D. C. Settles With Arrested Protesters for $1 Million

Washington - Thursday August 02, 2007 5:21 am

More than 120 people who were illegally arrested during a 2002 protest will receive a $1 million settlement from the city. It's the largest payout to date by the city for police actions during the September 2002 demonstrations against the World Bank and International Monetary Fund and the planned Iraq invasion.

U.S. District Court Judge Emmett Sullivan also ordered D.C. police to expunge any records of the arrests.

The city has also agreed to pay more than $640,000 to settle lawsuits filed by 14 others who said they were illegally rounded up by police.

A larger class-action lawsuit is pending, covering more than 400 people who say they were illegally arrested at Pershing Park.

2. Hmm, over $8,000 a piece for getting illegally arrested for a protest.
I think I'll join the next protest. Worse comes to worse, I can make some money.:sarcasm:
