For those in the twin cities: What is the other bridge that runs
parallel to the one that fell? It looks much newer.

Also, I'm so sorry for what you are going through there...I know I speak for many here, you have our thoughts and prayers:grouphug:

3. The Cedar Ave. Bridge runs parallel to 35W
Edited on Thu Aug-02-07 09:49 AM by Fighting Irish
It runs from downtown into the neighborhood to the northwest of the U of M. Not very good for thru traffic, unless you like stop lights. The street ends a few blocks north. With a few turns down side streets, it does connect with Central Ave., which is a big thru street. Central Ave. does have its own bridge as well.

Needless to say, knowing the area from living there for a decade and a half, traffic is going to be brutal in Minneapolis for the next few years. The Lowry Tunnel complex was pretty chaotic before this.

SR280 is an old expressway a few miles east, and is the designated detour route. But there's no way it can handle the traffic that traversed 35W. And it's a pretty tight squeeze, with four lanes and really tight ramps. I-94 to I-694 is going to be nuts, but at least that stretch has recently been upgraded, IIRC.

Too bad the light rail lines don't go north.

6. Luckily I don't live there anymore
I do have family there, but they rarely go anywhere near the bridge. They emailed last night to say they were fine.
