I'd like to be Mod For A Day.
We have a forum for discussing politics.
It's called "General Discussion - Politics".
It's right over there.
--------------------->

I come here to discuss other things.
And to see what folks are talking about that ISN'T politics.
I realize that some overlap is inevitable.
A lot of what happens in our lives is now either driven by politics, or a result of political decisions.

But I'd start by moving every thread in GD that mentions political candidates by name over there
---------------------->

Aren't you glad I'm not a mod?
;-)

or longer.

Yep, I try to avoid the candidate pushing at this point. Going through GD is like tryin to walk barefoot on a turkey farm.

what a cringe-worthy image (the barefoot walk on the turkey farm, not the trof as mod thing that would be cool.) :hi:

7. It sure is,
Although, what I have been doing is avoiding the candidate threads. From what I have seen, many are nothing more than cheerleader attempts to garner support for that particular candidate.

What I would really like to see is a real discussion about the pros and cons of each candidate. So far, haven't seen it.

25. So realtively little about strengths and positions.
So many attacks.

I find that tedious, in and of itself, but especially since this cycle started so goddamned early.

4. Well, everything is politics. But I'm with you if you mean campaign issues
that stuff has a place and the place it belongs in the GDP.

Send alerts to the mods and ask them to move campaign threads whydoncha?

10. less a criticism of mods - and more a criticism of posters and clogging
up GD when there is a GDP forum (which, if memory serves, is exactly why GDP was created - during the last pres. primary season.)

11. Clogging? Well, what to you come to GD to read, and how do political posts get in the way?
Edited on Sun Aug-05-07 02:49 PM by Buzz Clik
Right now there must be 200 forums at DU. Fishing and biking and support groups for various diseases and state-by-state chats and home improvement and gardening and conspiracy theories and theology and specific religions and labor and women and alternative lifestyles and sports and .... it goes on forever.

GD is just a big mass of stuff that could go in one of these other forums. But you know what? Hardly anybody goes there. I had a specific technical question about html coding. I posted it on the appropriate forum, and it went unanswered for as long as I could afford to wait. I reposted it on GD, and I got my answer in 15 minutes.

Is that a good thing? I dunno, but that's the way it is.

===============================

ON EDIT:

P.S. I think you have it kinda backwards. People gravitate to the specific forums when they want a slower pace and more considered responses. In GD, it's flow of consciousness.

12. not politics per se (heck that is GD) - but poltiical campaigning for a specific
candidate. That is why GDP was created. There are plenty of folks at GDP to answer questions about dem primary candidates.

Now repub primary candidates - that makes sense in GD as it is general (political) discussion rather than candidate jockeying.

14. Ah, now I understand.
Well, if this cycle goes like last time, we will start seeing the formation of candidate-specific forums. There will be special rules, and the place will be a total madhouse.

Chaos will be the order of the day.

16. I think some of the chaos and factionalism has already begun...
having been through it before - somehow I am a bit more disconnected this time around - so it does't make my blood boil in irritation the way it did last time.

13. OK...where did this belong:
I started a thread about the soldier convicted or raping and murdering the 14-year-old Iraqi girl. Is that a general discussion or a political dicussion? My issue was that the guy who acted as a look out ~~ convicted of being an accessory to a rape-murder ~~ got less that 2.5 years for what he did.

Some times I really am not sure where things belong.

or at least that is how the two were differentiated the last primary go round.

Remembering how nasty GD got in the 03/04 primaries, I'd hope the same thing would happen during this primary.

Any post on any and all primary candidates must go to GD: Politics.

Maybe the mods have not been apprised of this?
