I think it's OK to change your position over time, particularly when situations change, time passes, etc.
I think I can best explain what the PROBLEM is with politicians if I were to explain what I'd WANT a politician to DO.
On any given issue which required attention - I'd do some RESEARCH. I check up on things, not from any one source, or two "opposing" sources. I wouldn't try to apply some "ideology" to the problem - thinking that somehow some old words can best solve a current problem, starting with, "Is this a problem"?
I'd take my time, if things weren't URGENT, and I'd ask people, read books, magazines, etc. I'd try to figure out who was being honest, factual, and I'd try to figure out who had a vested interest in their prescriptions. I'd try to figure out the long term effects, costs and benefits of each alternative, and I would give NO WEIGHT to how it effects one industry over another, rather, I would understand that my position was to be the PEOPLE'S representative, and that, given that the economy is weighted toward the most wealthy, it was my job to represent the most people, and not the most wealthy.
LASTLY, FINALLY, AND IF OFFERED NO CONFLICT to what I found in the above process, I'd consider the political aspect.
THEN - I'd take a stand, and let people know what I wanted to do, and why, and then ask them to vote for me if that's what they wanted to do too...
THE FUCKING PROBLEM WITH OUR WORLD IS THAT THIS ENTIRE PROCESS IS REGULARLY DONE COMPLETELY REVERSE OF THIS...
That's the problem with politicians...
