Shadow's Taxicab Reports: My First Days On The Day Shift |
|
.................................................
Oh, yeah, nothing interesting happens on the day shift BTW so these reports may get significantly less interesting. There was a report of a suicide on our base last night. Strictly rummor but if true add it to Bush's butcher's bill. Tip your cabbie anyway because apparently nobody during the day do.

3. Just got back from New York |
|
if I had known I would have asked for you! :) I don't know if you can do that or not but I thought I would respond anyway. BTW, we did tip our cabbies, the few that we used. You can ask ThomCat, he was with us on one ride.
Gotta say, you could not get me to drive in that city! Loved the city just adored my time there but driving looks to be rather difficult to say the least.

6. Is the day shift permanent? |
|
I'd say it's a good thing, but the tip issue is troubling. Expecting less moolah? Anyways, I hope it's a good change for you.

I drove night cab in a little town for a while. There is something that you encounter, driving a cab at night, that just kills a little bit of your soul.
The things I have seen...one of the worst was this 17 year old girl with a drinking problem. Pretty thing. Not dumb either, just a terrible, abusive family life. She had been at some drinking party in a field. She got very drunk. When I picked her up her clothes were quite askew and asunder and she smelled like a peep show. She had been the main attraction at the party. Quite a number of young swains had their dirty way with her while she was blasted on the best part of a bottle of Southern Comfort. I got to drive her home.
That one still stays with me.
The other one was a once-attractive woman who had what I consider end-stage alcoholism. Cops called for me to take her home. They had found her rolling around in the parking lot of a convenience store. she was on her second 1.75l bottle of vodka that day. First thing she does, when she gets in the cab is offer me some sexual favors. When I struggled to kindly and gracefully decline, without hurting her feelings she went off, crying and whatnot. That one stays with me as well. It was also the "mirror held up to me". It was the night I took my last drink, since so much of myself and what I was telling myself, in my own head, when I was drinking too much, was coming out of her mouth. Quite a unique experience, to say the least.
Final thing was at first, near-disassociative cognitive dissonance, but now, I see the humor: an old lady got in the cab and immediately started talking to me about her latest health problem, in very exacting detail. Her prolapsed uterus.

10. Less money. Much less stress. Even trade IMO. |
|
Still only doing it one day a week and there's a good chance if I have to keep taking more interesting meds from my doc then I probably won't be able to do it at all.
