Senate passes ethics bill, 83-14.
http://thinkprogress.org/2007/08/02/senate-passes-ethics-bill/

Senate passes ethics bill.

In an 83 to 14 vote, the Senate today joined the House and passed legislation requiring that “lawmakers disclose more about their efforts to fund pet projects and raise money from lobbyists, a move some called the biggest advance in congressional ethics in decades.” One of the senators who voted against the bill was Sen. Ted Stevens (R-AK), whose “home was searched this week by federal agents probing alleged influence-peddling involving earmarks.”

10. That'd be so kickass if it happened!
And it looks like they definitely have the votes to do it, too.

18. Then the chimp will just render the veto override moot via signing statement
Edited on Thu Aug-02-07 03:10 PM by Ghost in the Machine
That's why I advocate impeachment so much before any other business in Congress. Just like wasting time passing resolutions to end the war.. they'll get vetoed with a quickness. If anything passes with veto proof majority, he'll just issue a signing statement and ignore it anyways...

edited: for spelling...

2. So, has Bush declared that he'll veto it?
Edited on Thu Aug-02-07 02:40 PM by Snicker-snack
EDIT: Well, I guess he will anyways so it doesn't matter when he does it.

4. Hopefully vetoing it will make people hate him even more.
Edited on Thu Aug-02-07 02:45 PM by Snicker-snack
But something tells me people won't care.

The media won't cover it. And if they do, they'll just paint it as empty partisan posturing that's doing nothing but attacking the Nazis or something like that.

I may be dreaming but I want to see Bush's approval ratings completely DIE after this. That smarmy, disgusting rat bastard is blaming Democrats for the bridge collapse, vetoing the children's health care bill and is now gonna veto this.

5. But I'd love to see the media get out of reporting this one!
If the media doesn't take the Repubs to task for this, then they will all be exposed as the tools that they are.

9. If the bill passed 83-14, it won't make much difference
That is what one calls a "veto-proof majority."

6. Good deal
This Congress actually has a respectable record so far on keeping it's campaign promises--so far. Although I have always said that campaign promises should not be treated like a scorecard and used as the only barometer of a politician's performance in office.

The minimum wage increase is now law.

The stem cell research bill was passed, but vetoed--take it up with the White House if you aren't happy about that.

Ethics reform is now about to become law.

The 9/11 Commission recommendations are also about to become law.

Again, I didn't say their record is stellar. It's not, as they gave Bush his war money, but some stuff is getting done.

20. All Republicans
The party of free enterprise believes that a congress should be able to sell himself to any one who meets his price, just like an common prostitute.

Who would have thought that Republicans are against tougher ethics rules???

22. Unfuckingbelievable!!!
I am so ashamed that both of my Senators (Lott and Cochran) voted against this. But then again, I'm not suprised. I apologize to the rest of you all for these two worthless assholes, and am embarassed and ashamed for this redneck, backwards state I live in.
