A gardener's take on democracy, rule of law and impeachment
Edited on Thu Aug-02-07 07:38 PM by whosinpower
I have a lovely garden that I and my family enjoy each and every summer. My mother(who lives with us) does most of the gardening chores. She loves to do this - be outside, putter around in the backyard.

Our little garden is lovely to look at, and its bounty very enjoyable to see, smell and eat. But it is hard work too. Every gardener has to be on the lookout for pests, weeds. And every gardener has to work hard to keep it all trimmed, neat, watered, fertilized and worked.

A person could compare a democracy in a similiar manner. A democracy is lovely to look at, behold its symbiotic nature with its inhabitants, and enjoy its bounty of freedom, fairplay and a rule of law. But it's hard work too. There are those who would undermine the very best of democracy to benefit the few, at the expense of the many......just like in a garden - where weeds would quickly overtake the hard efforts of seeds lovingly and carefully planted in hopes of a harvest.

A wise gardener would implement the necessary tools to get rid of those weeds - those nutrient/water thieves. You could ignore those weeds and water more, and fertilize more and somehow think that the seeds you planted would overtake the weeds....however, a wise gardener would simply pluck them out, before they got so big, unruly that they overtook your vision of how you wanted your garden to be. Weeds don't play by your rules. They are constant opportunists who will rob your plants, steal your sunlight, and suck your soil dry.

A wise politician should recognize that no matter how hard you try to ignore those who undermine your democracy, and, instead just try improve your democracy from the edges....a wise politician would know that those who ignore the rule of law need to be plucked out of the system - for they are poisoning democracy itself. They don't play by the rules. Impeachment is a difficult process - but necessary for the vision of America to be what it should be - a vision confirmed of freedom, fairplay and most importantly - rule of law. You can't ignore those who break those laws in hopes that your efforts will be good enough. It will not. The more you ignore their lawlessness - the bolder they get.....and very soon - before you know it, you no longer have a democracy at all.
George Bush sent America to war over lies, innuendo and misstatements. It was all a lie. That isn't just a mistake - it is treason. No matter how embarrassing, appalling it may look - the only way forward is accountability. That is ultimately what rule of law means - accountability. Disregard this, and you are no longer a nation of laws, you are no longer a democracy, and this is no longer America.

2. Gardeners also know that things happen in season. Plant and harvest in the right
seasons, and in the right place, or your efforts are futile.

I'm not sure what you mean by use it - but if you mean to take the analogy and write it in a more fitting manner - then by all means....go for it!
