AAR's "The Air Americans" to be cancelled next month
Edited on Thu Aug-02-07 11:59 AM by CaseyBuck
According to FightingIrish's http://ltradio.blogspot.com/2007/08/air-americans-are-grounded.html">Liberal Talk Radio blog and http://talkingradio.blogspot.com/2007/08/air-americans-to-be-grounded-in.html#links">Talking Radio, Air America Radio will be cancelling Mark Riley's 8 PM-midnight Eastern show, The Air Americans in September.

There will be two new shows beginning September 4th; Richard Greene (who hosts Clout on the weekends) will move to 8 PM-10 PM Eastern, and KTLK's Bree Walker will join AAR from 10 PM-midnight Eastern.

To me, it sounds like Mark Riley couldn't compete very well against Nova M Radio's Mike Malloy, who has a similar timeslot.

3. Some more thoughts:
I don't know why AAR keeps insisting on having a 24/7 network schedule. They would do much better financially by selectively syndicating only their best shows (Randi, Thom, and Rachel).

Whoever takes over that late evening slot is going to have an uphill battle against Malloy, who is gaining back a lot of the stations he used to have with Air America, and has a dedicated following amongst listeners.

Also, on the Talking Radio site, the much ballyhooed Lionel isn't doing very well in terms of affiliate clearances. He had about 80 or 90 stations on his old WOR show, and now only has about a dozen or so with Air America.

7. Did you see this article on the blog?
Hopefully, they're right.

http://talkingradio.blogspot.com/2007/07/has-lib-talk-stopped-bleeding.html

Lib talk was on a roll. When KPTR/1340 flipped to lib talk on August 7, 2006 these stations were reaching more than 85 million potential radio listeners. From the introduction of Air America Radio in April, 2004 each month an average of 3.7 new stations switched to the lib talk format.

However, from that day onward, it has been all down hill for the format. In the past ten months 24 radio stations reaching 16 million potential radio listeners dropped lib talk. This represented an 18.8% decline in coverage. Most of the stations dropping lib talk offered weak signals and poor coverage.

The strange thing is that the vast majority of these stations have experienced a decline in ratings since flipping. So, it is with some optimism that we report the first new station to add lib talk in over ten months. Two weeks ago, KTAA/1490 went on the air with a format featuring mostly AAR talk hosts. It is the first of a rumored six or seven new stations that may be launching lib talk in the next few weeks.

June is the first month since last September where the format did not lose ground. (The gain in Atlantic City was offset by the loss of AAR affiliate WLVP/870 in Portland, ME.)

6. I had a feeling they were keeping the seat warm for someone else.
Hopefully, this means that New York station will get rid of their rebroadcast of Sammy and Army.

8. I HATE WWRL!!!! I only listen to it when I can't be at my computer.
The signal sucks, their non-AAR programming sucks, and what's up with their weekend schedule - their Sunday programming is mostly infomercials.
