Hey DU, Greg Palast Investigations Needs some Funds!
Edited on Fri Aug-03-07 12:32 PM by Melissa G

In another DU thread I heard the Greg Palast Investigative Team was Dead Broke
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x1485291

Thanks to Skinner for approving this DU fund drive!

As far as I can see this is the best investment I can make of my 50.08 cents to try to prevent and expose Election Fraud. (.08 is so maybe we can track our progress!)

The Greg Palast Investigative Team has a proven track record of delivering the goods.
http://www.palastinvestigativefund.org/
They give cools gifts, but I'd rather they just kept the money to do more great work, so I said no gift please.

Here are some of the important stories the Greg Palast team has done...

New Florida vote scandal feared

By Greg Palast
Reporting for Newsnight

A secret document obtained from inside Bush campaign headquarters in Florida suggests a plan - possibly in violation of US law - to disrupt voting in the state's African-American voting districts, a BBC Newsnight investigation reveals.

DU thread on Conyers taking action on a Palast investigation

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=203&topic_id=473184

“What does a multi-award winning reporting investigator do when he has a huge story to break? If it’s Greg Palast, one of America’s foremost journalists, he goes to England! Greg Palast has repeatedly scooped the U.S. networks, and newspaper elites, reporting for London’s Guardian newspaper, and BBC television’s current affairs flagship program, Newsnight. He’s reported on the truth behind George W. Bush’s theft of the 2000 presidential election, the attempted theft of Venezuelan democracy, the World Bank’s willful destruction of Argentina, Enron’s looting of California, and the cozy relationship between the Bush and Bin Laden dynasties. The problem is: The men behind the curtain of America’s media don’t want you to know about these, or any of the other stories he has to tell. Undeterred by the sucking vacuum of America’s mainstream media, Greg put together a few of his greatest journalistic hits in the book, “The Best Democracy Money Can Buy: the Truth About Corporate Cons, Globalization, and High-Finance Fraudsters.” Ironically, the stories the New York Times didn’t find fit to print have become a New York Times best-seller. Now Greg Palast is releasing a DVD, “Bush Family Fortunes,” based on “The Best Democracy Money Can Buy,” and featuring some of his reports from Britain.” - Chris Cook, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation

Here is what some folks think about Greg Palast...

“Greg Palast is one of my heroes. The last investigative reporter in America. In Armed Madhouse he has the best inside story of the war inside the White House over the war in Iraq, the battle between the neo-cons and Big Oil.” -Robert F Kennedy Jr. -Air America Radio

“Twisted and maniacal” -Katherine Harris

“We hate that sonuvabitch.” -The White House

“Doggedly independent, undaunted by power. His stories bite, they’re so relevant they threaten to alter history” -Chicago Tribune

“Greg Palast is investigative journalism at its best. No one has exposed more truth about the Bush Cartel and lived to tell the story.” - Baltimore Chronicle

The Chicago Reader asks about Greg Palast, “Can one reporter change the entire political discourse of the nation?”

In Britain he’s called, “The most important investigative reporter of our time.” -Tribune
After exposing on BBC TV the contents of a stack of documents from inside The World Bank and the World Trade Organization, the WTO called his report, “Rubbish rubbish rubbish,” and CNN reported, “The World Bank hates Greg Palast” for stories the Wall Street Journal’s Jude Wanniski called, “Extraordinary reporting on the IMF,” and Nobel Laureate Joesph Stiglitz called, “Excellent on the WTO.”

“The information is a hand grenade.” - John Pilger, New Statesman

So let's dig deep DU and see what we can shake out of our couches and piggy banks to get some funds to the Greg Palast Investigative Team who has done so much for us! Let's add .08 to our contributions so they know it came from DU! Maybe you only have 5.08 or 10.08 but whatever you can send, I am sure would be welcome! :toast:  Please vote this thread up for greater visibility! Thanks DU! :yourock:

I'm going to be tied up later this afternoon and a lot of this evening. If you folks who have a chance will keep kicking this thread, whether you have bucks or not, you will help getting good energy and probably money to Greg Palast and company! Thanks, progressoid!

raising funds. As you can see from this link, Greg is not taking a penny. All the money that DU provides goes into investigation by the team.http://www.gregpalast.com/busted-crimes-of-the-times

from the link...

I do not take one dime of pay from the Fund. 100% of your donation goes to our investigators, cameramen and women, operating costs and equipment. Yes, we get fees from BBC, Vanity Fair and Harper’s but that doesn’t cover the bills. Not even close.

If we can get your support, we can follow-up on our investigation of The Scheme to Swipe 2008. We’re finding that ‘caging’ is the tip of the fraud-berg. With your help, we can also take on the Vultures, the bond speculators who are preying on Africa’s poorest.

snip- more from the link

We’ve made it in another way: Friday was also the day I was informed that the Palast Investigative Fund was dead broke, technically bankrupt, with way less than zero in the account.

Bluntly: if we don’t get some help, and fast, we’re sunk. We are throwing staff overboard and halting some operations while we seek funds to keep afloat.

I’m pleading with you to do three things:

1. Watch PBS ‘NOW’ on voter ‘caging’. Then, if you think our work is important…
2. Donate at least $100 (tax deductible) to the Palast Investigative Fund. With heartfelt gratitude, I’ll send you a personalized, signed copy of Armed Madhouse (hardbound or paperback, your choice), or the DVD “Big Easy to Big Empty,” the untold story of the drowning of New Orleans.

(For $250, I’ll sign and send a whole BOX of Raw Journalism: 2 books: Armed Madhouse and Impeach the President, 2 DVDs: Big Easy to Big Empty and American Blackout, the Audio Book Armed Madhouse and the Spoken Word CD Live from the Armed Madhouse). Or simply make an open no-gift donation for a sum of your choice. (All options and many other signed items can be found at the Palast Investigative Fund Homepage.)

3. Pass on this note, post it and make certain your group and friends sign on to GregPalast.com, read our work, and support it.

Please DU, do whatever you can. We need this investigation to happen!: thumbsup:

8. Did you tell them you are advocating perhaps not donating to the DNC?
Edited on Fri Aug-03-07 12:49 PM by madfloridian
Maybe they don't understand...or maybe they do and I don't.
From your ER post:

"They are asking for money and I sure would like to be sure what exactly it is for and how effective it might be BEFORE I send it. My 50 bucks goes to Greg Palast before it goes to the DNC...What say you folks about Dean's plan?"

And then someone responds....they say let Dean get the beltway to fund it.

So I wonder about a lot of stuff.

12. Well, many in that thread were agreeing not to donate to the DNC
So I am wondering why our party leaders like Dean even bother...when people say they will donate first to Palast...then say they are not sure about the DNC plan.

I wonder why they bother? I don't see why our party leaders even bother to do anything anymore...they get misquoted and questioned here at a Dem forum so much.

I was just wondering if you told them that many in the election forum are advocating against supporting DNC plan.

I guess maybe you can see why that would bother some. In fact here is the link to that thread which questions Dean's plan and pushes Palast.

And by the way there is nothing to say you can't give to both the Greg Palast Investigative team and the DNC voting drive. I've met Greg several times in Austin and I think his efforts to get the story on the "pre-crime" voter felon purge list and the caging story are finally getting the respect they deserve from the media and Congress. I say pre-crime because he's got copies of those lists that show the convictions occurring in 2010 etc.

:toast: to our good friend Greg Palast!

3-Year Overdue NOW Report Links Scheme to Top Republican Operatives and White House
Former US Attorney David Iglesias Believes Withheld WH Emails May Show Criminal Involvement in '04 Election Theft...
Guest Blogged by Alan Breslauer

Last night --- nearly three years after it was first reported by the BBC --- PBS's NOW finally exposed the Republican Party conspiracy to steal the 2004 Presidential Election. Whaddayaknow?

