Iglesias, Ethics Members To Meet; Wilson Denies Inquiry

WASHINGTON -- Former U.S. Attorney David Iglesias said he will talk privately with two members of the House ethics committee today about his pre-election telephone call from Rep. Heather Wilson, RN.M.
"It's going to be bad," Iglesias told the Journal in a telephone interview, describing what he would tell the committee's chairwoman and second-ranking Republican. He added that he wouldn't veer from earlier congressional testimony.
Meanwhile, a spokesman for Wilson said Tuesday that she is not the target of an ethics probe.
"It is our understanding there is no ethics investigation," said Wilson spokesman Joel Hannahs. "If a member of Congress has not been informed, there is no investigation."
Bill O'Reilly, staff director of the House Committee on Standards and Official Conduct -- commonly referred to as the House ethics committee -- said the committee's rules do not allow him to confirm or deny an investigation of a House member.
Iglesias, a Republican who was fired as New Mexico's top federal prosecutor in December, has said he lost his job because he refused to rush corruption indictments against prominent Democrats before the November 2006 elections.
Iglesias claims he felt pressured by calls from Wilson, who was facing a tough re-election fight, and Sen. Pete Domenici, R-N.M. Iglesias didn't report the calls or speak publicly about them until February, when a Justice Department official said he and other prosecutors were let go for performance-related issues.
