LTTE: "Vitter should step down, get his life in order, and let me cockfight."
If you told me this letter was written on Mars, I would not be any more surprised.

======
To the editor: (Daily Advertiser - Lafayette, LA)

I am a Christian (but a sinner), a disabled Vietnam veteran and a Louisianian first. As for Sen. Vitter, I forgive him and ask everyone else to do the same and pray for him and his family. I admire his wife for sticking by him, trying to work this out and keep their family whole.

I fought roosters all my life, and now he and the rest of the holier-than-thou finger-pointers want to stop it. Shame on the rock throwers - Vitter and the rest of them.

I've been married to the same lady for 30 years and never cheated on her. I forgive Vitter but don't want someone like him representing my family, friends or me. He should step down and get his life in order.

And that goes for the rest of the rock throwers. These hypocrites sit in their big homes and in their churches, while there are areas in our state and in this city that are just reeking with poverty, suffering and things much worse then the cruelty of cockfighting. These so-said Christians should be ashamed of themselves for calling themselves Christians.

Please don't judge others because of something you don't like or don't understand. Louisiana politicians, you should be ashamed of blaming cockfighting for the mess you have made in this state.

Isn't this about gambling money and not animal rights?

God bless this great country of ours and Louisiana. Stop judging. Live and let live.

GLENN STROUD

LAFAYETTE

4. Having been raised in the backwoods, I can understand where
this writer is coming from.
Most of the roads I had occasion to travel over, as a kid, were mud. A lot of them still are.
Because the roads were narrow, deeply rutted, rocky in many places, with switchbacks and closed in with overhanging trees, they were very difficult to navigate eight or nine months of the year and rarely did law enforcement show up there. (Once, I think, when they were chasing a fugitive.)

Half a mile to a mile off that "main" road, on an even worse road-referred to as a "haul road," there were pits dug into the ground or the road bank, usually one but sometimes more. Even though rooster fighting had been declared illegal in West Virginia for some time, the old pits still remained.

There are many "good ole boys" who are pretty rough; the kind that will get up early and kill a brace of squirrels, bring 'em home and clean them and have fried squirrel for breakfast--without washing hands once. A bit like the Romans-with their gory entertainment, scaled back to fit circumstances-these guys really resent the meddling in their affairs, rightly so by their lights.

"Buncha dam city slicker libruls come bustin' in hyere, tellin me how ta live mah life an mah famly been here fer two hunnert years!"

Like virtually everyone else, they just want to live their lives their way, with the added desire to take things back to what they were in the first half of the twentieth century. A common attitude, after a bit of cussing, maybe, translated by a long spit that said-"they hate themselves but are doing their damnedest to make everybody just like they are."

5. Hence my Mars comment
It's just so different from everything I know. I would say you him "no, YOU don't fight roosters, you make THEM fight." Outside of that bit of animal cruelty, his stock is American as mine. And we both want Vitter to step down, for different reasons :)

7. In the end it all comes back to cockfighting???
How bizarre.

I've seen some pretty strange things in places around the globe and heard some bizarre justifications for doin them, but this guy probably takes the prize.

8. Vitter's Democratic opponent, Chris John, supported cock fighting
I'll add that little bit in there just so I can make it a little more complicated. Chris John also represented Lafayette when he was in Congress.

9. The GOPers want to make love not war with chickens!
Most GOPer Do Gooders are in the Prevert category, when it comes to poultry in motion...

War...somewhere to send poor people's kids, to boost the economy

Piece...the chicken coop after dark

Pervert...uses a feather

Prevert...uses the entire chicken
