"A man who had fallen 5 to 10 feet hitting the back of his head....ashen, foaming at the mouth."
I thought this report about CJ Roberts should be posted separately. Kskiska found it in a Maine newspaper and posted it in one of the threads on the Roberts incident today. MSNBC is now reporting that Roberts is "fully recovered" after his seizure, but will spend the night in the hospital.

Maine Coast Now: Chief Justice Roberts taken to hospital after incident
Monday, July 30, 2007 6:45 PM EDT

HUPPER ISLAND — Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr., a seasonal resident of Hupper Island, located off Port Clyde, was taken to Penobscot Bay Medical Center in Rockport mid-day Monday.

St. George Ambulance responded to a call at about 2 p.m. Monday of a man who had fallen 5 to 10 feet and landed on a dock, hitting the back of his head. The patient was ashen and was foaming at the mouth. As of Monday afternoon, Penobscot Bay Medical Center would not confirm that Roberts was a patient.

National news report quotes a Supreme Court spokeswoman as saying that Roberts was conscious the entire time of the incident. That spokeswoman has not returned a telephone call to the newspaper.

Roberts and his wife, Jane Roberts, purchased their home on Hupper Island in June 2006. The island is located a few hundreds yards off Port Clyde and is only accessible by boat....

NOTE: It's possible, and probably valuable, to discuss this incident, and what could be its important implications, in terms that are not personal.

1. Holy fuck! He fell 5-10 ft and hit the back of his head?
Edited on Mon Jul-30-07 06:11 PM by originalpckelly
Um, yeah, that's not good. I doubt he's in as good condition as they're saying if he hit the back of his head.

8. I just cannot believe he doesn't have some type of skull fracture...
and that this seizure isn't really the result of a swelling subdural hematoma.

13. Given that he had a seizure back in (what, '93), I suppose it could be
falling as a result of a seizure. But like I said, I could see it either way. * And neither is good - falling that distance and hitting the back of your head can't be good for you.

*note: I'm not a medical professional. Nor do I play one on tv.

33. He could have hit his head without landing on it
A 5-10 foot fall broken by the back of your head's gonna mess you up pretty interestingly unless you're really lucky; if you, say, make a perfect three-point landing on both elbows and your left hip and hit your head as you finish the whole plummeting procedure, that's something else entirely.

2. Concious? Probably? Possibly not alert though.
My understanding of seizures is that the person can be disoriented for some time (minutes usually) after the seizure. I'm sure by the time he got on the boat, he probably regained his wits enough to be considered alert.

28. Yes... exactly!
This is from the same people who think that we are "making progress" in Iraq, regards the vice president's recklessness of nearly blowing his hunting buddy's face off as a "private traumatic mishap", and refers to Valarie Plame as a "CIA Secretary who was not covert". This is the Bush Co. where covering one's ass is the norm.

6. saw a similar thing a long time ago.
a friend jumped to catch a football pass and fell backwards on his head, only 6 to 8 ft up, he turned green, started shaking, and was in the hospital for about 3 months. He never was the same again.

9. The way to stop falls on the basis of seizures,
is to stop falling on the basis of seizures. :nopity:

The Constitution gives the nation's highest court the last word on racial discrimination, and Chief Justice Roberts delivers it: “The way to stop discrimination on the basis of race is to stop discriminating on the basis of race.”

10. A member of my family has a non life threatening brain aneurysm
When he has a seizure he foams at the mouth before he collapses. Not sure if this is what is going on with Roberts.

My family member was diagnosed when he was in his mid fifties. That was five years ago and he still works as a lawyer himself but the seizures happen a lot. And he usually spends a night in the hospital if it is a really bad seizure, and I apologize in advance for not really knowing what a 'really bad seizure' is, they all seem bad to me.

When the human genome finally is completely solved, will some people's employment prospects be diminished by what geneticists predict MIGHT happen to them in the future?

Edited on Mon Jul-30-07 06:24 PM by cynatnite
He was hit in the head by one of those heavy industrial winches. He didn't sieze until the next day. He continues to have grand mal siezures, but they are no where as bad as they were in the beginning. Right now the doctors are concerned with the brain damage this is causing over a long period of time.

Trying my VERY best not to make some tasteless comment about
what I think of a radical rightist foaming at the mouth.

mmmmmmprgzgrglssssssppphhhhhhmmmmmphhhhhhh..........

I WILL NOT go any further, I won't!

I wish him a speedy recovery---either to face perjury
charges for lying to Congress at his confirmation
hearings, or in retirement!

Don't come down on me too hard--had he been an ordinary
citizen without health insurance, he would STILL be out
there foaming at the mouth, and neither you nor I would
ever have heard about it.

29. When my wife heard MSNBC casually blow by the "foaming at the mouth" part...
...she immediately said "BULLSHIT he's fully recovered. He's had a grand mal seizure...no way in hell is he fully recovered!"

Communist China is alive and well in the United States...stick a board up his back, prop him up, paste his eyes open and pretend he's fine just long enough to rubber stamp all of Bush's crimes.

Remember...BushCo lied about the size of Bush's world record perch, for fuck's sake. Why does anyone think they'd tell the truth about THIS?

30. I'd like to hear from some med professionals on this incident.
I can tell you that my husband passed out several times when we were first married. He said it was no big deal and it used to happen every so often while he was growing up, and it was nothing to worry about. The first time it happened, it scared me to death!!!! That hasn't happened in over 40 years now. I don't even know the difference between passing out and a seizure.

Are there any Drs or RNs here to shed a little light on this?

32. I had a vasovagle sycope once...they truly are "nothing"
Edited on Mon Jul-30-07 11:18 PM by Atman
What Roberts had -- foaming at the mouth and all -- was NOT "nothing." This comes from my wife, the medical professional (APRN).

==========

What is Vasovagal Syncope?

Vasovagal syncope is not a serious or life threatening condition, but in effect an abnormal reflex. This results in a drop in blood pressure leading to decreased blood flow to the brain resulting in dizziness or fainting.

http://www.londoncardiac.ca/pages/vvs.htm

==========

Now Google "Grand Mal Seizure." This is what Roberts had.

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/grand-mal-seizure/DS00222

There's yet another cover-up going on at BushCo.
