Why "DO" I come here?
This site used to be (and still is) the place I came to get my news. It used to be the place to come to get HOPE in an America that was sorely lacking in that emotion.

That has slowly but surely changed over the months. DU has become a place to get salt poured into my open wounds.

Here, I find that * has stolen another of our freedoms.

Here, I find that the CONSTITUTION has been burned and stomped upon.

Here, I find that laws are being broken at the highest branches of our government and the perps are laughing at the citizens who point it out.

Here, I find that a noose is not a statement of HATE.

Here, I find that detention centers are being built in America.

Here, I find that my tax dollars are being spent to OCCUPY a sovereign country.

Here, I find out that Habeas Corpus is no longer necessary.

Here, I find out that we have secret prisons where we torture people.

Here, I find that obstruction of justice is a common occurrence in the White House.

Here, I find that elections can and have been stolen....in what was once the most democratic country in the world.

Here, I find that birthday parties are more important than saving thousands from unimaginable pain and suffering in New Orleans.

Here, I find that the Geneva Convention is NOT of use anymore.

Here, I find that spying on Americans is OK...not only OK, but encouraged.

Here, I find that signing statements are written in unprecedented numbers.

Here, I find that executive orders are written willy nilly and that, even though congress can override them, they don't.

Here, I find.........oh hell, I could go on all day long and bore everyone here to death, but its all been said before. And by those much more eloquent than me.

So, here I find myself. A self indulging masochist who gets sadder and madder every time I visit, but who, like the moth to the flame, cant NOT flutter in its presence.

SO? Why do I come here? I'm not quite sure, but if I figure it out, I will either be much more sane, or as mad as a hatter.

1. Salt may hurt like hell, but it helps heal wounds faster.
Or, you could just be completely mad. ;)

3. Live in happy ignorance or Angry knowledge
Those are the choices we are faced with these days. Me, I'd rather know what is happening than wake up one day as the brownshirts kick in my door. But I may stroke out first!

5. Because we want more out of our lives (and for our families)...
And even if we just go to work, keep our noses clean, buy stuff and don't ask no questions - we STILL couldn't escape the reality that's in front of us.

Why do we work 50-60 hours per week and not seem to get ahead?

Why do we struggle to get healthcare, and even after you pay hundreds a month, there's no guarantee of coverage?

Why are the airwaves filled with corporate,hate-filled right-wing messages?

What's going to happen in my retirement?

What kind of environment will my children grow up in?

Why are the "terrorists" always "out to get us"?

Why does everybody seem to be edgy, unfriendly and often downright hostile toward each other?

We go to DU to answer those everyday questions - and get to the root of the problems in America.

7. The list is getting longer
Of the things that the chimp has made us pine over. And it is kind of depressing and makes you want to run away but conscious won't let you just walk away and say noting.
And here we have a safe place to relieve those festering feelings caused by the crimes and misdemeanors of our leader in chief.
it is all about venting

Sean Hannity sympathizers, Rush lovers and Oreilly cheerleaders, no really, I come here cuz the level of intelligence presented on this board will be the penecillin to the stupidity foisted upon the American public by their employees in DC.

10. I come here because of the debate and the exchange of ideas
and because I get more news here than I do from the corporate media. Yes, at times things get a little passionate and then there may even be a small group of disrupters from time to time. But you gotta go with the flow. DU is a great place.

12. Seems like you want to kill the messenger...
don't you want to know the truth?

If we live in delusion we can never change anything.

But what we observe may seem overwhelming.

Fondly held notions about democracy we have taken for granted are crumbling.

Your list seems generally accurate to me. Are you saying you think these are exaggerations? Or that you just feel depressed by the weight of it all?

14. OK thanks for clarifying...
well I can understand that reaction.

I think many Americans --the ones who believed in democracy anyway (not talking about the ones who've always abused it)--are experiencing various forms of shock and have different ways of dealing with it.
Feeling overwhelmed is typical. You certainly are not alone.

The only positive thing I can say is that when there is a state of dissolution, when all illusions are shattered, there is often an opportunity for big changes. You can see this happen in the life of an individual. The same thing happens in a society. We're in the dark night fighting for the soul of this country. It's a disturbing, stressful place to be. But the more people see it and face it, the better off we will ultimately be. It won't be an easy passage to the other side. Some days I get really resentful that we just can't live our lives, trust our elected government, have faith in the future. You know, life is hard enough without all this. But this is our lot in this place and time. You're either on the bus or you're not on the bus, as they used to say in the 60's.

You can't close your eyes again once they're open. Gotta stay focused on the next plateau, on the changes you want to see. Bite off one task at a time...& don't forget to reward yourself for small achievements.

Here's some hope--we won a substantial victory in California this week in the battle to bring about true reform of our sad election system. The people who did that DID NOT give up. They saw the opportunity and they made it happen.

This fight to bring democracy to America will be fought tooth and nail. Don't expect any less.

15. I'm so glad someone else has the same thoughts I do
Glad to see it isn't just me.

It kills me to not be informed, but....sometimes I have to ask myself, "at what cost to my mental health and sanity?"

OBF:
