SIcko No More?
Today I am told by a mindless Bushotron...who mouths all their usual platitudes...that the Michael Moore' movie "Sicko" had such limited impact that it might as well not have been made. Now....I did point out to him that important issues had been brought to the fore...and discussions had begun...but...is the subject, now off the political landscape? Does anyone know if the movie was a box-office bust after the first week as he seems to think..or has been told by his oracle of truth...Pox Snooze?

Frankly....I expected an outpouring of emotion for the content and context.

Why are we no longer holding Bushco's, the Medical Industry and Insurance Companies feet to the fire?

They are usually liars and cowards who still live with Mommy.

What a surprise..another Bushbot who doesn't like Michael Moore movies, even though the toad has never actually seen any.

Maybe its like what MM said in his book "Stupid white men", that the culture war has been fought, and winners have won, and we the people have lost.

and we know it.

6. according to bushbots, Air America has been broke and off the air for years.
so much for their foresight.

Also:
We'll find tons and tons of WMD's
Our troops will be greeted with flowers and candy.
"It will take days or weeks, I doubt months"
Lower taxes for brazillionaires will eliminate the deficit

Have they ever been right about anything? We should all be excited by what your Bushbot said - it's a good sign that we'll have nationalized health care sooner than I thought. You should have thanked him for the news.

is doing well there in its 2nd month. And they are still showing it.

Not that the truth would probably matter to the person you're quoting.

Brilliant...

And..the earlier posts about the limited initial distribution makes sense. I trust that broader distribution and DVD release as posted earlier will give this subject its rightful spot in the discussion spectrum of how this government has failed the people.....

15. Really??
I have a right wing leaning family member is talking about the people she has been hanging with lately. Seems that medical insuance issues seems to be important conversations at this time. She is talking like it would impact the WHO a person voted for in a very red area.

Cause you see, Poor people out there very much need help with medical issues. They can't afford medical for themselfs or their loved ones. If a canidate came forward with a workable plan, they would vote for such a person. It wouldn't matter the 'party' that person came from.

she hasn't even seen sicko yet. But is aware that it's 'out there'. Would love to see it, but don't have the funds at this time. Even without seeing the movie, this IS an issue.

What this movie does is open up some more eyes. It shows WHAT is possible, for people have wanted it, but were clueless to how such a think would be workable. Now that they know it's possible, they want to demand it. Now that people know they have been "played" they are talking about it with others.

For my self, the movie brought out points that lately has encouraged me to bring up with others. STuff that I generally have forgotten, etc. Example, pointing out to a person who has been long term employed at a factory that is 'self insured." Pointing out that when the factory closes the doors, people are layed off or retired, that they will have a difficult time getting medical insurance. That their own medical history will make it difficult to become insured. News flash, he never thought about it before.

This movie makes an impact. Even to the ones who haven't seen it. People are talking about this issue. The idiot didn't realize it, but he was debating with you, because the movie DID make an impact. LOL!

17. Makes an impact?
You're not kidding....

I slammed Sanjay Gupta.....(who is less a doctor than he obviously is, a journalist) about the seriousness of the impact this movie made...at CNN.com. I was surprised that they even posted my comments.

Without a doubt...the movie makes indisputable points about the state of healthcare in this country. I watched every Michael Moore interview after that date and it was gratifying to note that they could not tear his premise down......

I was just less than gratified that this issue did not light some heavy duty flames of emotion after the initial brouhaha....

Wait till Michael Moore takes on the Pharmaceutical industry.....

19. No, it's doing pretty well for a non-blockbuster
It's chugging along, losing about 20% in box office per week (for comparison, Evan Almighty has been losing 40-55% each week).

It has a much longer "tail" than most movies, and is highly likely to continue to do so.

30. I believe that was Moore's intention
I think he intentionally made a slow build-up of showings in order to keep the movie in the public eye for much longer.

He didn't want the movie to be a 'flash in the pan' event.

37. The bushbot knows nothing about movies
http://www.boxofficemojo.com/genres/chart/?id=documentary.htm

Let's see the only 3 movies grossing more than "Sicko" are Farhenheit 9/11 (the only documentary to ever gross more than $100mil), a movie about penguins (which let's face it - everyone loves Penguins) and Al Gore's movie.

It's a fricking documentary. A successful documentary is if you can pull in $5mil whereas $10mil and you have a bonfide hit. Pulling in $20mil is like a Star Wars/Harry Potter/Spiderman blockbuster which would make Farhenheit 9/11 the Titanic of documentaries.

It's probably going to surpass Al Gore's movie and get another nomination for Roger Moore (if he chooses to go the best documentary route).

I don't see any pro-bush/pro-right wing agenda movies on that list

38. Actually, I agree with him.
I took a con friend to see Sicko (he agreed if I paid:eyes:, he bought dinner after). I wasn't nearly as impressed as I hoped I'd be, and he laughed everything off. The film contained spent way too much time on sob stories and not nearly enough on explaining the basic problems with market driven health care in general and the US hybrid system in particular.

40. LOL. That's part of it, but not the whole story.
He doesn't feel the gov will be effective at providing health care. He saw the movie due to 50% desire to argue and 50% me piquing his interest with discussions about market failure as it applies to the health care industry. I was hoping the film would go into that in more detail.

As to staying his friend, besides politics we get along fine, and every liberal should have a con friend to argue with. It helps keep your wits sharp.

42. I often find the "besides politics" comment interesting.
If this is an exculsively work-related relationship, then perhaps I can understand.

...but if you choose such a relationship, I say peace & patience be with you.

If you wish to argue any legit point in a Western-Style Single-Payer System versus US-Medical-Industry Scam...then have at it.

One last note: a "personal" world-view says everything about thier overall world-view. Look at those around you & think about that!!!
