Next week, a federally appointed panel of scientists is scheduled to finish its evaluation on the health risks of an industrial chemical, widely used in baby bottles, food cans and other consumer products, that many researchers believe poses risks to human reproduction and development.

But in a news briefing Thursday, a separate group of university and government scientists said they have reached their own conclusion – that there is ample reason to fear that the chemical is, in fact, causing adverse human health effects – including possible abnormal development of reproductive organs and predisposition to cancer.

The chemical in question, bisphenol A (BPA), the basic building block of polycarbonate plastic, also mimics the female hormone estrogen. An estimated 95 percent of Americans have it flowing through their bodies – and Texas is a major producer of the chemical.

Industry representatives insist that BPA, in its current use, does not pose a risk to human health. But experiments on lab rodents within the last decade have found that BPA decreases fertility in both sexes after adult exposure. It can also cause reproductive and behavioral problems when developing males and females are exposed to low doses in the womb.

1. 287 contaminants in umbilical blood
Unborn U.S. babies are soaking in a stew of chemicals, including mercury, gasoline byproducts and pesticides, according to a report released Thursday.

Although the effects on the babies are not clear, the survey prompted several members of Congress to press for legislation that would strengthen controls on chemicals in the environment.

The report by the Environmental Working Group is based on tests of 10 samples of umbilical-cord blood taken by the American Red Cross. They found an average of 287 contaminants in the blood, including mercury, fire retardants, pesticides and the Teflon chemical PFOA.

“These 10 newborn babies ... were born polluted,” said New York Rep. Louise Slaughter, who spoke a news conference about the findings Thursday.

2. And we worry that kids are developing autism from vaccinations
I'm not ready to say yeah or nay to that because I have read some compelling evidence, but I think there are other factors that could be contributing as well.

3. When I weaned my kids and gave them bottles, I used good ole glass evenflo bottles
only one mishap, when my oldest tossed his through his bedroom window :)

I never trusted plastic bottles..they never smelled clean..no matter how much I washed them.. I sold them at a garage sale and used the glass ones:)

but then I was a luddite.. we also used cloth cotton diapers :)

but maybe not.. they are probably all plastic now :(

If I was just starting out as a Mom, I would definitely breastfeed ...as long as possible..

My youngest was the only one who nursed a long time, and he never even ate food until he was about 9 months old..

and even then, I just used a food processor and made my own babyfood..

edit.. yep..evenflo still makes them

6. There was nothing like sterilizing the glass bottles
and KNOWING they were clean. I never felt that confident with the plastic ones.
And they last forever.
Our lazy need for a disposable society is what is going to be the death of us.
Everything is in plastic when truly it TASTED better in glass...and glass is recyclable.
I just don't understand why we don't go back to it?

20+ years ago it went in cycles about sterilization...personally I just put them through the dishwasher. That was MY definition of sterilization.:)

7. this shit is also in pacifiers, plastic toys that kids put in
their mouths, etc. Ad nauseum. I believe that it is widely talked about in Silent Spring and Our Stolen Future. (I haven't read either yet, but have seen excerpts)

13. Deregulation is going to kill us!DUH!
Every regulation that has been in place was a reaction to something bad that was being done by companies to increase profit. How anyone who eats, takes medicine, breathes air and drinks water could be for unfettered deregulation is beyond me.
