Wal-Mart conquers another big market

DALLAS -- It's rarely shocking anymore to watch Wal-Mart assert its dominance over rivals, but the powerhouse retailer has staged a market-share coup in North Texas that may come as a surprise to consumers and competitors alike.

In a recent poll of area Hispanic shoppers, Wal-Mart was ranked the top destination for groceries. That put the discounter above niche favorites Fiesta and Carnival for the first time in the history of the DFW Latino Trendline survey, an annual consumer behavior study by Dallas market research firm Rincón & Associates.

The Wal-Mart in the Oak Cliff area of Dallas has merchandise and displays that specifically target Hispanic shoppers.

Industry experts say the results tell at least as much about Wal-Mart's merchandising skills as they do about the evolving tastes and acculturation of Hispanic consumers, who consistently listed Fiesta and Carnival as their No. 1 and No. 2 most-visited food retailers in previous years.

"You have to hand it to Wal-Mart, because it isn't like those two chains are just sitting there, dying," said Vic Gallese, a retail specialist with Deloitte Consulting in Irving. "Sometimes it's just several little things that you do right, things that sometimes seemingly go unnoticed, that make a difference."

1. They want the NAFTA highway so the shipping and trucking unions
who collect walmart trash from contaminated China can be cut out of the deal and Mexican slave wage truckers can haul the stuff from Mexican ports through the USA. Isn't Republican corporatist rule just wonderful if you are a rich investor???

2. I hate Wal-Mart
I hate Wal-Mart... I tell family and friends to never buy me anything from there or I will throw the crap away... wouldn't want to be seen entering one to return a gift even... no matter what you do... you cannot get away from it... my sister is planning a small second wedding and she intends to get the food from Wal-Mart/Sams... don't want the food in my stomach... what the hell do you do?... even if you don't shop there it is all around you...

I try to tell people not to shop there and they say, "what difference does my shopping dollar make?" "I save money there"... they are ruining other businesses with their pricing games... their crap is crap... what money do you save when the shit don't last? what money do you save when your tax dollars pay the medical benefits of their uninsured workers? or the programs you pay for to help the poor workers' families?

they should stop the bastards!

does anyone need that much dang money and power?

5. What money do you save when the shit don't last?
Where do you buy your groceries that last longer than Walmart's? I always thought food was food. Apparently you have a store that sells food that costs more and lasts longer.

I shop at Walmart to save money. That's it.

6. Wal-Mart food is banned at democratic events in MN cd3
Next time you go to Wal-Mart to "save money" take a look at your cart as you enter the check-out... add up the items that you really don't need but looked cheap... how much are you saving when you buy all this crap? when you hand over your money to them, know who you are supporting...

What lies behind the smiley face in Wal-Mart's grocery aisle? Wal-Mart markets itself as an all-American, family-friendly grocer, but the truth behind the marketing is very different. Imported from countries with scant safety regulations, frequently-recalled and ineffectively regulated, the food for sale at Wal-Mart stores poses a threat to consumers everywhere.

Gender Discrimination At Wal-Mart

The inaugural issue of Wal-Mart Watch’s issue paper, In Depth, focuses on gender discrimination at Wal-Mart and the massive class action lawsuit female employees are waging against the company.
