It's not YOUR vote the democratic party is after, they already have it locked up |
|
Whine, complain, bitch all we want, they know and we know we will vote for the D in each election.
So they don't need to vie for our vote, it's those folks in the middle of the political spectrum they seek to please. FISA, Iraq war funding? No biggie, vote against those things and seem weak on terror, and the swing voters want to see people who are strong on the war against terror. Don't vote to 'fund the troops'? Even if people are against this war and want out, they may see pulling funds as bad for the troops and America.
The swing vote is a big tent as well, they are the ones who are not swayed by a party name but by the issue of the day, they are the ones whose vote the dems are worrying about. Democrats elected want to hold their position so they play close to the middle of the road people, they do not fear us.
There is no fear to be had from our party by us, bitch as we might we will make sure they keep their job and have us on our side come election day.
And now it seems, even if they win big again there will be those strategists who tell them "Don't use your power to change things too much, because then we will be seen as radicals and the swing voters will leave us and we will lose power" - in other words, get power to have it and not use it out of fear you will lose the power you have....
No wonder so many go WTF?
We will win big in 2008. As pissed as I am at Dems I still see them as more progressive than the right. A little something gained is better than something lost.
I just wish instead of fears for their own jobs people would just do what is needed to fix what is broken.

1. actually they DON'T have my vote locked in - for the first time in 32 years |
|
I don't like the direction and "leadership" I am seeing. I don't like a lot of things the dems have done recently. I like a lot less what they have left UNDONE.
They do not have my vote locked down. That is one thing which is still mine to give, or withhold. I agree the repukes are worse than the dems, but that's not exactly a ringing endorsement of the dems now, is it?

3. Gotta agree with you there |
|
I was a repug for years before I switched parties (well, not totally, I did vote for some dems and independents, was never totally a party voter).
Dems, especially at state levels, seem to be the best hope we have in this age.
But we also don't want them out of power and R's in, and with a 2 party system (mostly) each party knows it can count on the faithful. My father in law has never voted for anyone other them a democrat, my dad has only voted for republicans. Neither will ever change their vote.
Damned if we do a little bit, damned if don't a lot. Damned either way, but at least one way we have some hope of progress step by step, the other is regressive.
Our best hopes lay in primaries :)

2. They cannot count on either our votes or our money. |
|
At this point, we all intend to support the Democratic candidate, but that could change very quickly if the Democrats don't start standing up for our fundamental rights. I am so angry about the Democratic votes on FISA protection that I have let the powers that be know that they cannot count on my financial support.
I am particularly annoyed because I googled foreign news sources re the surveillance issue and found a German website that accused the Clinton of pressuring the EU to rescind laws protecting the privacy of Europeans' electronic communications in 1997. (See my DU blog for the link.) I was shocked by that news. At that time, the excuse for the surveillance was identity theft. After reading the statements of the Germans, I suspect that the electronic surveillance measures are intended to permit the corporations to prosecute violations of copyrights and patents. I sympathize and agree with the need to protect the rights of creative people to the fruits of their work, but I think there are other ways to achieve that. The whole terrorist argument is suspect since I have not heard of any evidence that the surveillance system has resulted in an arrest or conviction of a terrorist.
I originally was anti-Hillary, but had softened my opposition to her based on her performance in the debates. I realize she voted against the measures allowing the broadening of the Bush administration's wiretap authority, but I would like her to explain what she thinks about the Clinton administration's alleged pressuring of the European parliament in 1997 regarding rescinding privacy protection. I realize that I will be accused of Hillary bashing, but this is an extremely important issue. I want answers.

4. Ha! It is not MY vote our maybe YOUR vote, they are fucked over on |
|
an institutional level we the people can't even get close to. The electronic voting process is controlled by, shock, Repukes and will be controlled again by them in 2008. They need to get busy with voting laws and violations - almost a case in itself that is winnable in Ohio right now, just waiting for the M$M to squawk about it, oh wait, not going to happen in this lifetime.

6. I don't see Bush going for the center |
|
The RNC have a different approach...this is what we are going to do. I you want to join us fine. Otherwise you are a traitor and we will be watching you. And remember we control the "TERRA TERRA TERRA" button.
I see that every time the Dems stand up to Bush their ratings go up. Then they have a relapse of centerism and masterbate for a while until the funds dry up.
I am all for pay for play donations. When your candidate does something good drop a few bucks ($5 says you're in the game) on him/her and when they do something like give Gonzo unlimited power to tap our conversations ... not a dime.
Regardless of if they can count on our votes, they still need our money to get the message to the swingers.

7. you're spot on about who they are catering to |
|
though I don't know that I have the same faith that Dems will win big in 08.
I think chasing after the middle and ingoring their base may ultimately cost them more than they gain. How many dems do *you know that are so upset with the D leadership they could spit? I think a good number of anti-war/anti-* dems are so disillusioned that either they *wont vote or are going to vote 3rd party. Effectively they are splitting their own vote.
As a party I do think the dems are a little more progessive than the right, but they sure seem to working hard to let people know that the difference isn't significant.
