Olbermann just made a mistake
Regarding Ingmar Bergman, he said "inexplicably, only 1982's Fanny & Alexander was even nominated as Best Foreign Film for the Oscars".

Bergman won 3 foreign film Oscars: Fanny & Alexander, The Virgin Spring, and Through a Glass Darkly.

And Fanny & Alexander was 1984, not 1982.

Remember LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL with Robert Begnini???
http://www.amazon.com/Life-Beautiful-Claudio-Alfonsi/dp/6305426651
An international sensation and the most successful foreign language film in U.S. history, the picture also earned director-cowriter-star Benigni Oscars for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Actor.......An inspired motion picture masterpiece, LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL was nominated for 7 Academy Awards(R) -- winning 3 Oscars, including one for Best Actor Robert Benigni.

14. no
foreign film is own entire category.

But he was also nominated 5 times for original screenplay, once for Best Picture, and 3 times for Best Director.

So he wasn't exactly snubbed by the academy.

37. Yes, it is, but my point was that foreign films can win in other categories, too
Like the example I posted elsewhere--Roberto Beginini in LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL--Seven nominations, three Oscars, including Best Foreign Film and Best Actor. And the examples you posted too.

They aren't always shuttled off to their own category exclusively.

Bergman won three Best Foreign Film oscars - I listed them in my OP.

And while the movie was made in '82, it won the Oscar in '84, which is the convention used when referring to oscar winners. But I'll give you that one.

The virgin spring: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0053976/awards
Through a Glass Darkly: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0055499/awards

26. Yup. You Were Half Right.
Definitely right about the 3 oscars, but still wrong about the year. The way KO said it, 1982's Fanny and Alexander, was actually perfectly appropriate in this context. So I'll give you half credit LOL

I am surprised he got the facts wrong like that though. That's kinda weird.

28. True, but does it matter what Oscar thinks?
What an American-centric statement anyway--to eulogize Bergman based on the number of Oscars he won. As if his cinematic importance were measured by that low standard. Bergman was recognized all over the world, at Cannes and in Venice, in the pages of Cahiers du Cinema, in books and articles.

Back in the early days, an Oscar for Best Foreign FIlm may have meant something (not just Bergman, but DeSica, Kurosawa, Fellini were winners for enduring films). For some years now, submissions are made by the countries themselves, and it is rare that the best films are put forward. Have we seen a best foreign film Oscar awarded to a Kiarostami, a von Trier, a Sokurov or a Tarkovski? Godard never won one. Fassbinder never won one. It doesn't make them lesser directors, and whether Bergman won one or three, it was not what was important about his career.

The American imprimatur on world culture means squat.

31. Oscars not the best
While the three Oscar winners are worthy, they say more about Bergman's status as a filmmaker for Americans in those years than they do about the inherent quality of the movies. Sawdust and Tinsel, Smiles of a Summer Night, Seventh Seal, Wild Strawberries, Persona, Shame, maybe The Silence, those are the pinnacles.
Cries and Whispers isn't bad either.
Ang Lee does a nice introduction for the Virgin Spring Criterion release.
And I forgive Keith.