The 15 minute segment concentrates on "Voter Caging" and features appearances by Greg Palast and former US attorney David Iglesias. Readers will recall that Palast, who originally broke this story in 2004, has written BRAD BLOG exclusives on voter caging and on Tim Griffin, who was one of the leaders of the illegal scheme.

For even more on the NOW story, voter caging, and the Republican conspiracy to steal the 2004 election, listen to the replay of Brad guest hosting on the Peter B. Collins Show yesterday. Brad speaks to Palast in the first hour and interviews Bryan Myers, who produced the NOW segment, in the second hour.

Greg Palast: Busted And Crimes Of The Times
By Greg Palast

Cutely buried in the 18th paragraph in a story about Alberto Gonzales on Sunday was a slyly-worded updated confession by the New York Times that, in 2004, the Bush Administration leaned on its editors to spike a story about illegal invasions of citizens’ private records (”data mining”). The Times editors smothered the story. They finally ran it - a year later - after Bush was safely re-elected.

As a journalist, this makes me want to throw up.

For two reasons: First, while The Times was covering up Bush’s KGB-style data-mining operation, the Palast team was revealing its secrets. We published confidential FBI memos detailing horrific schemes for illegal spying using Bush’s favored contractor, a company called ChoicePoint Inc.

The second reason The Times ‘confession’ makes me ill: While the publishers at the Paper of Record were counting their millions, the Palast Investigative Fund was slowly going broke.

Well, we’ve made it: Last Friday, the main-stream US media, through the venerable PBS program ‘NOW’, finally broadcast our reportage on the “caging” of voters, a story we first broke 3 years ago. BEFORE the 2004 election.

Or simply make an open no-gift donation for a sum of your choice. (All options and many other signed items can be found at the Palast Investigative Fund Homepage.)

3. Pass on this note, post it and make certain your group and friends sign on to GregPalast.com, read our work, and support it.

We are lucky to have prestigious outlets for our work, but the research is funded wholly by citizens like you, not by media moguls. And the content proves it. Our much-praised investigation in New Orleans was financed entirely by a score of selfless donors.

It’s up to you. Real investigative reporting is a money-burning task. And a team effort. Please support our team by donating at least $100 to the not-for-profit Investigative Fund.

Bequests and in-kind donations are also appreciated.

Pick up the New York Times each day and for your $500 a year, you get all the news they find fit to print. Or donate a fraction of that for your signed copy of Armed Madhouse or The Best Democracy Money Can Buy for the real story on the prosecutor firings, caging and all the news that gives them fits.

Yours,
Greg Palast

http://www.gregpalast.com/busted-crimes-of-the-times
A further note on the The Crimes of the The Times

If I single out The New York Times, it’s because they are the BEST America has to offer, Lord help us. If you haven’t lost your lunch yet, read what the Sunday Times said in paragraph 18 . Only now does The Times tell us:

“The first known assertion by administration officials that there had been no serious disagreement within the government about the legality of the N.S.A. program came in talks with New York Times editors in 2004. IN AN EFFORT TO PERSUADE THE EDITORS NOT TO DISCLOSE THE EAVESDROPPING PROGRAM, SENIOR OFFICIALS REPEATEDLY CITED THE LACK OF DISSENT AS EVIDENCE OF THE PROGRAM’S LAWFULNESS.”

In other words, the Bush enforcers told The Times (and apparently its editors accepted without question) that there was no major dissent at the top levels of government over this Spies-R-Us scheme. That is, The Times blindly swallowed the very assertion that Senators now term, ‘perjury.’

The Times waited until the election had passed and billions of records were illegally “mined.” And they got the Pulitzer for it. Congrats!

21. Sorry Melissa. I won't donate to Palast.
He uses sensationalism to sell books and doesn't provide adequate documentation for some of his assertions -- aka yellow journalism.

