Yesterday I visited with a few of my neighbors
Edited on Sat Aug-04-07 05:32 PM by shance
and made up some packets of information and articles regarding the issue of surveillance and recent stories of privacy violations and illegal seizures happening locally and nationwide, to average citizens exercising their free speech rights and in many cases simply going about their daily lives.

In short, it was a very productive and positive day.

I had an opportunity to get to know some of my neighbors better, taste two new terrific hot teas**, talk about lots of things from gardening and family stuff, trips they've taken and overall what's been going on in their lives. It is something that I could certainly be doing more of.

I think especially now, at a time that Washington seems totally blind, deaf and indifferent to our voices, we have to, as Howard Dean stated so prolifically, "take our power back".

I think it benefits us to realize where our true power is. It's in our neighborhoods. Our value as Americans and as individuals is where we directly live. Although we need to keep making our presence known to those in Washington by trying to build relationships there, its more meaningful (I think) and as well more realistic to build connections with those who live around us.

There is a lot happening in the neighborhoods that needs to be addressed.

It seems the Bush Administration has already been at work (probably since 2001) recruiting those who favor his policies and who are willing to "watch" other neighbors. In addition, in many areas, it is increasingly becoming apparent through growing issues like community based harassment, individuals are being recruited to monitor, and in some cases, harass and intimidate neighbors for a variety of baseless and unwarranted reasons. It is also probably no coincidence that many who have been harassed and "watched" have been good, patriotic citizens who happen to oppose the policies implemented by this Administration and as well by those approving the Administrations actions in Congress.

I thought I would share my 'cover letter' included in my information packet, so perhaps it might help those of you who want to take a more active role in building relationships with others in your neighborhood and feel more empowered and connected by taking such action.

Here tis:

Dear Neighbors,

I wanted to write you and include some information regarding some issues that now seem to be affecting many of us on a local level, as well as nationally in scope.

Regardless of what political affiliation you may or may not have, the reality is we are experiencing on the national, state and local levels some increasingly significant restrictions involving our most precious rights as citizens.

As you will read from the enclosed information and you may already be aware, that the Bush Administration along with the help of Homeland Security and other agencies, are utilizing our tax dollars to essentially violate and eliminate Constitutional rights, privacy laws and our civil liberties in the name of “national security” and the “war on terror”.

Many of us have found the utilization and justification of such reasoning like “national security” and the “war on terror” have become rationalizations which are now being used in ways which exploit us all as individuals and enable potential abuses of power, and thus leave citizens vulnerable to violations that otherwise would not be tolerated.

The growing restrictions on free speech and invasions on all areas of our personal, financial, private and familial lives affects all of us as American citizens, not simply those of us who may be opposed to the actions of the present Administration.

We are all subject to such invasions now, through the passage of legislation like the Patriot Act, which allows essentially violations of all of our rights and our property, as citizens.

In short it is not right and that is why I am writing today.

For the past few years many of us in the activist community, as well as those who are non-political, who have simply confronted issues of corruption and/or wrongdoings on a local and federal level, have experienced acts of harassment and intimidation, and now concluded it is an issue that necessitates involvement and participation by all citizens and neighbors on a local level as well as state and federal.

When any person is subjected to harassment, abuse and/or violations of their most basic rights, then we all become a potential target of such actions.

I hope you will take the time to look over the enclosed information and consider taking a more active part in protecting those rights which are being actively targeted and potentially eliminated in the name of ironically enough “security”.

None of us are secure when our rights as citizens become null and void.

Most sincerely,

XXXXX

P.S. I am planning to address this issue at the next Neighborhood Watch/Community Council meeting and I hope you will attend as well. There are also some of us planning to host a meeting in the near future in order to meet more neighbors, and as well to discuss various issues happening here in the neighborhood and and in Washington, and how it affects us and how we can better protect and support one another as a community and promote more active participation on a local level.

2. What A GREAT Idea... I Wish It Would Work Down Here In Florida.... I Do
want to say something and I DON'T want to make a big deal of it, but I got called out on it once myself and have NEVER forgotten it. I make mistakes ALL THE TIME myself, so I mean this in the nicest way.

