It was a potent and emotionally charged label. It meant in no uncertain terms that a person was actively helping the enemy against their own people.
Personally, I've been using "Vichy Dems" for 6 years now, but that no longer seems strong enough -- which is why I've switched to "collaborator": it's what you call the lowest of the low.
