The Detroit News: Gingrich calls Detroit a disaster, draws ire

Jennifer Mrozowski and Tony Gonzalez / The Detroit News

Former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich drew strong criticism from Detroit city leaders and school officials Monday after calling the city a "disaster" in a national network TV interview on Sunday.

Gingrich blasted the city of Detroit, Detroit Public Schools, the United Auto Workers and Michigan's unemployment rate during an interview on Fox News Sunday in which he talked about how he would transform Washington.

A spokesman for Gingrich, an undeclared Republican presidential candidate who has been ramping up his public appearances, singled out Detroit and its schools because they're the "best worst-case example" of bureaucracy and "a union structure that doesn't work."

"We should basically, fundamentally replace the Detroit school system with a series of experiments to see if they'll work," Gingrich said in the interview.

2. Isn't this so typical of the right?
Blaming unions and teachers - yeah, that's the ticket! :sarcasm: :eyes:

Instead of offering pratical, workable solutions to help keep Detroit economically strong and maintain an excellent quality of life, he hurls insults and brickbats. With individuals like Gingrich at the helm, is it little wonder the GOP is sinking?

4. I have a better idea.
Let's replace Noot with a series of experiments. They'll all fail. And throw him on the trash heap where he belongs.

6. Now that PICTURE ID is required to vote in Michigan....
....thanks to the rePukezoid SCOM (SCOM sounds like SCUM means "Supreme Court of Michigan") there will be a lot less voters in largely poor and predominantly black Detroit.

Just like Newty wants it.

7. series of experiments
You see you need a series because no matter how horrible a Republican idea fails, you need to keep trying over and over again. No amount of data will prove to them their idea is bad and not working.

10. Tell our contestant what he's won
For getting the answer so right (10 out of a possible 10), we have a set of luggage from Samsonite!

And isn't it odd that the Republican answer to certain things is to throw more money at it (growing income inequality and the return of the gilded age, so let's give billionaires more tax cuts), but the solution for other things (roads, schools, health care) is to starve them of funds in the hope that they'll magically transform into a working system.

12. Isn't that a sign of insanity? Doing the same thing over and over, and expecting different results?
Says a lot about the current state of the GOP, doesn't it?

8.  A fundamental replacement of the school system?
If that doesn't raise alarm bells, nothing should.

14. If there is a problem in Detroit or elsewhere in that region ....

it's because the rethuglicans and the BushCo regime sent all the jobs that were formerly there overseas. Six years of an oppressive regime is more than anyone can stand. The rethugs had total control of all branches of government for six years. There's no reason why we shouldn't be living in a Utopia by now. But thanks to the goppers' greed and ineptitude we now have to put the country's pieces back together again. I hope it's not too late.
