|
That doesn't mean we have to be a captive audience to abuse. Ignoring someone who is abusive is the moral equivalent of walking away from a drunken blowhard at a cocktail party.
I haven't looked lately, but I think it's two. It was up to five, but three are no longer with us, may they rest in peace.

Didn't you read the whole porno/prostitution thread? Both of them actually? I always support the sex trades. I have friends in the sex trades.
It wasn't really a fight. I said I thought Playboy was a better magazine and more respectful because I don't think Just Naked is porno and you said Hustler was better and I said I thought Hustler actually portrays violence toward women because I remembered something with a woman and a screwdriver.
Now that I think about it though, I don't think the screwdriver was Hustler. I think it was Zappa's 200 Motels.

And yeah, there is alert, but when you end up alerting your ass off all the time on someone it is easier to just ignore them.
I don't have any on it now, but for a spell I had a few on who would follow me around and go off topic and harass me. Some posts were deleted, and I think two of em were tombstoned.
I don't mind arguing with someone over points on an issue, hell Lee and I have had our quibbles over time, but we still are nice to each other. Sadly you get some people that if you piss them off or don't agree they make it personal and start fuckin with you.
On ignore I just see their shit, kind of like the hide thread feature :)

I have never put anyone on ignore just because I may have had a disagrement with them.
I put people on ignore when the spam the boards with crap, they're annoying etc.. I simply do not believe I have to associate with people I do not want to.
Funny thing is the Admins thought it important enough to create the feature yet so many think not using it makes them superior in some way. Personally, I believe it makes the place more productive and fun.

We get these threads quite often now. I fail to understand why those who do not use the feature must remind us at every possible opportunity that they don't. Is there nothing else to discuss?
I use the ignore feature, I'm glad it's available, and I'll continue using it.
I don't put up with shit in real life, why should I do it here as well?

I feel that one of the purposes of my being at DU is to know what people are thinking, whether I agree with it or not.
However, if someone was constantly hounding me, or if I felt so provoked by someone that I was at risk of getting myself tombstoned, then I'd use it. Sometimes I wish one could use the ignore feature on certain people in real life!

It's pretty amazing that the same people generally populate the stupider anti-science threads as well.

Chavez was in command of a squadron of Alien Space Craft which he disguised as commercial aircraft and used to spread chemtrails all over New York after which everyone went into a suggestive hypnotic state. After planting explosives in the building and videotaping the collapse everyone woke and believed that the buildings came down due to aircraft flying into the WTC towers.

I don't ignore anyone, although I know a few have ignored me... I respond to some of their posts anyways. What they would find suprising is that although we disagree on one subject, we agree on many more. I think it's silly to ignore opposing views on a subject, instead of confronting and debating the issue.

46. Did you know there are still different levels of ignore? |
|
Admin got rid of the nuclear option that stops a DUer from posting in your thread. But you can choose to block someone's posts, PMs, threads, or all three.
These are the kind of threads I don't wanna see when I sign on:
"I don't make sense but I must share" Please send me the decoder ring or go to bed.
"My life sucks, why?" My life sucks too. I try to keep it to myself.
"This is it. The end. We're fucked people" I can't afford antidepressants (see 'my life sucks') so, no thanks.
"FUCK THESE PEOPLE WHY DOESN'T SOMEONE STOP THEM???" The angry cousin of 'I don't make sense but I must share'
There are a handful of people whose threads are always variations on these themes. They rarely post in others' threads so it doesn't matter if I don't block their posts. I don't even block all of them. But I block the worst of them.

It wasn't something I wanted to do, but when you've got a prolific poster that generally has nothing positive to add to the discussion, what are the choices? I've only used the feature once and not without serious consideration. I do not suffer fools and idiots easily, there are too many important issues to be studied.

72. I haven't put anyone on my ignore list in months.. |
|
its easy to let paranoia control what we read. I discovered the more I added to my ignore list, the more posters I wanted to add. then I suspected everyone on this growing ignore list only posted bad things about me, and all these terrible people could attack and read whatever I posted..yet I couldn't respond.
finally I cleared out my ignore list completely, and discovered that the world never revolved around me. I was again reading the opinions of those I disagreed with, and realized that most of the time I agreed with those once on my ignore list.
I believe paranoia is the foundation of Republican politics. they don't wish to discuss or debate different issues or find solutions to our problems. they criticize all solutions, those who propose them, and attack all who draw attention to these problems as bleeding hearts or as whiners. we seek to hold those in power accountable, while viewing government as a servant of the taxpayers. Republicans will always condemn healthcare reform, even when a Democrat embraces nothing more than providing private health insurance for every child. such an approach will be attacked as Hillary-care, socialism, or as a back road to rationing healthcare. no matter how hard we try to compromise, even if we support replacing Medicaid with a state run program like SCHIP, they'll come back and attack that as "government controlled healthcare"!
if conservatives would actually listen, like most Democrats do, perhaps ignore lists and even forums like DemocraticUnderground wouldn't be needed. if Republicans cared about solving problems instead of attacking every possible solution as something worse, then maybe liberals and conservatives could debate those issues on the same message board! :wow:

how many seem to feel that not using ignore is a "virtue." I find it makes my perusing these parts more pleasant and healthy (BP and all that). Those I have on ignore have shown themselves to be racist, combative+stupid, trollish and/or disruptive. I chuckle watching others go off on them, daily thanking Elad for his IT compassion. I'm considering adding a poster with whom I have no quibble other than multiple posts of tabloid topics. Ignore shortens my pages and saves time.

If it were professing to reflect the full spectrum of political views, then edited out everything to the right of Hillary Clinton, I would think the board had been weakened, yes. I come here to read things by other people on the left. I'm not going to ignore everyone who disagrees with my particular views within that field, because it'd give me a false impression on just what the range of debate actually is.

134. These threads always bring out the 'thicker-skinned/more democratic than thou' |
|
as if the entire point of the ignore feature is to hide from debate. While I'm sure there are some who use it that way, the primary purpose — at least, I believe this is what the admins had in mind, as they do on most forums — is to circumvent flame wars between two people.
I have 10 people on ignore; all but one have proven themselves to be irretrievable assbuckets — the type of people who look for a fight, start one and thrive on continuing it, and whose favorite "debate" tactics are snark and personal attacks. I use the ignore feature to "enhance my posting experience," only after repeated and rather vile confrontations.
Something tells me that many of the "thicker-skinned/more democratic than thou" group use "ignore" in other aspects of their lives — with Faux Noise, for example, as well as in personal relationships with people they hold in contempt. But somehow, here, they think they're above that.

But, short of that, the ignore button will have to do. And for what it's worth, I don't like people very much and the more attention I pay, the less I like. It's becoming painfully apparent that things will have to get allot worse before they ever get better. It will be interesting to see if the idiots wake up before the whole system falls apart.
