Isn't it about time we started to attack the military... |
|
and its huge budget?
In ten years the military budget has just about doubled in constant dollars, to around $650 billion, and this is just the on-budget stuff which doesn't count black ops in Columbia or the rest of the CIA, ECHELON and other spying, bribes to other nations for bases or access and other reltaed "diplomatic" expenses, more money thrown down the hole with the various iterations of PATRIOT... Big bucks we're spending on "security" and we're not very secure while the rest of the country is heading for the shitter.
Around half our taxes are paying for the Pentagon, and far more is coming due as we borrow to cover expenses. And we haven't started to pay for those grand schemes like checking cargo containers for imaginary bombs.
But, although this beast has been feeding since it was started back in WWII, it has shown absolutely no positive results. Nada, nothing.
Gulf I and Bosnia might arguably have been useful, but if you take all the money we spent since Korea (probably the last "just" war) those two are some pretty small payback and sure don't make up for Viet Nma and this cockup in Iraq. It might be noted that we started WWII with a small cadre of a few hundred thousand and managed to whup both Japanese and German ass in a fairly short time. A lot less time than it's taking to find the world's tallest Arab hooked up to a dialysis machine.
Nope, just money pissed down a hole making bigger weapons to fight an enemy that exists only in a fantasy to keep us making more weapons.

1. Wont be able to do that for a while...even if we seriously downsize the DoD, there is a huge amount |