If he categorized his opinions as just that, it would be one thing, but he doesn't. He sells it as if it's all truth and people just buy the whole story without question. Even when he's corrected and shown the facts, he won't make retractions. Not good journalism.

He's like Bev Harris in many ways. Some really good work spoiled by the inadequately documented/proven accusations and smears that are interwoven with the truth in order to make better drama.

Love the hat though. Like Bogart in the Maltese Falcon. Very Sam Spadesque.

Caging lists
Iraq's Oil'
Bush's Energy Plan

and most importantly what we need to fund NOW...
The Scheme to Swipe 2008.

These are issues that have had a dearth of in depth coverage in the media. Greg's tiny team needs our bucks now to get the word out. Please help with whatever you can manage. The scheme to swipe 2008 is an important story to have coverage on!

I have been chatting with these good folks and it is a tiny team. A little can go a long way. Please send whatever you can. The Palast Investigative Team has been deeply appreciative of our efforts here and they believe, as I do, That DU ROCKS!

38. Palast DOES do retractions and also expands and updates information
previously published.

You are dead wrong.

It is sickening to me to see people like Palast maligned unfairly. I and many other consider him to be a hero and one of the very few journalists seeking the truth.

And don't be naive Cookie Wookie -- ALL writers take the most sensational facts and underline them to sell books. There is nothing immoral about that.

I loved Palast's last book, and while I don't agree with 100% of what he writes, he is right on target about so much that it should be obvious to anyone that he deserves our respect.

It always amazes me at how easily DUers are willing to completely trash people who are working their asses off in the name of truth and justice. It's completely mind boggling.

And self destructive.

While you are there you might also want to leave them some funds to do the fine work that they do so well. Here is a link for that. http://www.palastinvestigativefund.org/
If you do, they will be happy to give you a gift if you would like...a signed copy of Armed Madhouse is yours for a 50 buck donation. Personally, I appreciate the gift to democracy of their fine reporting, so no other gift is needed for me. Keep the book. I prefer more great articles that expose this mis administration!

I'll let DU know if he responds. Great idea. I'll send these quotes along with those questions.

How do you explain Democrat-controlled King
County, which controls the state of Washington (Washington has 3 million voters
and 1.2 million of them are King County). We caught King County in the act of
deleting three hours from the audit log, and in this county, which is 2/3
mail-in, they kept "finding" new ballots every time the Republican pulled ahead
in a hand recount for the governor's race.

The truth is it's whoever has access to the controls. It's ridiculous to pretend
only the Republicans are rigging elections.
~Bev Harris

The 2004 Washington gubernatorial election absolutely reeked. In fact, King County and several other Washington locations have a smelly history.

In that 2004 election, Black Box Voting discovered three hours purged from a King County audit log (King County, with over 1 million voters out of Washington State's 3 million, dominates the state). King County has about 700,000 mail-in ballots during federal elections, and in the election you reference, like rabbits out of a hat, new ballots kept being "found" -- not once, not twice, not three times, but FOUR TIMES! The last batch of mystery ballots showed up four months after the election.

If prosecutors were urged to consequate this bizarre chain of election events by conducting a formal investigation or filing charges, that would certainly be appropriate.~Bev Harris 3-14-07

The Seattle Times noted in February 2007 that "One of the most persistent rumors in Seattle legal circles is that the Justice Department forced McKay, a Republican, to resign to appease Washington state Republicans angry over the 2004 governor's race. Some believe McKay's dismissal was retribution for his failure to convene a federal grand jury to investigate allegations of voter fraud in the race."

http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/061207J.shtml
McKay believes his ouster was due in part to the fact that Republicans were angry that McKay did not convene a federal grand jury to pursue allegations of voter fraud related to the 2004 governor's election in the state in which Democrat Christine Gregoire defeated Republican Dino Rossi by a margin of 129 votes.