There is no such word as IRREGARDLESS! It's only REGARDLESS. People use it all the time, I've even heard journalists say it so don't be offended. I just thought you might want to know.

I feel bad now, but I hope I was helpful.

15. ACTUALLY, I Think I Probably Owe YOU The Dollar.... You Gave
me a lot of PC help a couple of months ago.

Guess what?? Where I live in Florida we've had so little rain, but we've heard lots of thunder and saw lightening too! Rained around us, but never on my house. Well, one day there was LOTS of lightening and then one humongous clap and guess what it hit??

After hours and hours of trying to get that ASUS update, it fried my PC and the Comcast modem! The ONLY plug-ins that had surge protectors! Kind of like that commercial where the lady says that it's her last car payment and the mirror falls off!

My husband was born in Tampa! We live in Nokomis now, a little south of Sarasota. I do like where I live, it's quiet and close to the beach, but the politics SUCK... BIG TIME!

13. Thank you Save***
And I just knew someone would ask about the teas...***

Im not much of a tea conniseur, but I think I'm now going to become one.

One of them was a peppermint (excellent!), and I think the other was an English Breakfast....they were both wonderful.

I'll put in a call to them to get the tea scoop :)

***Oh and an added perk. I even was given a tomato from one of my neighbors gardens, and I put it on my tuna sandwich yesterday and have to say it was probably the best, sweetest tomato I've ever had.

30. I think your idea awesome and the beauty is in its simplicity, DEMS
get out and get to know your neighbors!! We're swimming upstream against the 'MSM' and this could be an easy and fun way to get the real news out to our communities. So many people just don't know the truth of what's going on in our government. (English breakfast tea is my favorite and nothing the grocery store has beats a home-grown tomato still warm from the sun). Thanks again for sharing this idea!

14. Excellent!
:toast:

Your cover letter is very well written and hits just the right tone. My only editorial suggestion would be to shorten a few of the sentences by breaking them at the commas. This helps readability esp for a world used to sound bites. But otherwise fantastic.

This direct approach can really be powerful. I think the timing is perfect. People have a level of concern, they just don't know what to do about it.

Terrific point on readability.

I will definitely add in a few commas and/or better yet, try and condense the sentences.

Much appreciated :)

Both my parents were journalists earlier in their lives. My Mom also has done a lot of grassroots political work in a number of areas. I grew up reading everything they wrote. It just rubs off....

I don't think you need to condense what you're saying so much as just put in some periods where you have commas.

Example:

For the past few years many of us in the activist community, as well as those who are non-political, have confronted issues of corruption or wrongdoings on a local and federal level. Some of us have experienced acts of harassment and intimidation for this. We have concluded that involvement and participation by all citizens and neighbors is necessary to address these issues.

*If I've changed any meanings, just adjust, but you get the idea. Break it up a bit. :)

PS--"citizens and neighbors" implies local and federal (since you already made it clear before that).

19. Active participation is key. Thank you for sharing this with us.
Your cover letter is wonderful. I would like your permission to "borrow" it for a local Peace Day event in my community. This event will be held at a park nestled smack dab in the middle of a small beach community that I'm a part of. I've been looking for new ways to interact with our neighbors and I believe you have just steered me in the right direction. Thank you for that.

It's important to get people talking. We have many more commonalities than differences. The RULE OF LAW protects US ALL. May I "borrow" your letter?

Time to work on my info packet!

26. Hi Koko, well, you would be surprised. Apparently my anti-war stance
Edited on Sat Aug-04-07 11:12 PM by shance
(that or my familial connections to some Washington Republicans) has caused some individuals to be rather over-interested in my daily activities and/or a bit too invasive shall we say.

With that said there are some neighbors that are active and care about what is going on and realize how our basic rights are being jeopardized and it makes everyone vulnerable in the long run.

I do hope for you that you find some neighbors living close by who are like minded and who affirm and understand how valid these concerns are, and see the need to participate in our communities. Hopefully if more of us reach out to others, others will also become active in ways that make them feel proactive and productive.
