John Edwards: "Every time another radical Republican running for president speaks, ...

Edwards Responds To Romney's Attacks On Middle And Working Class Tax Relief
Jul 27, 2007 1:37 PM

Chapel Hill, North Carolina – Senator John Edwards released a statement today in response to Republican Mitt Romney's attacks on his tax cut proposal for middle and working class Americans. Yesterday, Edwards announced a plan to reform our tax code to reward work, not the privileges of the insiders, and help regular families get ahead.

"Every time another radical Republican running for president speaks, the American people are reminded of how out of touch with economic reality they are. Example A: Mitt Romney.

"Romney, who is worth hundreds of millions of dollars, should be ashamed for attacking my economic plan, but it's not surprising he is. I want to rewrite our tax code to make it fair and help hard-working Americans save some money to give them a better shot at the American Dream. Mitt wants to make sure that the wealthiest Americans just keep getting wealthier and let everyone else pick up the scraps. Mitt's all about more, more, more for the people who already have the most - and that's just wrong.

"The truth is Mitt Romney shouldn't pay lower taxes on the money he makes from his money than middle-class families pay on the money they make from hard work. Neither should I. We're both incredibly fortunate and we should pay our fair share.

"That's the big difference between people like Mitt Romney and me. Mitt Romney thinks he and his insider friends helped make America great, I think it's the hundreds of millions of Americans in the working class and middle class who make America great. It's these hard-working families who deserve a break and a chance to live the same American Dream as I have. That's what I'm fighting for, and that's what people like Mitt Romney have spent a lifetime fighting against."

4. Fighting the new "GIlded Age"
We've got a few who are taking on these corrupt bastards who are only serving the rich and powerful.

"Over a century later, America needs this kind of leadership more than ever. We need a President who sees government not as a tool to enrich well-connected friends and high-priced lobbyists, but as the defender of fairness and opportunity for every American. That’s what this country has always been about, and that’s the kind of President I intend to be.

We cannot settle for a second Gilded Age in America. But that’s what we’re seeing. We’re seeing a new economy where more wealth is in danger of falling into fewer hands; where the average CEO now earns more in one day than an average worker earns in an entire year; where Americans are struggling like never before to pay their medical bills, or their kids’ tuition, or high gas prices, all while the profits of the drug and insurance and oil industries have never been higher.

And once again, we are faced with a politics that makes all of this possible. In the last six years, our leaders have thrown open the doors of Congress and the White House to an army of Washington lobbyists who have turned our government into a game only they can afford to play – a game played on a field that’s no longer level, but rigged to always favor their own narrow agendas. Year after year after year, they stand in the way of our progress as a country. They stop us from addressing the issues that matter to people most."

17. Some may not know what the Gilded Age was. They may think it is
a time of great wealth for all, not just a few robber barons.

We are fighting some robber barons. Last year we had a question on our ballot. It was whether we should offer to buy the water company (which was for sale). The problem was, they didn't want to sell to us. Their political beliefs are hard right, corporate control, anti government. They put millions of dollars into fighting our grass roots effort. They (RWE a German company) won at the ballot box. They used an anti government campaign, saying our elected officials (by extension the citizens of our town) were to stupid, too corrupt to run our affairs. They claimed that if the city owned the water company rates would go up. A few days ago they requested a 26% rate increase.

They used our plan of condemnation (eminent domain) against us. They made condemnation a dirty word. Immediately after the election they proposed to condemn a corridor of private farms to make way for a pipeline.

Yep, we are being schooled in Gilded age capitalism.

3. God forbid any Democrat takes on the issue of class struggle directly.
No, simply sidestep the issue when possible, and when forced to talk about it, simply dance around the obvious. :sarcasm:

27. The words "Class struggle" push a lot of wrong buttons for people. I prefer
to characterize these issues as ones where "you and I and our kids don't get a fair shake." Or something along those lines. Once you make it their class struggle, too, they don't get all defensive.

12. Edwards is not only right... he is just warming up! Way to take Mittens down a notch...
Edwards has some excellent advisors who are helping him respond quickly to Repub attacks.

Put Edwards head-to-head with Romney and Edwards would eat his lunch.

Romney is a shill for the moneyed interests, nothing more. He will not do well in situations where he has to think and give a reasoned answer.

http://www.mittromney.com/News/In-The-News/Romney_Jabs_At_Top_Dem_Candidates

"Edwards proposed a rewriting of the U.S. tax code that he said would boost the middle class. The plan includes a plan to let families exempt $250 in investment income from taxes. Romney said he would not call the Edwards proposal a savings plan.

"'He has a special savings program,' Romney said to a crowd of more than 100 people Friday morning at the Madison County Historical Museum. 'I understand you can save $250 tax-free. ... That is not a savings plan in my view.'"

Mitt, if $250 in INCOME is tax free, that means you have saved $6,000 if you are getting 4% interest. The tax code used to be that way in the 1970s. The first $100 of interest and the first $100 of dividend income were tax free. Just a little loophole, but one that helped little people more than it helped rich people. I think Reagan must have done away with it. A couple already has the ability to put $8,000 in an IRA and deduct that amount from their income and also not pay taxes on the income from that investment. Of course that is a tax loophole that rich people are more likely to take advantage of. A couple making $35,000 a year is less likely to have $8,000 to save than a couple making $135,000 a year.

19. Every time a Republican speaks, a kitten dies.
That is a much easier and comprehensible way of saying it. I know cat lovers, and by saying this, again and again, Democrats might get enough votes to keep Bush from being elected for a third term. Which, at this point, seems entirely likely.

28. Good stuff. But we don't need 30yrs to eliminate poverty in US
Edited on Wed Aug-01-07 08:05 AM by kenzee13
Of those running, Edwards is at least talking about poverty - and kudos to him; he's my favorite of the current crop. But thirty years to eliminate poverty? I don't think so. Changes to the tax code, the Employee Free Choice Act, raising minimum wage and indexing it, creating a true safety net, affordable higher education, national health care, and a committment to full employment, whatever that takes, require only (yes, I know, "only"!) political will, not thirty years of ? what? what should take thirty years?

We have the tools, the know-how, and the money. Thirty years is too long.

edit to add in US
