Has anyone else had to stop watching TDS |
|
and Colbert because its just not funny anymore? No, not the shows, they are still as funny as ever. But I am finding it impossible to laugh at the situation we are in now in America and the world. Its just too dire. Probably just me huh?

He said they are still funny. He doesn't doubt their politics. He implied that the situation is just too bleak for HIM to be able to laugh anymore. Actually, he didn't really imply it. He pretty much said it. You know, like the pain is just TOO great for him to laugh. The laughter is almost mockery it hurts so much.
Well, I kind of extrapolated and embellished but I think that's what he's saying. The reason I think that is because it's what I feel.

I'm nearing 50, and I know that we will successfully transition through this period of oppression, rising like the Phoenix later (as a nation) to new heights.
We WILL be fine.
And, we need you to laugh, and heal a bit during each moment of laughter, so that you will be strong when this nation needs you.
Peace and good to you!

(Assuming Maat is a "he".)
I'm 57. I feel like I have been through it all. Vietnam, Watergate, Reagan (we held "Impeachment Balls" then) the list is endless. Honest, it was this bad...or worse. There is NOTHING new under the sun (as they say). We felt the media were against us then, that they were propagandists, that our civil rights were being trampled, that we had lost America.
It all reminds me of this great Mark Twain quote (which I framed and have hanging on my wall):
"I'm an old man and have known a great many troubles, but most of them never happened."
Laugh some, take a break, as Nancy said, we need you refreshed and ready to continue the fight.

and I do it often, but not at this situation this admin has put us into. And I admire you for believing we will rise from these ashes, but it wont be in my lifetime and Im the same age as you are. And is this "we will be fine" just a feeling or a hope or is there something substantial to back it up? Not being confrontational, but really wanting an answer. ty

32. I like watching to see when Colbert's playing the role ... |
|
There are times when he slips out of character -- like when a guest says something unexpected or makes him laugh, or when he misses a line. Other times he reverts to himself on purpose (like when he realized that Robert Wexler might have put his electoral standing in danger by being a good sport and playing along on the show -- and he very clearly stated that Wexler is a good guy).

Never lose your sense of humor. When I can`t laugh anymore, please God just let me die. Even when this list of characters is in office sometimes I just have to sit back and laugh at the brazenness of the assholes! Don`t get me wrong what has happened in these past 6 years has been deadly serious. But, without laughing at them I would lose my mind! Maybe I already have and that is why I laugh!!!!

Laughing is much better than crying; we need our strength.
And, I, too, have to appreciate their "in your face again and again" type of attitude.
Moreover, as a Master's in Psych, and retired social worker, I have to appreciate Darth's complete lack of a conscience sometimes (in a perverse sort of way).

13. Just the opposite. They're one of the few things that make me laugh. |

It's irony and humor. It transcends the subject matter. In fact the twist is important to me. It's like looking at the subject from a different angle.
I've been watching since the first show. I won't miss it. That, and the Tour de France.

have an important function in that a lot of people watch them who wouldn't get much news any other way, mainly because they can't stomach the hard reality of what we're living through. So these shows are doing us all a great service. They are saying the truth of things in a way that people can accept.
Colbert especially has a way of capturing the surrealism of our situation --without a safety net. He's gets out there on thin ice some days. Black humor can help get beyond the horror of it all. I resort to it for that reason. I get news every other way so don't need it for that reason.
But I know what you mean, OBF--more and more lately I'm not in the mood. Some days I want to get the worst of it straight up without any cushioning and then just go stare at a wall. Don't want pundits, comedy, c-span, KO, talking to friends....some days I just have to process it without much help from anybody at all.
The implications of what we are witnessing are indeed very serious. That cannot be denied. I'm skeptical of anyone who says they know what will happen in any arena. These are volatile times--too volatile to live by predictions. To me it's rational to be somewhat down about it all, as long as you don't let it paralyze, because we still have to keep fighting.

28. Don't watch only to look for humor in our tragic situation. |
|
Part of TDS's appeal is that it targets the high & mighty and re-humanizes them. Making the powerful appear to be foolish is an essential service of political satire - made more relevant when the powerful ARE foolish, because foolish leaders tend to cause great harm.

33. don't forget what an important contribution they both made ... |
|
.... when they confronted those in power -- Stewart on CNN, and Colbert at that Correspondents' Dinner. They both stepped up and did some real good, by using humor for social criticism.
Just for that, I wouldn't mind giving them my attention for an hour a night, 4 times a week, for the rest of my life!
