5. I sincerely doubt
that my rep, Greg Walden, is going to support any impeachment bill. I've let him know where I stand anyway.

Does it do any good for Oregonians who aren't in their district to contact the Dem reps?

7. I suppose it's worth a shot to try and contact them...
The worst they could do is say no... and I suppose you're used to that having Walden for a rep. I'm sorry... I thought he would get voted out in the last election (I sent money to his opponent). Any good prospects running against him in '08?

8. Nobody yet. Act Blue says,
<snip>

If a progressive Democratic candidate is to stand a chance against the special interest supplied war chest at Greg Walden’s disposal, we must start now with our individual contributions. In 2006, Walden outspent his challenger $1.5 Million to $700 Thousand! It permitted him to run an absentee campaign, refusing to appear wherever he might have to answer for votes for the war and against the environment, education, children’s healthcare, and sustainable forestry and agricultural policies.

Blue Oregon hasn't got anything about opposition yet, although there are some rumors floating about him gearing up to run for governor in 2010.

There is a progressive presence east of the mountains, at least in the greater bend area, anyway. I've heard my own state rep, Ben Westlund, a recent defector from the republican party, suggested as a possible opponent for Gordon Smith.

10. Doesn't that District take in Ashland as well?
That's a pretty Progressive area.

I've also been wondering who will run against Gordon Smith. And though it's great to see a repub convert, do we really need another Lieberman in the Senate (DINO or Democrat on Fox Nes only)?

11. I've been wondering about Smith, as well.
There may be enough Democrats state wide that you don't need moderate repub votes to win the senate; if so, I'd prefer a more liberal candidate.

While I've heard local rumors (I live in his district) about challenging Smith, that's not what Westlund is discussing. After a visit to his website, I see that he is considering a run for State Treasurer.

I'd like to see how his evolution progresses before making up my mind.

Walden's district is massive; it covers most of Oregon, including Bend and Ashland. Of course, central and eastern oregon doesn't have the population numbers that towns and cities west of the mountains do. Still, Ashland and Bend don't outnumber, at this point, all of rural ranching republicans.

13. Medford, Ashland and Bend....
Hood River too. Those places seem to be getting more blue by the day.

Did you notice that the map has Ashland and Medford switched?

14. Not until you pointed it out, lol.
I think this area is in a transitional state right now. I meet plenty of people who are horrified by GWB and his administration. Many of them are republicans, and some of them sing Greg Walden's praises. They are angry at the direction their party has taken the country, but still distrustful and disdainful enough of "liberals" to not want to vote for a Democrat. I wondered if Westlund might be able to swing those votes, but many of them see him as a traitor. He may be planning a state wide run because he doesn't think he'll be reelected in his district.

Voisin had a good message, but couldn't win enough of those voters. I'm not sure what the best recipe is, other than to hope that even more of the red voters are willing to hold their nose and hop over in '08.

We need a democrat who would visibly, and vigorously, support rural people and rural viewpoints. Someone who all those voters would see as "one of us."
