Visualize Stevens and Roberts going down on the same day.

1. It could happen
There are some good Dems here contemplating a run against him next year.

3. No, that's not what happens at all.
A Republican governor would pick Stevens' replacement, and/or a special election would take place.

Neither of these events themselves would give us control of the Senate without Lieberman, until his (hopefully Dem) replacement is sworn in.

11. Not true
We closed that loophole after then Governor Murkowski appointed his daughter to fill his spot. We hold a special election.

12. So when would the special election be?
Not for some time after Stevens leaves office, I imagine.

20. So if it happens soon, we can kick out Lieberman.
If Stevens manages to hold on for a few months, no dice.

Is that an accurate reading of the statute?

His will be a different kind of issue.

5. well, the Roberts thing is a health issue
I'd never revel is somebody having harm done to them like that, but Stevens, and Don Young, are complete rats. If they get taken down because of corruption that's their own fault and they deserve it. If it makes Lieberman ineffectual the better, because that's what is best for our country and will save the lives and limbs of many of our soldiers etc.

13. See my post above. We have a special election.
AS 15.40.140. Condition and Time of Calling Special Election.
When a vacancy occurs in the office of United States senator or United States representative, the governor shall, by proclamation, call a special election to be held on a date not less than 60, nor more than 90, days after the date the vacancy occurs. However, if the vacancy occurs on a date that is less than 60 days before or is on or after the date of the primary election in the general election year during which a candidate to fill the office is regularly elected, the governor may not call a special election.

27. People aren't too happy with our Republican representation
Edited on Mon Jul-30-07 06:38 PM by Blue_In_AK
right now except for the Governor (with a 90% approval rating) ... who's more of an independent, anti-Republican-establishment Republican. We have FOUR current and former Republican state legislators under indictment (one has been convicted) at the present time, with more in the wings. Republicans are disgraced here in many ways.
