Gang Members Using Military Training To Train Kids
http://kutv.com/topstories/topstories_story_210231650.html

(CBS News) Like most American cities, Columbia, South Carolina, has its share of problems, but nothing prepared the Sheriff Leon Lott for what his department discovered last August.

Four U.S. Marines – who proudly snapped pictures of each other – were recruiting local kids, some as young as 13, into the Crips street gang. The leader was a lance corporal.

"We have enough problems with local kids and what they are doing," Lott, the Richland County Sheriff, said. "But to have the Marines – someone who is trained – to come up here and recruit and give them the training they've had in the military, it scares me to death cause it tells me we're at war with these gangs."

It's a concern also raised by the FBI. In a recent report the agency warned: "Military training could ultimately result in more sophisticated and deadly gangs ... as well deadly assaults on law enforcement officers."

CBS News has learned that military police have briefed local authorities in major cities, including New York, about the rising danger that gang members in the military could share their skills with gangs on the streets. That could include combat, logistics, and even emergency medical skills.

3. Idiot editors. I've read this story, and the headline is not justified
Gang members MIGHT do this, they COULD do this, but there is no tangible evidence that they ARE doing this. Someone decided not to care about that detail though.

8. That's news?!?! This has been going on since the early 80's ... if not before
If they were to look into the older gang members, they'd find a bunch of ex military.

9. This will eventually lead to warlordism on American streets if it isn't stopped.
If you don't come up with solutions to fight the kind of poverty that gives rise to ghettos and the resulting gangs, you're going to lose your cities to warlords with militia-style gangs.

10. Urban warfare. Get out of the cities. Why do you think there are so
many gated communities?

I read a book in the very early 90's about this issue. I can not remember the title, It was something like how to survive the 90's or a crash of the market... the author was only off in the timeline. He was 10 years or so ahead of his time.

No tin foil or anything, the destruction of our society is happening. There will be armed gangs on the street assaulting the gated communities.

Think France.

11. This Really is Nothing New...
While the possibility is frightening, this really is nothing new. Outlaw motorcycle gangs were largly founded/staffed by WW2 and Korean War veterans. Of course they applied their experience/training to their new clubs...
