Poll question: To those who run Windows Vista does your machine run faster than with XP?
If you run Windows Vista does your computer run faster than when you ran Windows XP?

1. I have a fairly new machine that had Vista pre-installed...
It's far better than the other machine with the XP. As much as I complain about Vista sometimes, it does run faster and it makes very little noise. The other machine sounds like a damn airplane landed in my bedroom.

In other words, I can't answer your poll. :)

2. but that's on a dual chip Macbook.
so I am not sure that is fair. In fact, I removed vista and went back to XP because of driver issues for printer, scanner, etc.

3. Just broke down and got an HP laptop with Vista
Wanted to find out what worked and didn't work before I had to start getting Vista on PCs at work. So far no major problems and seems as fast if not faster than XP. Only problem is a couple of legacy software apps we use at work that haven't yet gotten Vista ready.

4. I wouldn't upgrade from XP with it on an older machine, it's what I would put on a new PC.
Edited on Mon Jul-30-07 11:39 PM by Beelzebud
People that are upgrading to Vista from XP will see performance losses if their hardware is 2 years old.

If you have older hardware, stick with XP. If you are getting a brand new PC, get it with Vista.

Vista is a good OS when it's running on new PC's.

6. Thanks for that tip
Looking to replace an old computer and get another new one, both for work. Was a bit concerned with deciding about Vista. Some colleagues put it on their current machines and had complaints. Your observation is helpful since I am facing getting new machines anyway.

8. Its a good OS IMO, but its a resource hog
Get alteast 2 gigs of memory, its kinda slow with 1 gig which is what most new pc's have now. 2 gigs will really speed it up.

20. Just got an external hard drive to nurse old PC along until new one gets here
Then, transfer files, programs to new PC with LOTS of power? Thinking that would be the route to take.

Am I heading the right way?

I will use the external HD for backup/recovery if all goes according to plan.

5. Its faster if you have a dual processor, but if you don't it will take
longer to load apps.

7. Yep, and with Intel's new line, and price cuts on older duos, they're pretty affordable now.

10. I run a Pentium 4 2.8 gigahertz with 1.5 gigabytes of memory.
I'm not running a slow or an old machine.

Yes this poll goes to people who replaced XP with Vista on a relatively new machine they still run.

12. P4's are nothing compared to the new cpu's now.
My AMD 64 3400 is faster, but still nothing compared to the new cpu's like the Core 2 Duo lineup.

13. Ok, but Vista got referred to as something that would speed up an existing machine.
Apparently not.

14. You really don't want an answer
or rather you do

On this machine vista runs faster than on the older machine, but that is related to processor speed, memory and all of that...

On a machine with the same stats, vista runs slower... it is a memory hug and system hug

15. I do want answers. Most people so far say that Vista runs slower.
So Micro$oft has done nothing systemwise really to improve the speed of existing machines so far in this poll.

17. It is a system hog
On my new spanking machine it works, but this is a screamer. If it didn't run on this, we would have issues...

But here is what you do

You need a minimum of 2 gigs, preferably four

A good processor is a good idea, and if you can afford a top of the line vid card, it may be worth it

My question is, what are you going to use those machines for?