McKay told me during an exclusive interview recently that there were some Republicans in his district with close ties to the White House who demanded he launch an investigation into the election and bring charges against individuals for voter fraud, despite the fact there was no evidence to support the claims of vote-rigging.

Again, thanks for the suggestion. I'll get this info to him immediately. Something tells me he is already aware of this. If not, he will be now. Like I said earlier, I'll let DU know when and if I get a response.

But what we are helping support is the Palast Investigative Team.
Here's where your donation goes.

This from Greg Palast...

We are lucky to have prestigious outlets for our work, but the research is funded wholly by citizens like you, not by media moguls. And the content proves it. Our much-praised investigation in New Orleans was financed entirely by a score of selfless donors.

Here is a nice Greg Palast Investigation Team story for you...

Top Hurricane Expert Says Officials Threatened His Job Over Pre-Katrina Warnings

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On the eve of the first anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, investigative journalist Greg Palast reports that a top hurricane expert says government officials threatened his job over his warnings about the impending disaster.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tomorrow marks the first anniversary of Hurricane Katrina that ravaged the Gulf Coast of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. The storm was the most powerful and expensive natural disaster to hit the U.S- killing more than 1,500 people in New Orleans alone, displacing some 770,000 residents and destroying over 300,000 homes. The federal government's response to the disaster was widely condemned - images of the tens of thousands of New Orleans residents piling into the city's superdome stadium pleading for food, water and aid became symbolic of the government's inaction.
In the aftermath of the storm, it become increasingly clear that the effects of Hurricane Katrina were made far worse by government incompetence and neglect. Warnings about the severity of the storm were ignored and the levees which were supposed to prevent New Orleans from flooding were grossly inadequate. And, as investigative reporter Greg Palast reveals in his new report, there were major holes in the city's evacuation plan.

Greg Palast, investigative reporter and author of "Armed Madhouse" reports from New Orleans. Produced by Jacquie Soohen of Big Noise Films and Matt Pascarella.

From Penguin Books...
Armed Madhouse
Who's Afraid of Osama Wolf?, China Floats, Bush Sinks, The Scheme to Steal '08,No Child's Behind Left, and Other Dispatches from the Front Lines of th

The "top journalist in America and the funniest" (Randi Rhodes, Air America), takes his previous New York Times bestseller a step further with hot undercover dispatches - hanging out the dirty underpants of the "armed and dangerous clowns that rule us."

A White House spokesman said, "We hate that sonovabitch." They're not alone: From corporate suites to Osama's cave, they fear what Britain's Guardian calls "investigations up there with Woodward and Bernstein—and a lot funnier." But Greg Palast's fanatic following (nearly two million readers of his Web column) has made him "a cult fave among progressives" (Village Voice) who can't wait for his next release.

Palast's old-style gum-shoe detective work to dig out the info on the War on Terror, greed-dripping schemes to seize little nations with lots of oil, the hidden program to steal the 2008 election, and the media biases that keep it unreported are the meat and bones of this BBC television reporter's new book. Armed Madhouse is illustrated with dozens of documents marked "secret" and "confidential" that have walked out of file cabinets and fallen into Palast's hands.

You won't find Palast in The New York Times (except its bestseller list), but you will read his reports on the hottest Web sites worldwide, hear him regularly on Air America and the Pacifica radio networks, and see his stories reappearing as the basis for Eminem's hit video "Mosh," Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11, and sampled by a dozen of today's top platinum rock artists.

81. It has come to my attention that some folks don't know who Greg Is...
More from his Bio...
Palast, who has led investigations for government on three continents, has an academic side: the author of Democracy and Regulation, a seminal treatise on energy corporations and government control commissioned by the United Nations based on his lectures at Cambridge University and the University of Sao Paulo.

