20. Ah for the good old days
Typical login concurrency now is rarely under 35,000 residents. On weekends, until the system crashes under the weight, over 40,000 people are logged in.

The grid is an unstable as ever, we all bitch and moan, but it's still the black hole that has devoured my first life.

18. Welcome noob!
I haven't visited Progressive Island, but I'll have to TP over and check it out. I've been in Second Life since Fall 2006, and I'm there almost every night.

It's gone now, but for awhile the John Edwards SL Headquarters was in my sim, within easy walking distance. My neighbors were pissed (it was an ugly building), but I got a big kick out of seeing it there.

For newcomers who need some help getting acclimated to SL, stop by NCI. This is a great resource for learning the basics. For anyone who is interested in building, don't miss the Ivory Tower of Prims tutorials.

23. New Citizens Incorporated
http://secondpages.com/entry/show/102_NCI_Kuula_New_Citizens_Incorporated_Your_Portal_to_Second_Life

NCI is large volunteer-run center for helping newcomers. They have tons of freebies, classes, and provide gathering places where you can meet people.

Best bet for learning your way around is to join groups that share your interest, make friends, and let them mentor you for the somewhat steep learning curve. I've been inworld nearly a year now and still feel like a noob at time. There's so much to learn and do.

I've got two avatars, a SL business, lots of land, and a social circle wider than my RL one.

24. Tit for tat
I've actually sent someone from SL to DU after getting into a great political discussion inworld.

I was looking for the Harping Monkey, which was a wonderful Celtic-themed tavern, only to find that it had disappeared. But I started up a converstation with the guy who had bought the land and we quickly found a common political perspective. So we spent something like an hour ranting about Bush, the corporate media, and the Iraq War. I gave him the DU address and last I heard he's enjoying the forums daily.

35. Avatar Styling tips
Edited on Mon Aug-06-07 06:33 AM by Boomer
I'm a shape designer in SL, so here are a few tips for getting yourself past the noob stage:

1) Create a first draft shape that approaches what you have in mind for your look. (Or buy one)

2) Get a good skin. It's the comibination of skin and shape that makes an avatar distinctive, but of the two different elements, the skin is the most important. Try on demos for at least a few different design lines to see how they look on your shape. Some really good skins just may not suit the underlying shape, which is why you need to try a variety before buying. Recommendations: Tete a Pied, Naughty Designs, Cryogenics Labs, CMFF (Chip Midnight), Yummy Skins (by Robin Sojourner)

3) Once you have a skin you like, then tweak the shape to fit that skin even better (pay special attention to the face)

4) Get good hair, which usually means prim hair. Recommendations: Naughty Designs, ETD, Diversity Hair

That should get you a solid, non-noobish appearance. If you stay in SL, you'll probably find other designers that you love, but you can't go wrong with any of the above.

43. If you're new enough, you can get free skin and hair
I should have mentioned that newbies under a certain age (since sign-up) can get free skins from Tete a Pied. I don't remember what the cut-off age is, but it's worth a visit to see if you qualify. The TaP skins are good quality and can get you started without shelling out Lindens.

You can also get some very low-priced (L$10) hair at ETD. Last time I checked, they had at least 3 or 4 very nice hair styles for newbies. Again, I can't tell you the cut off age for qualifying, but it's probably something like 30 days.

44. Sleep? What is this sleep you speak of?
I gave up sleeping last September when I joined Second Life.

Some people don't find it interesting, but I was addicted from the moment I stepped foot on Orientation Island. It's like being handed a blank canvas and a gigantic box of crayolas, then being tossed into a vast stadium with crowds of people who have been drawing for months, if not years. You can spend all your time just oohing and ahhing at what they've created, or you can sit down somewhere and start doing your own thing.

If you haven't been to Svarga yet, that's always at the top of my list of places to send people. It's one of the most stunning builds in Second Life, but beyond the visual impact, there's a dynamic ecology at work with a cycle of plant growth driven by weather, terrain conditions and animal life. Be sure to feed the birds, because they are part of the eco mechanism. And find some people to play the drums with you -- the experiments in music are as much fun as the ecology.

I bought Svarga bats for my land, so every night they start swooping around my tree house.
