Cheney's role in Klamath fish kill

<snip>
The inspector general's testimony corroborated a June Washington Post report that charged Vice President Dick Cheney intervened directly to stop the Interior Department from releasing enough water for the salmon.

Cheney, according to the Post, first tried to find a way around the Endangered Species Act (which dictated the salmon flows) and, when that failed, decided to find some different science. The result of his efforts was a new biological opinion that contradicted the exhaustive research already conducted by federal biologists. The new opinion established a 10-year water plan that three years later prompted the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals to observe that, under the plan, fish would not get enough water to survive until year nine. At that point, the court's 2005 opinion said, "all the water in the world" won't save the fish because "there will be none to protect."

Cheney's intervention, according to the Post, was inspired by the fact that the state of Oregon went to Democrats in the 2000 election by less than half of 1 percent, and the Klamath Basin farmers were an important political constituency the Republicans didn't want to lose.

After Tuesday's hearing, Rep. Thompson didn't mince words when he addressed Cheney's alleged role in the salmon disaster. "Today's hearing is clear evidence that the scientific process behind the water diversion was purposely manipulated by government officials," he said. "Sidestepping this process led to an illegal water plan that contributed to the largest adult salmon kill in the West."

2. Klamath...again?
I've been looking for a history of the farmers and how they got there. It seems to me I remember a homestead act or something. In any case, it's a very dry area, and the demands of the farmers in the area have always been a factor. Water has been diverted to appease them many times.

I am reminded of William Kittredge...

4. From what I understand, these farmers aren't even brilliant about the
crops they pick to grow. It seems a smart one would select a crop that requires little water, but they have done just the opposite.

3. There's a pattern here. Dick Cheney is doctoring up facts to get what he
wants. He did this with the CIA office and going into Iraq, the fish kill and what else?

Why isn't that man behind bars?