Beginning in the 1970s, having earned his degree in finance studying under Milton Friedman and free-trade luminaries, Palast went on to challenge their vision of a New Global Order, working for the United Steelworkers of America, the Enron workers’ coalition in Latin America and consumer and environmental groups worldwide. As an investigator for the Chugach Natives of Alaska, he uncovered the oil company frauds which led to the grounding of the Exxon Valdez. His racketeering probe of a nuclear plant operator led to one of the largest jury judgments in US history

In 1998 Palast went undercover for Britain’s Observer, worked his way inside the prime minister’s inner circle and busted open Tony Blair’s biggest scandal, “Lobbygate,” chosen by Palast’s press colleagues in the UK as “Story of the Year.” As the Chicago Tribune said, became a “fanatic about documents–especially those marked “secret and confidential” from the locked file cabinets of the FBI, the World Bank, the US State Department and other closed-door operations of government and industry–which regularly find their way into Palast’s hands. The inside information he obtained on Rev. Pat Robertson won him a nomination as Britain’s top business journalist.

Palast, Guerrilla News Network’s Guerrilla of the Year, is Patron of the Trinity College Philosophical Society, an honor previously held by Jonathan Swift and Oscar Wilde. His writings have won the Financial Times David Thomas Prize–and inspired the Eminem video, Mosh. “An American hero,” said Martin Luther King III. In the BBC documentary, Bush Family Fortunes, Palast exposed George Bush Jr.’s dodging the Vietnam War draft. Greg Palast, says Noam Chomsky, “Upsets all the right people.”

Palast won the George Orwell Courage in Journalism Award for his BBC documentary, Bush Family Fortunes.

Scoop Interview with Greg Palast

www.gregpalast.com/scoop-interview-with-greg-palast

Over the past decade best-selling author Greg Palast has put the word “investigation” back into US journalism (while working mainly for publications in the United Kingdom). And even if much of the US media steadfastly continue to ignore his remarkable investigations – the fruit of his work is more than apparent in numerous aspects of US political life – most obviously in the growing awareness within the United States of the decay of its democratic processes and massive efforts in recent elections by the GOP to disenfranchise black voters.

A former RICO corruption prosecutor Palast became a journalist a little over 10 years ago. His latest two books “The Best Democracy Money can Buy” and “Armed Madhouse” are both New York Times best-sellers and are required reading for any person seriously interested in what is really going on inside the United States.

Scoop’s Alastair Thompson caught up with him today for a wide ranging interview. Click here to read the transcript.

Here is an excerpt from the Scoop story...

Palast:
One thing I've added in the new edition of Armed Madhouse is records from the state of Ohio where someone had literally crossed out--you'll see the actual cross-outs on these documents--where they'd crossed out and removed voting machines from African American neighborhoods. That's why you had these massive lines. They deliberately removed machines so that there'd be gigantic back-up lines. Seven- and eight-hour waits to vote if you were in a minority neighborhood, but if you were in a white suburban neighborhood, you walked right in and voted. That was just one of the games that they played.

Massive challenges. Guys with little Blackberries challenging voters as they came up. No particular reason, but basically Democrats are black and they're pretty much defenseless. And, of course, the US media doesn't cover this because the US media doesn't cover anything that involves black people or poor people, in particular. And they're not going to do anything that involves challenging, suggesting that the American presidency was decided by an electoral coup d'etat.

Scoop:
What does all this tell us about the state of American democracy? Tim Griffin, I think, was subsequently appointed as the US Attorney for Arkansas, wasn't he?

Palast:
That's right. Tim Griffin, the guy who ran the purge operation!

You have to understand, it's against the law to target black voters. I was working, I've been working with an elections attorney Robert F. Kennedy, Jr--son of the murdered Attorney General--and he was saying, "You know, this is a crime. This is a go-to-jail crime in America." You cannot target black voters en masse to take away their votes. This is what the Martin Luther King laws were all about. The Voting Rights Act of '65 passed after King was gunned down. You can't do this. So now you actually have a perpetrator--a criminal--as a prosecutor.
